Couldn't find an exact answer to my question in previous threads so plz pardon me if you get struck with De Ja Vuu whilst reading my Post...

i really can't decide between the stock air intake box or a pod filter.. which will greater benefit my stock engine?

keep in mind that i already have a Power FC waiting to be installed and desire to run my stock turbo at 12psi.

im also questioning weather my stock frontmount can cool my engine/turbo at 12psi ..

i'm scared of upgrading to a larger fmic because of throttle responce loss (compression problems)

and curious if i do infact upgrade to a larger fmic should i also upgrade the intake plenum?

plz help thank you all

A pod filter with a shroud will be more beneficial in the long term because of a much better flow, but they work better if they aren't just sucking in hot air from the engine bay. Stock gear can handle 12psi but the addition of a front mount doesn't cause any problems at all because you are increasing the boost and the air will be a lot cooler.....

definatley upgrade to a fmic, the common 600x300x76 will be fine with 2.5" piping, and yes also change to a pod filte ( k&n, apexi are my choices) but make sure u shield them from engine bay temps, there are a few DIY on them on these forums, also as an advantage of changing to a fmic, it wont be HUGE notice but worthwhile- u will have 1 hole under the pod spare since the piping no longer comes up, good idea to run some flexible tubing from there down to ur front bar, get a bit more cold air in...

Could I ask exactly what is the difference between a pod and a panel?

I dont see the difference?

Correct me if I am wrong but I thought as long as either is sucking cool air and both panel and pod are doing their job as an air filter than doesn't that mean that they would be the same as in performance wise?

Anyone want to post up some facts to prove this?

there must be a point where the amount of air the std funnel opening in the std airbox will become a restriction...

i know that even pod filters can be very restrictive...

my example... std turbo at 11psi with 02 Rush pod filter... the filter section came unstuck from teh adapter it was glued onto that connected to the AFM .... went from 11psi to 16psi and hit the R&R ...

std panel filter would have similar surface area to an apexi pod.... but nothing restricting how much air is getting to the pod..

==

so in this particular stockish setup im with Paul and this std panel setup will reduce defectability....

    • It's something we all have to consider as time marches on. Also consider lifted rally MX5 conversion at that point.
    • I should be fine for a few more years, whilst I do have arthritis I also exercise and do mobility training every day to keep as fit and healthy as I can, military life, which is the actual cause of most of my joint issues, has set daily regimes, which I weirdly enjoy I also train alot smarter now, not really focusing on lots strength or puffy muscles, I'm more focused on maintaining what I have for my future older self, I actually train as much mobility now as I do exercising Check out this "simple" drill I have been doing daily prior to training now for a while now, this has worked wonders in my all round mobility
    • I'd say one thing that may make you sell is the same reason the guy with the hard top roof sold his. He got old, and his back was giving him too much grief stopping him getting in and out... Old guy said he was 73! He looked and sounded younger than 73 to me! Or maybe I'm just aligning with old people more...
    • Already looked at a few prior to getting the MX5, really nice car, had all the mod cons, but I wasn't really sold on the new "look" I did miss my 2017 Limited, and I personally prefer the "look" of the older car over the new model, but, when pondering I kept going back looking at MX5's But it was same same for the new ND's, I wasn't sold on the new "look", especially the RF with its weird roof, which only half goes down, like a targa top sort of thing As I stated before, I did look at NC's, but the cars I looked at were PRHT's, but I didn't like their roof line "look" of the PRHT, until I saw the soft top version, (someone on SAU posted a for sale ad for one with a soft top that caught my attention, you can blame them for my choice.....🤣) and.... that old style detachable hard tops were available for them, which keeps the old MX5 more smoother flowing roof line, and the more rounded body style, similar to the NA-NB, to me, the arse end of the ND looks to "modern" Much like how I prefer the NC1 front bar, over the later models How long will I keep this car for is unknown, but currently, there's nothing else out there that "floats my boat" for a small, fun, little "sports car", that I can play with and enjoy looking at and driving But, who knows what the future holds, and going off current new car styling, if I replace it, it will be a older model something something
