Pinging is the engine detonation the fuel to early on the stroke causing the noise!

such as if u use unleaded instead of premium.. when it goes hot the fuel will pre ignite and cause this.

u will hear a noise like a knocking or loud buzzing or how ever u want to describe it.

to resolve it try using a higher octain fuel.. or u can get an addertive which helps (its pritty much octain)

u should beabe to notice it when u r reving high and if the engine makes a weird noise.. ushaly atr high revs ( around 5000 depending)

Ping is pretty much a shortened term for PRE-IGNITION. I kinda sounds like a shaker in a spray can but more dull. As above but a few things to add.

Pinging can be caused by ignition timing too far in advance, hot spots in the cylinder head (usually caused by dodgy porting), lean fuel mixtures or not enough octane rating in the fuel being used. All of these things can cause the fuel/air mix to pre-ignite.

To rectify it you need to find out which one is causing the problem and alter it. Most of the time it is poor fuel quality or ignition timing. You will find that it will ping more so when the engine is producing most of its torque so it will disappear before 6000rpm most of the time.

uneven combustion causing hot spots and percusion on the pistons-can be caused by many factors or combination of these-will result in the end of an engine if it continues over time. Warning - an engine can be knocking and you wont detect it with the human ear so always have it tuned correctly by a pro. So many backyarders chuck on a big turbo and other mods then shoot the boost through the roof and drive around without a good safe tune on it-then Ka Boom...wallet deflates :D

Can also have piston knock, caused by too loose clearances when an engine is rebuilt, and just under load the piston can rattle on power stroke, even when fuel is good quality and timing isnt too far advanced. So having a good tight engine helps keep that form of knock to a minimal level.

Our old rb25, destroyed the ringlands off std pistons, and we had a race meeting the next weekend...out she came quick rebuild with some acl forgies and new bearings and usual crap, went for tuning and it wouldnt stop knocking, take all the timing out, loads of fuel no boost and it would still knock. go figure.

    • Yes, but you will need to rewire all the things that are different. CAS, coils, etc. Yes, but there is no IAT. What? You can use anything you like. It just has to be hooked up so that it will work.     Or are you wanting to just plug and play without having to do any thinking/work?
    • It's been a little over a decade since I bought the S15. As I did on my socials, I'll share some of my favorite pictures from over the years further below. If you haven't realised, pretty much all the pictures in my posts are ones I've taken.  In terms of updates, I don't have pictures, but I acquired a near-perfect pair of fog lights from a friend of mine, so those got swapped in for the pair I already had. As for the JZX110, I just got it back from being fixed. A few weeks back, I was on the highway when I suddenly drove over something with very little time to react. It was probably the size of a soccer ball, but it went under the car and banged into the underside pretty loudly. I pulled over and realized the fluid leaking was fuel, and of course, it was right near my exhaust. This required replacing the fuel tank. If you happen to be in the same predicament, thankfully this car shares a fuel tank with the JZS171, IS200, and IS300, so it wasn't too painful to replace. Enjoy some pictures as mentioned above, including the carnage from the fuel tank and a bonus picture I came across which shows how ridiculously shiny the Bugels are on the 110. So many more pictures I could share of the S15 but this will do for today, enjoy.
