Importing A Car For The First Time

I was told by a mate that Japanese residents of Australia can import one car before they become a permanent resident. And they do not have to pay tax on it or stamp duty or something....sorry but i have no idea what the taxs are called :dry:

He said that they need to have owned it for like a year or something first though....

does anyone else know of this? if so is it really worth while? or is he just blowing hot air?

Before they become a permanent resident? I don't think that is a limitation...

A friend of mine from Perth is a JET teacher in Kobe and he ritualisticly has been exporting one car a year for the last 4 years to AU. He owns them for a year then imports them into AU as Personal imports. They don't need compliancing per se other than the basic roadworthy stuff and it can be any car and any year at all (modified or one already sold in AU).

But, you have to prove that you owned the car for a year over their with insurance, parking space, rego papers etc. Thats more difficult than it sounds as it's all extra paperwork to keep track of. Can't remember exactly which taxes you are exempt from with personal importing, but I'm sure someone else can post about that.

It's definately worthwhile to do if you want say a V35 Skyline 350GT or a recent model like that. Even thought they can be complied in AU, you'd be saving $$$$ by doing it personal import. On the other hand if you wanted a car that can't be complied in AU for whatever reason (eg: Evo 9) it would be worthwile doing aswell. The only downside(?) is that you have to sacrifice a year of your life in Japan... :dry:

thanks, i was thinking i could buy a car when i go over an leave it with the inlaws :dry: or park it under a bush in the country side.....the 12 month thing is a bummer....

hmmm might just let my wife's brother drive it around for a year :D really depends what the whole thing would cost me.

      Ha ha ha, mine loves to spend, all on the dogs (they're our kids, and her spending would likely rival that of some people raising children!) the only benefit is, her spending is tax deductible as she runs a business in the dog industry 😛 The above all means she can spend race car budget quicker than I can. 😛 That and a lot of the things I want are very expensive, and I can be a bit "you want how much for that?!" And at other times overly impulsive. Or I start the w days of research, get to day 1.5 and get really annoyed that no one will advertise actual specifics and it's just marketting BS and I go "well, now I don't want anything to do with that now!" Also I hate paying lots of money for something I can make from $50 in materials. Then I get the shits halfway through making things and wonder why others who just buy parts have more fun... 😛

      Their 240Z with the RB26 would be a real nice thing to have in a garage to come out for an occasional weekend cruise It's such a cool thing in so many ways Sadly, we have a blue 240Z shell that I walk past every day, just sitting outside a shed at work, it has been slowly disintegrating and falling apart into the ground for the last few years, the owner cannot be found, and I am unable to "claim it" I've been told by work and the RMS, the rust in the body is excessive though, and it has had most of the salvageable stuff, like panels, trim and switch gear stripped off it over the last year or two, work keeps threatening to put it in one of our metal scrap bins, I wish they did though, as it makes Mark sad walking past it

      Good tips, I like it! 😂😂 My wife is a LOT more frugal than me so it's only me we need to worry about! A splurge to her is buying 2 pairs of socks in one visit at Kmart!

      Haha, the appropriate response to the question "Is this new?" is "I've had this for a while.". With the unspoken small print that a while may be the time since this morning or five years ago   And to be fair I learned that from the best, i.e. my wife. Because it goes both ways.

      Yeah kids certainly add a whole another dimension to your life.  Life ceases to be about you and more about them for a while!  And I wouldn't have it any other way.  I love watching them play sport and make new friends along the way. Wow, sounds like your mate is a good guy to know!!!  He's got some serious toys in the toy box!  Yes it would be lovely to be able to do stuff to your car without getting all tied up in boring shit like how to pay for it!!  I would describe my spending style as "aggressively spontaneous and logical but regrettable purchasing"....  That will hopefully make no sense at all which would be appropriate given that is how I buy stuff.  I'll decide at the drop of a hat that I'm buying something expensive, research the living shit out of it for 2 days straight then go out and buy it.  Then I'll have instant buyers remorse for 2 days which generally passes by the time it turns up on the front step!  If I'm feeling ballsy sometimes I'll tell my wife.  Other times it just makes its way silently passed the house and out the back to the shed, never to be spoken of again...
