a few updated pics...motor is in car and broken in, tuning is almost complete.

got a few rich spots to sort out but other than that its almost there.

kinda sucks but the brake master died (was leaking externaly) so i just got done replacing that...oh well only was 30$ at the junkyard when i got it.

and a few exterior shots, first time the car has been washed in 6 months.

Very cool rb20 build up. Don't want to sound like a critic here but what about a heat shield over that exhaust manifold. It will get stinking hot!

Keep us posted on the dyno/et results - love to see them.

Cheers

It ceramic coated so heat should be kept to a managable level i would think.

while the manifold is coated it still gets a touch toasty...thinking of fabbing up a sheet metal heatsheild, shouldnt be too hard i would think.

finished the intake pipe today, not terribly pretty but it does indeed work and seems to do its job of keeping the intake charge cooler, however due to the exhaust manifold and wastegate the charge pipe on the hotside and the intake tube catch quite a bit of heat even tho they are pretty far away from the manifold.

im thinking that the external gate isnt dumped far enough out of the engine bay so im proly gonna extend the dump tube a bit...

HOWEVER...from this latest run down the road car seems to pull quite nicely and has good afrs to redline, pulls so hard its actualy kinda scary because of how fast it gets going.

gonna try for vids this weekend...

Hi Carl , yep all looks good .

Phoenix wants an upper cut because that "GT30R" has a version of Garretts T3 exhaust housing on it . Don't know if you wanted it that way but either Garrets or HKS's GT30 housings will work better . HKS's , intended for the GT3037 - esentially the same thing , housings are more compact than Garretts and would place the turbo in a better position with regard to the engine mounting bracket . They were designed to work in kit form with that manifold on RB20/25's .

Cheers A .

right right, whatever turbine housing that got shipped with my 30r isnt the gt spec bit, it fits but its certinaly not the gt one as the gt one has 3" outlet while mine only has a 2.5"...this may be contribuiting to some of the weird spool charcteristics that im getting from this turbo.

it kind of irritates me that this happened but it was too late before i noticed.

manifold clearance is fine really, more space than i had originaly expected while more would be nice this will for now.

center section is indeed a 30r center section as is the compressor cover, but like you pointed out the exhaust housing is a touch strange, hopefuly anyone who goes after a 30r in the future will grab the right one.

Yes the flange on the exit side of the HKS is slightly more compact than the Garrett one but then compact is good in most engine bays . Being in the US means that you could probably track down a suitable HKS housing from one of the HKS dealers - can buy separate . The T3 housing will have issues with the GT30 turbine because it was designed many years ago to suit low tip height T3 turbines . The turbine and housing type really are a matching set designed to work with each other .

Very nice to see carl, good work will be intresting to see how it goes when finished .You made 6rwkw more than me with my old car, had stock bottom end too (60,000k's on it ) b4 I bent it . Doing the same thing to the new car but some things will change I like some of your work and gives me good ideas for mine,Mods are nearly the same but mine's still a couple months of only just started to rebuild the car

Mods Are

Airas forged pistons + 40thou

balanced and blue printed bottom end

arp bottom and head stud bolts

tomei rod bolts

tomei metal head gasket

tomei oil restrictors ( I agree with you 2 is better than one no chance's )

Resized rods shot peened and linished

N1 oil pump

N1 water pump

Crank collar

Nismo bearings

Top end

Ported and polished head

Hks cams

Hks cam gears

gtr valve springs

1 mm oversized valves

Hks exhaust manifold ( same as your's )

Hks external waste gate (again same as yours)

Garrett Gt3040R turbo

Sard 550cc injectors

Sard fuel pressure regulator

Havn't decided on a plenum yet probably go with the plazma man 1

Engine manegment is taken care of by haltec E11 v2

What engine manegment are you using and what size injectors

anxiously waiting for your results

Cheers Peter

I can't believe how much space you have in the s14 engine bay

It's a bit tighter in the r32 engine bay :O I had to move the power steering reservoir to fit the compressor outlet pipe.

ledgend01 - thanks, yours sounds to be pretty evil when done too. im currently running an rb25det power fc and 720cc injectors, i found using 550cc injectors on the old setup it was going over the 80% duty cycle (not by much mind you...) but it was enough to make me think of upgrading.

when one of my supra buddies upgraded to 1kcc injectors i sold mine for 200$ and picked up his for 200$ so it was a straight trade really...

hopefuly this weekend we will get some video.

tune is all hammered out 13:1 from 3.5-4.2k(spool up,no more than 10psi) then from 4.2-5k it goes to 12:1 then from 5-8.5k its a solid 11.5:1 ratio.

she seems to go quitenicely and on base boost scared me a few times as 1st and 2nd gears have questionable traction...

and yes, the s14 engine bay is HUGE compared to the skyline or the s13 engine bay (which the motor was in at one point).

having a few problems with spark being blown out, so limited to 16psi right now...new plugs and regap to .8mm should fix the problem.

for your enjoyment...

    • GTSBoy on your suggestion on another thread I had a look at those injectors and ended up getting them because of the quality.  Got the expensive ones.
    • Hey guys been looking everywhere to try and find the correct gtr hood latch support part number but only found the first half and when I search with that number it sends me to an r34. The first part I found was 62515. If anyone could help me with the rest then I’d really appreciate it. Or if there’s some alternative hood latch support that would work even better cause I can’t find any for sale. (Searched on upgarage, partsouq, buyee, rhdjapan)
    • If you've only done the upper control arms on the rear, AND you have changed their length (by more than about 1mm) to set the camber you want, then you will definitely need/want to install traction arms also. Adjusting the camber arms on their own WILL introduce bump steer and make the car unpleasant to drive. Most owners have no idea that their car could behave infinitely better than what they put up with. I'm not entirely sure what the Stageas need, but I am thinking that unless you have massive front spring rates and pretty soft rear springs, you have waaaay too much rear bar. Oversteer city, in my estimation. Combined with possible excessive bump steer from maladjusted arms, that could be a recipe for nastiness. ATR43SS2 is not a highflow. It is an outright replacement turbo. It's a little bit bigger than the largest highflow profile that Tao does. Probably a solid 300rwkW turbo where the bigger highflows will be about 30-40rwkW less. Nevertheless, we're only talking about ~300 rwkW, which is well within the abilities of the stock ECu to run with a Nistune on board. I would do so without hesitation - and I will be doing so when I get my finger out and actually get the injectors and AFM installed. But, if you would prefer to drop a whole lot more money on the ECU side, then I suspect you're looking at Haltech. The Haltech fanbois here will all spout on about all the available engine protection you can have, that you can't have with the Nistune option. And they're right. But it doesn't really come for free either. You will spend more money on extra sensors and the like, plus the work to install them. If the engine was built and therefore represented a big investment to protect, then I'd say definitely do it. If you view the current (and forever into the future) shortage of replacement engines as something to prompt similar protection, then also, do it. If you see a destroyed RB25 as an opportunity to put in a Mercedes or other V12 (like I kinda do)... then your perception of the risk/reward might differ. These are good injectors. You can also get a "better" set of the same with more flow matching, for more $$. 1000cc is where you will want to be. You will need an R35 AFM and adapter tube if you want to stay with Nistuned stock ECU. Otherwise, if going Haltech, you can ignore. As for intercooler. Just about anything will do. You're only talking about ~300rwkW. Just put a big core in there. Be aware that return flows do add significant pressure drop and will cost power and will make the turbo work harder to achieve the same goals. If you can manage a proper crossflow, do it. I'm keeping my very good return flow because I'm only expecting to be in the ~250rwkW range, and will live with whatever outcome I get.
    • I have a heap that i have collected if you want some authentic ones still. Pm me if your interested!
