Phillip Island 6 Hour Relay

I have been looking and having a hard think about this event. The more i think about it the more fun i think it will be.

The emphasis is on circulating at a comfortable nominated lap time, not balls to the wall flat full speed laps.

The basic rules are a team of hopefully 6 drivers and 6 cars enter as a team. Each driver and car combo can do a max 15 minute stints, and a max of 2 hours.

The real challenge is to be able to do 10-15 laps and not kill your tyres, cook your water temps etc. The challenge is to drive to the speed the car and driver can consistantly do...which is different to the usual sprint . Im really lookign forward to the different type of challenge. At Sprints you go as hard as you can for 2-3 laps before your brakes, tyres and temps have skyrocketed. This will be much kinder on the car with more emphasis on drivers :sorcerer:

The cool thing is we need a team manager etc, im real excited about this. And entry fee is by team, so $1400.00 for a team of 6 guys is great value. You get to do the Practice/Qualifying on Saturday then the 6hr relay on Sunday.

The downer for some ppl is that their is a minimum lap time stipulated by the organisers. No car is allowed to go quicker then a 1:55. But honestly i dont think any of us have a car capable of doing 15 sub 1:55 laps without cooking its engine oil, coolant, diff etc etc.

So cant see this as being a reason not to enter. Worst case drive at a good head of speed and come the run down the straight back off to make sure that the car can complete the 15 laps without overheating or breaking out.

I have decided that i will be entering. I know a few ppl that will be running their HRA cars, but i would enjoy the event more if we could get an SAU-Vic team together. This is an event where the more std the car is, the better of you will probably be. This is also an event that would be cool to win, as there is no reason why our team couldnt win...and lets face it, Motorsport trophoies make you more virile.

Im up for anything, as im desperately down on track time in 2006. Ill have a closer look at the Alfa one, but i would prefer PI as its the sort of track i think i would enjoy a little more as if i limited revs i think it would be easier on the car then Winton as you wouldnt be on-off the throttle the whole lap.

As for cars not being up to it? If HRA guys are entering $1500 Volvos? The format is so ppl dont have to have heavily modded cars. You nominate a time and you drive to it. Some ppl may be able to do a sub 1:55 lap, but there is NO WAY they can do it for 10-15 laps without killing their car. Me im thinking 2:02s are about the time i think i will nominate, but could be way out. 2:02 is about 10sec off a lap time i think i can do flat

And anyways - PIARC Saturdays are 20min sessions and we were still doing 1.51's all session back then without cooking cars so driving around at pedestrian speed dodging all the grandpa's driving tractors (because it's only old historic wrecks that do these events) sounds like a terrible way to spend a perfectly good drinking weekend.

Find someone with an M3, we did about 20 laps straight in that thing at the driver training day, it didn't hiccup at all. Maybe i can convince aaron to do it in his M5

Sounds like it would be a load of fun... The M5 should be able to withstand that... I've seen videos of the M5 tracking around phillip island for a whole day in the hands of journalists without cooking anything (other than tyres of course)

I am keen, as for me it presents a different drving challenge...and i just want to do more laps around PI.

...and i will add, im doign this for 100% FUN. Im not fussed if we go well or bad, its abotu walkign away with a big smile after having done plenty of laps of a great circuit. If we happen to do well and scantily clad girls want my seed post event then i will take that as a bonus

Based on my car, im guessing its going to be two tanks of gas and half a set of tyres and half a set of pads....but hope with this sort of event i can really learn the track.. Plan is to see what lap times i can do short shifting a 6,2000rpm so that engine temps stay well under control.

If ppl are worried about tyres let me know the sizes you are after and i can probably hook you up with some cheap used semi slicks that will see you out the event.

Im certainly thinking about it... I just have to do the sums for the tyres, pads, discs etc because as you can imagine ... nothing BMW is cheap and especially from BMW-M.

The rear dunlop 8080E's that I have (275/35/18) are already at about 1/2... damm that right foot , so I'm currently looking around for a set of tyres that I could use, and getting prices on replacement pads and discs

We have a littleun due on the 31st of October so I dont want to spread the $$ too thin because as I am rapidly finding out, NOTHING baby related is cheap *sigh*

Great news...understand completely. Your car would be very expensive in the brake pad, rotor, tyres and fuel dept.

Thanks for that guys... it is certainly going to be a busy / fascinating time. I am still keen on the relay however, I have put in an email to a mate @ Doncaster BMW to try and get prices on pads and discs.

In the USA the pads they use are Axxis Ultimates which are made by Bendix here in OZ, so I am guessing that they are just the Bendix Ultimates that we can buy. should not be too expensive.

The killer will be the discs.. .as I dont think I can readily get (in the time frame required) replacement aftermarket discs should I need them. Doncaster can get them from Germany VOR (Vehicle Off Road) in about a week but then they hit you with the price.... I would not be suprised if they are about $900 each for the fronts.... but then again they are 345x32mm discs.
