Hi,

finally put in the HID kit into my R34, 8500k, thought was going to be stupidly blue but was pleasantly surprised, was actually ok.

But the light is still nothing special though, quite disappointed actually, and i think my headlights are pointing too far down. I've got the switch in the car that tilts the lights up and down, it does work, and i've got it as high as it will go but the light is still very low (angle).

Is there are a screw or something to manually life the anlge of light on 34 headlights?

cheers,

daniel

EDIT: sorry for the double thread, but going away for the weekend, country way and want to see if i can sort out the light issues before then.

As i hve always said, expect shit light output. expect to glare people and expect to be defected. expect to cause an accident and ahve your insurance voided.

Read my views on aftermarket hid kits.

Pointing it up will give you a bit more distance, but less light in each of the areas.

^ they are OEM Xenon headlight assembly's... i assumed that if i put Xenon globes back in assemblys that were DESIGNED for them, it would be ok...

i can't see how putting in a pair of Nissan Xenon globes would be any different. This is not a dodgy HID kit going into a set of headlights not designed for them.

Wrong.

The bulbs used in these aftermarket kits sometimes have a different structure. that is, they are different length, focal point is in different place.

Secondly, because it's been converted to h1, the focal point is moved. Lighting optics are very fine. even 1-2 mm difference makes a world of difference. it is the difference between good and bad.

thirdly and most importantly, your car has a reflector housing. It hsould be using a d2r bulb. The ricer hid kits use d2s bulbs as a base - which means they don't have that shield ring painted onto it.

Afterall, I am only involved in a related area as my job..... (no, i'm not some mechanic at a compliance shop)

went to nissan,

1) they don't sell nor can get in OEM Nissan Xenon globes :) -

2) they showed me two adjustment screws/cogs - 1 left/right, 1 for up/down (i'm not convinced my up/down works)

3) they said putting in Nissan globes wouldn't make a difference to light cutoff, they said if you've got Xenon globes in there, you've got Xenon globes in there.

i'm not convinced they knew much anyway... so i'm more inclined to believe 97r33gtst-typeM

is this what ppl's R34 Xenon headlights look like on the inside?

headlight1_b.jpg

what is the cut-off like for OEM Xenon's anyway? is it as good as say the Honda Euro lights?

It's not what it looks like there that matters. of course your reflector and that little cone shield will still be the same. Have a look at that black thing around the bulb - That is the bit which they change.

Most likely, this, when coupled wiht the h1 aftermarket kit has the bulb in a different position relative to the reflector, which is causing the shit light.

The only way to tell if this is the case, is to place your headlight with this bulb in it next to someone else's factory set up and check the position of the bulb. remember - 1-2mm makes a world of difference. Try it. face it at the wall and slide the bulb out slowly and watch the light change.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but was your car 'converted' such that it takes a h1 halogen bulb? If so, then everything I said above is correct.

Nissan does sell the factory xenon globes. the guy you saw doesn't know shit. He wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a penis pump and a headlight.

doesn't matter if they sell them anyways. Your housing can't take the d2r bulb anymore, because the fixing mechanism has been changed (the d2s/d2r/d2c bulbs have a large base - won't fit in the h1 hole).

Please understand that i'm not trying to trick you or anything. What benefit do I have to gain? I don't hate xenons or anyhting.

I'm just going by my experience.

Just to let you know, i've tried an aftermarket hid kit in a butchered 34 housing. The cutoff was shit. Hotspots everywhere.

When shone at the wall next to an oem light, my gosh....

I have contributed to many threads on lighting with another forum member called MANWHOR3. Ask 'Sir-D' or 'Xixor' if we know anyhting about lighting.

PS Guys:

I'd highly suggest a lighting subsection to be created in this forum.

I can supply images of the light output of stock, v aftermarket gay ricer kits in all sorts of housing (reflector, projecto etc) as well as provide extensive explanations on issues such as these to save you guys money.

I'm guessing that you jumped onto the bandwagon and bought those $200 hid kits from china?

Kaixen kit, made in Korea.

was led to believe that this kit was not cheapo, it was of high quality.

Well there you go, i couldn't get the globe to sit right, when i clamped it into place, it would always shift the globe so it pointed up a bit (you can see from the pic) I wondered if this would matter...

I rang a place in sydney that does the conversions for compliance, and there are about 3 ways of doing it. my way, get 4dr halogen assembly's or bend the reflectors, something like that..

so i was wondering if mine "assembly" had been altered, bent/cut, etc...

yes, was converted. But i think it was done in the least "destructive" way..

fixing mechanism... that's the one... can't get the globe to sit nice when i clamp it in.

i've asked OEM R34 owners and they said the lightout output is nothing special anyway, still quite low and poor throw, so i don't even know if the OEM lights have a nice cut-off like the honda euro ones...

i might try fiddling with the base of the globe, see if i can find some position that will help with the light.

Of course yours has been butchered. you said so yourself. it was 'converted'.

Kaixen, or whatever other kits are shit.

Honestly, your best bet would be to source standard hid.

I'm actually going to stop replying now, because you seem to have your mind set on continuing with this. your choice.

As I said before, I've been there, done that on r34s and many other types of cars.

What makes your car special and able to defy the laws of physics?

least destructive? what does that have to do with anything?

They altered the base. Plain and simple. That, coupled with your h1 hid kit most likely places the bulb at a different location.

Up above, I said that even a few mm makes the difference. It is not the fact that you can't fix it in properly, it is just the fact that it is in the wrong place.

Like I said, find osmeone with an oem hid setup and compare the lighting. I have done a test before. I have pictures too.

i don't have my mind set on anything, i'm taking all you've said on board and agree TOTALLY that the light is shit, that it won't ever be as good as OEM and i need an OEM kit. I'm not disputing you there at all.

i'm just trying to make the best of a bad situation, ie, fiddle with the globe, see if i can get it a little sharper. Change the headlight angle, so i can see, just litting things whilst i either change back to halogen or source an OEM kit.

I've talked to a few OEM owners, so i'll see if i can compare side by side one. If you had any pictures you could post up, that would be most appreciated.

And if people are wondering about R34 adjustments, the screw on the far side of each assembly (nearest the front guards) controls Low-Beam left/right, the white cogs here..

cog.jpg

controls the HI-beam up/down - have yet to find the Low-beam up/down... i don't eve know if there is a manual adjustment for it. I'm sure there must be somewhere.

    • Back again. I returned to Japan in Jul/Aug to spend time with the car on my birthday and remind myself what all the sacrifice and compromise is for. It happened to line up with the monthly morning meet in Okutama, which I have been wanting to go to for a long time. It's a unique event at a unique spot with really rare, interesting, and quirky cars. It's where all the oldheads and OGs gather. The nighttime scene at DKF certainly has its place and should be experienced if you're into cars, but there's too much bad attention and negativity around it now. IMO the better time is Sunday morning at DKF or Okutama; it's more chill and relaxed. I'm glad I was finally able to go, but not sure it's worth the drive from all the way from Nagoya immediately the day before, unless I was already staying in Tokyo for the days right before the meet, because you have to wake up quite early to make it in time. Funnily enough though I didn't drive the car all that much this trip because it was just too damn hot. While there were zero issues and running temps were nominal and the A/C was strong, RBs already run crazy hot as it is. Sure, it took it all like a champ but something about driving these cars in the ridiculous heat/humidity bothers me and makes me feel like I'm asking too much of it. I'm just me being weird and treating the car like a living thing with feelings; I'm mechanically sympathetic to a fault. Instead I was mainly driving something else around - a KX4(silver) 2001 X-Trail GT, that I acquired in May. There's a few different flavors to choose from with Xs, but visually it's the Nissan version of the Honda CR-V. Mechanically it's a whole different story as this, being the top-trim GT, has an SR20VET mated to a four-speed auto and full-time AWD! It was a very affordable buy in exceptional condition inside and out, with very low mileage...only 48k kms. Most likely it was owned by an older person who kept it garaged and well-maintained, so I'm really happy with how it all worked out. It literally needs zero attention at the moment, albeit except for some minor visual touch-ups. I wanted something quirky, interesting, and practical and for sure it handily delivers on all three of those aspects. I was immediately able to utilize the cargo and passenger capacity to its full extent. It's a lot of fun to drive and is quite punchy through 1st and 2nd. It's very unassuming -in the twisty bits it's a lot more composed than one would think at a glance- and it'll be even better once I get better tires on it(yes, it's an SUV but still a little boat-y for my liking). So...now I have two golden-era Nissans in silver. One sports car and one that does everything else; the perfect two-car solution I think👍 The rest of the trip...I was able to turn my stressed brain off and enjoy it, although I didn't quite get to do as much as I thought. I did some interesting things, met some interesting people, and happened into some interesting situations however, that's all for another post though only if people really want to know. Project-wise, I went back to Mine's again to discuss more plans and am hoping to wrap that up real soon; keep watching this space if that interests you. Additionally, while working in the tormenting sweatbox that is the warehouse, I was able to organize most of the myriad of parts that my friend is storing for me along with the cars, and the 34 has a nice little spot carved out for it: And since it can get so stupid hot in there, that made it all the more easy -after I was standing there looking at the car and said 'f**k it'- to finally remove all the damn gauges that have mostly been an eyesore all this time. Huzzah. The heat basically makes the adhesive backing on the gauge mounts more pliable to work with, so it was far less stressful getting this done. I didn't fully clean it up or chase the wiring though; that will happen once I have the car in closer possession. Another major reason to remove all that stuff is to give people less reasons to get in my car and steal s**t while it's being exported/imported when/if the time comes, which leads us to my next point... ...and that is even though it's time in Japan is technically almost up since it's a November car and the X would be coming in March, I'm still not entirely sure where my life and career is headed; I don't really know what the future looks like and where I'm going to end up. I feel there's a great deal of uncertainty with me and as a result of that, it feels like I'm at a crossroads moreso now than any point in my life thus far and there are some choices I need to make. Yes, I've had some years to consider things and prepare myself, however too much has happened in that time to maintain confidence and everything feels so up in the air; tenuous one might say. Simply put, there's just too much nonsense going on right now from multiple vectors. Admittedly, I'm struggling to stay in the game and keep my eyes on the prize. So much so in fact, that very recently I came the closest I ever have before to calling it quits outright; selling everything and moving on and not looking back. The astute among you will pick up on key subtext within this paragraph. In the meantime I've still managed to slowly acquire some final bits for the car, but it feels nice knowing there's not much left to get and I'm almost across that finish line; I have almost everything I'll ever want for my interpretation and expression on what it is I think an R34 should be. 'til later.
    • Thanks for that, hadn’t used my brain enough to think about that.
    • Also playing with fire if they start to flow more air down low than what the stock twins can. It's not even up top you need to worry, it can be at 3000rpm and part throttle and it's getting way more flow than it should.
    • Any G40/1000 or G40/1250 results out there?
    • You still want a proper tune on the stock ECU though. Stock tune + stock ECU with GT-SS/-9s is probably playing with fire if you're running more than stock airflow/power.
