hi all,

my battery keep on dieing, i drove the car everyweekend and only on the weekend. but lately i have to push start the car to get it going, would it be the alternater? wild driving it read 14.2v but wheni turn the car off it instantly gone to 12.7v i tried changing the baterry it didnt help. how much can i get a new alternater for including fitting, also would a maxima ultinator be ok? thanks for ur help.

each battery has an amp hours rating.. so it can supply say 60amp hours

Amp Hours

The Amp Hour rating tells you how much amperage is available when discharged evenly over a 20 hour period. The amp hour rating is cumulative, so in order to know how many constant amps the battery will output for 20 hours, you have to divide the amp hour rating by 20. Example: If a battery has an amp hour rating of 75, dividing by 20 = 3.75. Such a battery can carry a 3.75 amp load for 20 hours before dropping to 10.5 volts. (10.5 volts is the fully discharged level, at which point the battery needs to be recharged.) A battery with an amp hour rating of 55 will carry a 2.75 amp load for 20 hours before dropping to 10.5 volts.

i have the same issue with my car as its a weekender too.

so you dont think its the alternator? how will i know if the afternator is no longer working correctly?

the charge the battery recieves should always be around 14.5v from the alternator.. if its above or well below that it would need to be looked at . ie make sure its belt is not slipping etc

try what Blind_elk said .. the charge value should remain the same from idle to all revs.. shouldn't change dramatically

i forgot to mention that i drove the car on sunday for a good hour and today i need to push start. this is the second bettery, both were 1 year old.

i've had this happen in a few of my daily drivers. can drive around at night, then next morning they are dead. only happens in winter. its the cold weather that kills batteries. you may've bought the battery 12 months ago, but it may've been sitting on the shelf for 6 months before that. get a new battery and it should be all good. get a century, since they have a warranty.

    • But I think you missed mine.. there is also nothing about the 98 spec that supports your claim..  according to the fuel standards, it can be identical to 95, just very slightly higher octane number. But the ulp vs pulp fuel regulations go show 95 (or 98), is not just 91 with some additives. any claim of ‘refined by the better refineries’ or ‘higher quality fuel’ is just hearsay.  I have never seen anything to back up such claims other than ‘my mate used to work for a fuel station’, or ‘drove a fuel delivery truck’, or ‘my mechanic says’.. the actual energy densities do slightly vary between the 3 grades of fuel, but the difference is very minor. That said, I am very happy to be proven wrong if anyone has some hard evidence..

    • You're making my point for me. 95 is not "premium". It is a "slightly higher octane" version of the basic 91 product. The premium product that they want people to buy (for all the venal corporate reasons of making more profit, and all the possibly specious reasons of it being a "better" fuel with nicer additive packages) is the 98 octane stuff. 95 is the classic middle child. No-one wants it. No-one cares about it. It is just there, occupying a space in the product hierarchy.
    • 98 and 95 have to meet the same national fuel standards beside the actual RON.  91 has lower standards (which are quite poor really), so 95 is certainly not 91 with some octane booster. It would be an easier argument to claim 98 is just 95 with some octane boosters. Also RON doesn't specify 'quality' in any sense, only the octane number.  Anything different retailers decide or not decide to add to their 95 or 98 is arbitrary and not defined by the RON figure.
