This was in the paper the other day... Hydrogen baby! Not sure if it really works and if it would rust your motor out or something crazy like that? If it was really that good an oil company would have brought them out and shut it down I guess...

Here’s a quick run down on why LPG is a bad idea;

1. You need 1.3 litres of LPG to go as far as 1 litre of 98 ron.

2. The LPG tank (being a pressure vessel) has thicker walls, hence for the same outside dimensions it will hold 20% less.

3. Add 1 & 2 together and it means 50% less distance between refills compared to he same dimensioned petrol tank.

4. LPG is now 99 ron, the 110 ron dropped to get the price down

5. There isn’t an LPG system designed for RB’s, so you would need one to be made up “special”. Think lots of $’s.

6. They will use a single point gas mixer (not 6 injectors, not sequential), it will simply be connected to the throttle, more throttle opening = more gas squirted in. No fuel mapping as such.

7. Your standard ECU will run the ignition etc

8. Driveability, cold start and run, hot run etc will all suffer as a result of the poor (in comparison) fuel metering.

9. If you live in a cold area you won’t be able to drive your car until it warms up. If you don’t warm it up, drive off and accidentally use too much throttle you may well get a gas explosion in the inlet system. Not large enough to hurt you but large enough to require a top end rebuild.

And a few others I have forgotten.

:/ cheers :/

Yeap, SarKastic Strikes again ;)

All well put points but! Only upside to lpg is the price AT THE MOMENT....... which we all know will rise eventually.....

Hydrogen is doable, but where are you going to fill up? The oil companies would have to spend BILLIONS to roll out the infrastructure worldwide, and that is the only way it would happen, as Australia has a very small population compared to China, USA, europe, etc etc.

BMW Has a motor that runs dual petrol and hydrogen, but again, where to fill up? Also have you considered the cost of making Hydrogen.... You would be surprised.

This is a very interesting site:

And for those who think an electric car cant look sporty or feel sporty:

http://www.teslamotors.com/index.php?js_enabled=1

But again, look at the price of them...... horrific! And are they being mass produced, no.

All in all, we're boned!

oil companies are not goin gto invest into new tech cos they need to protect their current investments such as rigs and refineries. Ubnless the govt gives them tax encentives in their new investments. if not they are just going to do with the old ways.

For an example diesel engine wasnt developed to run on diesel. But when the inventor died the oil companises modified the engine to run on the current deisel. Diesel engine when it wwas first developed it was to run on peanut oil!! So the oil companies have the fiesel as by products which the couldnt sell and they used the diesel engine to run on the current diesel fuel.

All in all look at the long term costs. The only time Lpg is worth it when you run 100k/yr then its wirth it if not dont bother. Like i said before LPG has actually risen 300%+ compares to what it was 7 years ago.

    • Right, its been a while for updating this car, but I made some small but important progress today. In the end I bought an Ecutek dongle from the Australian distributor Tunehouse (for local hardware support) but have gone with a remote tune from Racebox in the US (because they have done millions of these, and I could not find any tuner where I could access the tune anyway as they are all password locked). The App is reasonably easy to work with, but the PC software reminds me of Haltech's ECU Manager that you need to use with the Plat Pro ECUs, it is a nightmare.  Anyway, I sent the details over, got back a tune file and a request for data logs. I finally got a chance to access a private test track today as they want redline logs in 3rd and 4th, and have sent them back for the first round of reviews. The main difference in the tune is going from 1.0 (stock) to 1.3 bar (19psi), although I'm sure is a lot of other stuff in the background. Keeping in mind this is a dead stock car with 125,000klm, this is what the App's performance test claimed: Before After Interesting to note that both 400m tests had the same terminal speed (158klm/h) but different ETs. And no, the speed limiter seems to be higher than that at 186kl/h. Summary of the key logged parameters for the 3rd and 4th gear runs were: Those little turbos were certainly whizzing at 200,000rpm+.  Also I'm really not that excited about oil pressure 55psi at redline so I think I'll go thicker than 5w30 (nissan recommend 0w20....) and see if that improves it. Other than that (and the big boost spike....) everything looks good as a start to me.
    • Just one more post to show the final result and the original "janky" solution for a laugh. Everything feels really tight and no wobbling at all, very pleased 🙂

    • The hot exhaust light will come on not from just the cat being blocked, but it's just a temp sensor, and it's designed to warn you to not do things like park in long grass.   If you've been pushing the motor a bit, it can cause the light to come on.   Second if the cat is rattling, I'd suspect it's not blocked, but instead falling apart inside.   The easiest "fix" until you can get a cat put back in, is to unbolt your one, bash the rest of the insides out, and then bolt it back in.   For a daily driver/street car, I am in agreeance of put a cat in the car. If it were race car I wouldn't care if it were removed.
