Hey all, I am buying a SII R33 GTS-T 5-spd manual in November this year and I have a question for you. I have driven a mates R30 that had an RB20DET (i think thats the write code/term) in it with a massive front mount intercooler and a pod filter. This thing sounds F*%KIN NUTZ!

At low revs you can't hear anything, if your in neutral and you rev it you dont hear anything out of the ordinary, just a engine reving, but when you begin to move as the revs get higher it sounds like a jet taking off. sounds dumb i know but its the best way for me to explain it. It's like air is being sucked into it. when you release the accelerator it makes a whoosh kinda like a blow off valve but better. BOV's have always sounded a little tacky to me. This car dosnt have an aftermarket bov/wastegate on it. My friend recons its the pod filter that gives it the induction/air suckin sound. But im a lil hesitant towards that because i know plenty of n/a tuned cars with pod filters on them and they don't sound like this.

Can anyone suggest what i do to my stock R33 to get it to sound like this? cheers.

A pod filter will give you the induction noise.

Big difference between N/A with a Pod and Forced Induction with a Pod.

If you go the pod, try to get a heatshield made up. You will still have the induction noise but its not a defect and it also helps keep the air cooler by not sucking in the hot air from the engine.

thanks for the reply mate,

1. does placement of the pod matter? his was right near the road

2. any links on making up a heatshield?

3. will i get a release/whoosh sound when i take my foot off the accelerator?

Even if the filter is in the standard position it will still make that sound.

Have a search on here to find more info about the heatshields. :D

EDIT: And yes you will get a sound when releasing.

im getting mine installed tommorrow - i will post pics when its done

thanks man that would be awesome.

so if i install a front mount intercooler it wont make any sounds? just add performance right?

p.s. im so confused. read this. http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/in...=126568&hl=

is it just me or does everyone have something different to say?

Not sure why you're so concerned about the induction noise, most people install a pod for the performance gain :D

In any case, the answer is yes, a pod will give you the sucking sound and a kindof woosh sound when lifting off the accelerator. If you want even more induction noise, fit a larger turbo as well :D

i just love the unique sound the car has. i hate seeing r33's with massive exhausts that sound like try hard v8's. i'd rather keep the exhaust stock, or change it for performance only and ensure it isnt too loud. i'd rather people say 'hey that skyline sounded mad!' not 'is that a hsv? ah no its a skyline trying to sound like it has a v8'.

if you catch my drift. anyways can you or anyone recomend a good pod filter?

Got my pod installed - sounds good - the power gain is not as much as the exhaust though. Will post pics tommorrow :)

As for blu3chips question - with batmbls front dump and cat - mine has this sorta high pitched sound - almost like u can hear the air flow sorta. Sounds cool in my opinion. But the main thing i noticed is the responsiveness - the car is soo much better off - and a bit better on the fuel too for some reason :)

yep a good hks pod filter will make a sweet sucking sound/fighter jet sound on a standard gtst when it comes on boost - when your on boost and you ease off the gas it makes a lush pphhhtttssshhhhh sound which you can control depending on how quick you take your foot off the gas. My friends gtst is running at 1.4bar of boost on a hybrid and his sounds even beefier - mine is more like a high pitched hissing... his is like a really bassed up hiss as its just pulling so much more air in.

pod filters dont give a massive performance gain but they certainly sound mint :)

hey Rolls:

so blocking off the standard Bov will create turbo chatter is that right? Is there a link on here to a more in depth talk about it?

Induction noise is annoying - wayyy too boy-ricer for my liking.

Got a K&N pod filter in Maxx's CAI box with clear lid. Ive filled up the box with heat resistant foam to try to deaden some of the induction sound. Quieter and liveable at this stage, but when on boost damn it's still loud.

Meh

bigger turbo...

You would tinks so...but it really depends, I was running the stock turbo with an Apexi filter..the induction noise was loud as, I changed to a larger turbo with stainless induction piping still using the same filter and the noise is now close to a stock airboxed skyline (Maybe 10% louder) So I imagine it depends on the design of the turbo! A few of my mates have experienced this also so it leads me to beleive if you want loud induction the stock turbo is best!

I agree...the induction noise of my car before the upgrades was insanely loud and actually a little embaressing as with the stock turbo even giving it a little bit of throttle around town to make a lane change or what ever would cause it to make that stupid sound ><
