Has anyone out there tried / used the Toyo R888 semi comps? And if so how do they stack up against the more commonly used semi's?

I've used:

Bridgestone RE55's - which I find to be the best sprint and motokhana semi comp in that they have great dry grip and come up to temp quickly. My only complaint is that they do tend to go off quite quickly so are struggling by the 3rd flying lap around places like PI.

Dunlop DZ02's - seemed to have the same grip as the RE55's but took a lot longer to get upto to temp. However they didn't seem to drop off in performance like the Bridgestones. But consequently not as good for the short / quick stuff as the Bridgestones.

Adavan A048's - seemed less grippy than both the RE55's and DZ02's and only got worse (harder) with each heat cycle. Apparently they are awesome in the wet and would probably be a great Targa tyre but my experience would say they are not the best semi for sprints or motokhana/autocross events.

But I'd really like some feedback on the Toyo's if anyone has used them.

I've used two sets now 225/50/16 and a 255/45/17 on two different cars (Z32 and a R33 4 Door).

Great tyre that loves heat cycling; great for short-medium work RE55S's IMO are better for track work; The R888's come up to temp very quick but tend to overheat a little bit with continuous hard track work - least in my experience.

Great wear on them, and even when nearly a slick still perform extremely well.

I originally chose to try the R888's becuase they are a directional rather than an asymetric tyre (the RE55S). Barbagallo Raceway in WA tends to wear the front left alot harder than the others.

Cool - so Franz for something like Classic Perth they'd be a good tyre?

I was looking at the for Dutton and even the circuit stuff at that event is only 2 laps (with only a half lap warm up) so something that comes up to temp fast is perfect.

Just to clear something up the RE55 is BOTH a directional tyre & a handed tyre. So a right hand side RE55 can only go on the RHS & same for the LHS.

Never tried it. I only ever contemplated rotating them front & rear as the fronts tend to get the outside edges bashed off them (cornering) & the rears the inner edges (from wheelspin). They all pretty much wear at the same rate.

Easiest thing is to find an anti clockwise circuit to balance the things out.

Speaking of which, you entering any SES events at all Franz?

I ran wet tyres both years at Dutton....worked a treat, just make sure you change em for road tyres before the longer drives like wakefield to syd in NSW. There was nothing in the regs to stop that in the past, ot sure if there is now....for that matter people like simmo were also running race fuels

re55 in wet compound was great, the falkens I ran the year after were also good but got drifted to death on day 2 :P

the best thing about wets is they get up to temp super quick and they are soft as, when you think about it you do bugger all competitive klm so they can last OK.

...in the dry maybe. But i have been told that in the dry dont stress, you can rotate them?

yep we used to do this all the time when race tyres wore unevenly, same performance in the dry, even in one weekend say at Oran Park, just swap front left for right and off we go again :P

The Toyo R888's come in three different ratings.

1G, 2G and 3G

Bascially,

1G is a racing tyre where you are doing lots of laps

2G is a supersprint tyre which comes on relative quickly but can go off a little (and by a little i mean a very little) after a fair few laps

3G is a hill climb tyre and will come on after you get to second gear..... they are super soft tyre and not recomended for any kind of circuit work.

I am curently using the R888's and have found them to be an excelent tyre, we are going to do a back to back comparo on the same car on Friday with some RE55's so will let you know what the differences are.
