i have a totally stock r33 and i thought id try this. it did bugger all to improve performance. on a cold wet night in 3rd gear loaded up from 60k to 150kph the factory boost guage went to halfway between 0 and 7 and stayed there right until redline. the next day i put the hose with the restrictor back on and did the same thing on the same road (still a cold wet night). the boost guage showed the same thing until 5000rpm when it crept up a bit furtherpast half way and really started to thrust.

this thread is probably dead and buried but id thought i might tell of my experience.

just boost on and love it!!!

If the boost is at 1bar or more, your turbo WILL fail eventually. This may take 2 months, this may take 2 years, but it will fail. Its due to the extra shaft speed (not to be confused with boost) causing the CERAMIC turbine wheel to unbond from the shaft, Hence no rear wheel on your turbo. It just takes time, So be carefull kiddies.. :O

Hey guys, the point that needs to be acknowledged in this discussion is that it only applies to the GTR. For people who think that it does not increase power, your wrong.

Last week I was told by my tuner/mechanic who specialises in GTR's said that he was surprised that I still had the restrictor in, apperantly it's the first thing you do when buying a GTR (remove restrictor), and it DOES NOT harm your engine or turbo.

Anyway I had my car tuned on the dyno and it went from 185 rwkws (stock boost) to 215 rwkws with taking out restrictor and installing adjustable cam gears/dialing in cams. Boost increased to 13.5 psi, but only held 12.7 psi through high revs. However Powewr FC with boost solenoid and hand controller are going in in the next few weeks, to increase boost to 1.1 bar (apprx 16psi) and lean out the fuel (was running 10.8 a/f ratio). Power should increase to 240-250 rwkws.

Therefore by taking out restrictor it increased boost from approx. 9 psi to 13 psi. Definetly a power increase there.

Just thought I'd shine some light into the discussion.

P.S Other mods incl full exhaust (3'' high flow cat), Apexi pod filter kit, oil catch can.

Gday champ. My gtr has apexi intakes and n exhaust from standard dump pipes back.I was told about the restrictor but cant find it.I have stock turbos are u sure removing the restrictor will let it run 13 psi,cos i dont wanna blow my turbos up ay.Im poor n wanna make my car faster without damaging anything.Could u post pics or pm some pics to me of where this restrictor is.One more thing, who is ur tuner?

If you don't have money to fix stuff, don't remove the restrictor. Higher boost is more stress on components :)

GTR's aren't a "I want to mod it for cheap" type car IMO :D People can and do, some get unlucky...

Hahahah this threads awesome - Checking some of the names back in 2003. If only they knew half a decade later, ppl would still whinge about atmo BOV's, Cat overheat dash lights and coil related 4000krpm engine misfire :0

Seems mindless SAU banter / ranting was much the same, even 4 years ago :):D

Travis32 - You lucked out on the thread to comment on, as there must be 7,894,651,324,854 threads on the topic. Your a mechanic I read; check the solenoid on the drivers side strut tower. Squeeze the lines till you find it (yellow band marking it)

Course your stock ceramic turbines wheels could fall off the turbo shaft and fark you motor.

Risk is there, Conjecture runs thick in SAU. Hit the Search button to make up your own mind.

Cheers

    • My idle is set at 950rpm though - Moving the timing around 20 degrees is not really what I'd call a calm idle. That said... neither is chop, by definition. The LS ECU likes to adjust timing to hold idle as opposed to air. It'd work, but generally speaking there'd be a discrepancy in the base idle and the IACV would want to move the timing around anyway to maintain said idle. I think I'm just going to keep the timing steady anyway. Preserve my engine mounts.  My aircon is now officially regassed. As the guy was reversing I noticed my reverse lights do not operate, along with my reverse cam. This is a bit distressing, because 100% of guides talk about which wire to connect to backup cams as "the goes with the [other color] wire". Often when doing conversions. Unfortunately the R34 colour wires aren't documented Unfortunately I had a T56 Magnum gearbox with it's reverse switch, which also isn't documented. Unfortunately there's definitely not documentation for people with both of these in the one car. Unfortunately I forgot. After many hours of this, I have a reverse cam and reverse lights again. The wire going through the trans tunnel to the reverse switch had broken. Upon inspection, it looks like this one wire had about 7 spade terminals and extensions in it.. for reasons I cannot possibly comprehend. I also spent the 750 hours required to clean up the wiring behind my head unit which now looks like this: This is a monumental improvement relative to what used to be there WRT triple gauges, head unit, traction control, wideband controller, and whatever the f**k OEM stuff still exists there in various states of connectivity/needed. Next step is to check in at the Exhaust shop to see/confirm how much clearance I have, to decide what mid mufflers or 'resonators' (which are just straight through, narrower mufflers) I can add and hopefully cut out a lot of exhaust leaks, pinhole, v-band or otherwise. But first step will be to 'take a look' before the next step.
    • Fark the AFM card and Nistune, Haltech Nexus S3, DBW, cruise control, flex fuel, dis dat.
    • It's most likely the bolt/bush where the cover bolts back wore and allowed cover to move forward.
    • Still haven't put the injectors and R35 AFM in so we can tune the bloody thing for the HG highflow it got mid last year! I think I can forecast the upgrade path to a bigger twin scroll, external gate, Haltech, flex setup, Samsonas, dis dat, etc will be .... a while away!
    • Should have taken that opportunity to slot in a twin scroll turbo setup. Maybe next time.
