Whirring Sound From Gearbox

I've got a whirring sound coming from the gearbox, when i put my foot on the clutch the sound stops.

When i take it off the sound starts up again. Am i right in saying it a worn thrust bearing?

How hard is it to remove the manual box and replace the thrust bearing?

My car makes the same noise - its the front gear box bearing. If you were to put your foot on the clutch lightly and it made the noise then it would be the release bearing.

How do I know? My dad is an automotive teacher at TAFE - comes in handy let me tell you!

No need to replace until it becomes excessively loud - mine has been making it for around 15,000km now and is getting no worse - can only hear it in the garage or really late at night going through a tunnel or something. Dad advises that once you drop the gearbox it is easily accessed and the bearing is cheap!

thrust bearing is in your motor. its the big U shaped bearing on your main bearing set. its purpose is to stop the crank shaft from moving back and forth.

Its the input shaft bearing, common in the rb20 box's, I have heard of it occuring in the rb25 box's also.

Don't worry about it. Mine was as noisy as hell for 140,000km's until the box let go. The failure wasn't caused by the input shaft; the failure was related to fatigue caused by the 3ltr. 3rd gear stripped.

It was pretty embarassing sitting in a fast food drive through, the noise was LOUD! bouncing off the brick.

Security, I think the thrust bearing ppls are refering to here is the clutch thrust bearing that pushes on the clutch to disengage it.

I replaced the clutch thrust bearing, it changes gears heaps better.

But i've still got the whirring sound.

I have the same problem, i was told it is the throw out bearing sounds like there are alot of diffent bearings making these noises lol who knows, and like msnismo said there is no need to spend money on getting it fixed as it doesnt harm the performance. But on the other hand the noise still shits ya.
