Have a small problem and don’t know what to do involving the gearbox!

When I go into 1st there are no issues but when I go into 2nd I sometimes hear crunching gears. The rest of the gears have no problem and going down into 2nd isn’t too bad either but from 1st to 2nd it usually crunches.

What’s weird is that some days I wont have a problem at all from the get go while on other days it will still crunch even after a decent amount of driving

Any help would be appreciated.

sounds like synchros...

1 -> 2 is the hardest gearchange

don't know why it is intermittent.

my 2nd is pretty harsh to get into sometimes as well. I'm not gonna bother.

My reccomendtation is to just shift more carefully into 2nd to avoid chipping teeth...

heh - I'm an IT geek, not a mechanic. Good luck

mine does it too, all skylines boxes, well R33, do it, i have driven a nearly new skyline, back when, and still crunched.

Mine does it a lot more when cold, and not tooo bad when warm.

A fix is to change from 1-2 by finding neutral, and then changineg into 2nd.

So first, clutch, neutral, clutch, second.

Also you can use REDLINE SHOCKPROOF oil, but i will get flamed for that, each to his own.

I simply went for a light weight synthetick gearbox oil, with a Nulon gearbox addetive, work a charm, all though still manage a crunch every now and then.

when you say REDLINE SHOCKPROOF oil why get flammed for it> does it cause damage or is there something else Im missing...?

You don't get flamed.

Redline Shockproof is designed for gearboxes in bad condition that are just about to die. It will fix all your problems for a short amount of time until your gearbox dies. (Trades functionality for life)

Apparently Shockproof kills syncros and hence should not be used on new, rebuilt boxes or any boxes that are still in good working condition.

My R33 crunches 2nd too, but I doubt that they were built to crunch, how new was this skyline that you drove? I'm thinking of rebuilding my box, if i do i'll post some pics and let everyone now how it goes.
