How does one know that the gearbox is nearing or at the end of its service life? What are tell take signs?

i) The car will give a slight jolt when changing gear?

ii) Sometimes a gear is "hold" for a good few seconds before engaging a higher gear (noticed RPM is also higher when this happens)?

These are the symptoms that I experience with my A31 currently. Your thoughts and experience will be greatly appreciated.

Almost missed out the most important information. I'm driving a 1991 A31 Auto transmission, with a RB20DET swap.

Thanks.

CT.

Thanks Simon. Your input is much appreciated.

To add on to the symptoms that I had, here's the latest... this morning when I arrived at the office, and while trying to park the car, I put the transmission at "R"... press the accelerator.. and the car didn't move!

I suspect I need to replace the torque converter. Any thoughts?? Is there a doctor (mechanic) in the house??

Dont want to sound cruel but have you checked your fluid levels. Auto gearboxes play up heaps when they are down on fluid... Most importantly though get a service done, they will change fluid etc. Most problems you explain would be fixed by service..
