The CAS is keyed to the exhaust cam so it only goes on one way, when you try and move the CAS it's attached to the exhaust cam which is in turn connected to the intake cam via the cam belt and the crank also from the cam belt, not exactly easy to move it.

And even if you can it wont do shit because all the gears will move along a like they would if the engine was running.

Pretty sure the only way to advance the timing is electronically.

Best way to understand would be rip the CAS off for 10 seconds and you'll understand, cause i suck at explanation.

Hi, my dad and i are attempting to adjust the engine timing for more advance, however we are unable to move the CAS, we have loosened three mounting bolts and it still doesnt move..I've got a R33 with an RB25DE for your info. Any help would be appreciated.

It definitely should move . Undo the 3 x locating bolts at least one full turn . It could be stuck to the gasket , and they do cause a slight indentation in the gasket which may prevent it from turning if bolts are only slightly loosened .

I would only andvance it 4- 6 degrees . I advance mine 4 degrees and use ethanol 10 petrol which has an octane rating of equivilent to 103 .

Also was advised by My local wreckers at moorebank that the rubber between the CAS sometimes will slightly melt and make it hell difficult to move.

On inspection so far it seems that is true..We'rve managed to move it and just testing now for an optimal setting.

Thanks for you guys and sau's help as usual.

Would be nice to talk to more R33 GTS-4 members

Just a follow up on this, When adjusting the engine timing on the RB25DE make sure you put the car under load in 5th gear and check for signs of pinging, I've found all the local fuel pretty substandard (compared to what the fuel companies claim) and wasn't able to advance as much as we thought.

Definately has made a slight difference though.

I used to just keep advancing it. take it for a drive each time, absolutely cain it all the way to the limiter and when it starts to ping back it off a little, dont worry if you've never heard pinging before... you will know what it is if it happens.
