they went with the BA design cause it was a safe design. they wernt gonna make the same mistake twice. the BA is not sumthin completly different. it kept within the design trends, unlike the AU that was like a big soggy looking egg.

remember, holden and ford have to appeal to a massive target market. gota keep ther design appealing to a broad audience.

Holden and Ford's have always been somewhat similar, it is inevitable as they are competitors in the same market!

The BA was the car Ford should have released (exterior styling wise definitely) when they released the AU.

look at the roofline of a AU and a BA

and stop the dick pulling guys

its how it works

styke comes style goes

if someone released a car that looked like a 1980s meteor today what would happen?

I think alot of the whining aboutnew car styling has to do with the fact we all love out 90s Nissans

exact reason the V35 isnt very popular

no, u dont get sacked, ur sales just go dooooooown. i think that is a good reason for car makers to make slow transitions.

Yeah I suppose they just shovel the shit around....

I would love a car competition where people design there own cars and present them to car manufactures.

Then the manufactures pay them Millions if their designs are good.

Ford has 1000 Engineers...what the?

I still vote Hommer-car .....

FFS grow a brain -maybe you should read the shit you spit outa your mouth

keep your f**ked up abusive comments to yourself

does calling me a dumbass make you feel like a man, ey?

(edit: been around 48-215's and Fj's all my life, driven more Fx/Fj's then youve rooted goats, and thats a few)

just have a look at Holdens show car called the "Effijy" (take off on the Fx-Fj)

hasnt improved in 50 years IMO

RIIGHHT, so exactly what does that mean then then if others are the one to grow a brain, then perhaps i am one of them cause it does not make sense. You are comparing a 50year old car with a car that is a tribute to the same car?? The effigy gained massive press and was on coutless front covers with massive praise, therby promoting the holden brand as it was intended.

Also, i find it ironic that you critisise others for making abusive comments and in the same sentence you are the one using abuse.....

I personally think that cars in general have never been better. I have been interested in cars since 1995. Even during the 1990's and up until around 2003 I just couldn't believe how dull most of the cars were.

Commodores and Falcons were extremely boring and ugly

Camry etc had no character

Mazda had zero style.

Atlest now I can look at the Mazda range and be reasonably impressed with their efforts. The Holden and Ford range isn't for me but they are a reasonable design.

What I like about most manufacturers is the way they each have a common theme throughout their range eg. mazda and toyota.

Exciting designs should remain the relm of sports cars and other rarish models.

By the way despite all the shit the AU copped, I feel its then advanced styling cues makes it look not at all out of place on our roads today.

Even the new Merc CLS looks somewhat similar to the AU.

the only thing im worried about is when petrol driven engines cease to exist, and we get to rice up battery/hybrid cars.....better hope i find another hobby by then!

Edit: crap - pressed the post button to early....

I was gonna say, no matter how it goes, there are always gonna be awesome looking cars - even if the designers take bits and pieces from the past...

Toyota proved that no-one went broke building bland cars.

Which is why the Aurion, BF Falcon and VE Commodore look like cardboard cutouts of each other.

Whereas all the different cars in VAG use the same underpinnings and bespoke bodies, the Australian auto industry uses the same bodies with different underpinnings and highlights. :/

line32 yes, very ironic......... Im glad you noticed that =)

32line, got a wife to do that, budola, but thanks for your thoughts.

look, my point with the efijy (not well made, obviously) was that they could have done a MUCH better job. IMO. Ive studied art and design for many years, my mum is a promiment art/design teacher at an exclusive school and has been for decades, and my dad is the treasurer of the 48-215 fj car club of sa.

between my parents and my brother they own like 12 fxs and fjs, that includes rare sedans, utes and road rego'd panel vans. I learnt to drive in a 48-215 sedan and a fj ute. Ive been around these cars my whole life, and as a design student (I work in the area of contemporary design furniture) I know what please my eye and what doesnt.

never forget lads that design and what pleases me will not neccesarily please the next person. car manufacturers have to sell bland cars, to please the masses. I mean, if a car producer made a weird styled door handle, it could in theory destroy that company (if its too hard to use, ppl wont buy the car) - ever noticed how car door handles havent evolved in years?

simply, the efijy could have been evolved differently. it looks VERY much like an american hotrod, whereas maybe they should have based it on the ute - the fx ute remade today could be a very strong seller as it has fantastic lines to work with and evolve. I could seriously see a FJ ute being a gun seller if designed and evolved well, whereas I cant see the efijy doing that, IF it was made to sell to the masses. Sure old skool nuts would buy it, but I dont think it would attract a newer market segment.

now, did ppl know that the first half dozen 48-215's were actually made in USA? the panels were shipped to australia and put together, fixed up, pulled apart, and castings were made...... so there are actually TWO No.1 48-215's ! true - the 1st USA model and the 1st off the AUS production line. 32line, did your uncle who supposidly designed the efijy, know this? if so I can then see why the promo car was designed that way......... but still, and ugly piece of shit IMO. Hasnt evovled "effectively" in 50 years.

yeh...well not that our family history has anything to do with this discussion, but my uncle (who designed the efigy) is a chief designer at holden. he had a hand in the VT and monaro...and was chief designer for the exterior of the VE. i am a graphic designer, my brother is a draftsman, my other uncle is also a graphic designer. my aunty is an aritst & art teacher. i also have an uncle who is an architect. so u can say, design runs in the family.

i find it suprising that u, an FJ ethusiast, would not see what the design was trying to do.

Fortuantly, accomplished designers and motoring journailists all around the world CAN see what the design was trying to accomplish and gave it massive praise.

but, to each his own i guess.

YOU need to be careful to check who you are addressing when you are making replies, while it is an honest mistake and you have made it twice when directed at the wrong person they are inappropriate.

With regard to your commments, that is your opinion and that is fine, but the effigy overall was VERY well received as mentioned above and was featured on car shows, magazines, newspapers so the majority of people don't think it is a 'piece of shit' and if you are such a design expert why arent you the one designing cars for others to call SHIT....

just that mate, a mistake - so what ?

........... and where did I mention that Im a design expert and into car design? this is a forum and yes that is my opinion. meh, so what? my opinion means jack shite - but we all know that the efijy will never go into production as it would very likely to be a commercial loss.

waaayyyyyyyy too many ppl here on SAU take themselves far too seriously these days. how about a group hug? :)
