Brake Pads?

Looking for informed opinion on brake pads that will work fairly well when not up to temperature and then really bite when hot. Presently using Bendix Ultimates, have tried Ferodo DS2500 and not interested in the DS3000's.

The Ultimates are satisfactory all round but don't bite hard enough on the track. So what is the answer?

Personally I have found all bendix pads to be as good as any standard replacement pad, the Metal King were the best they have made..

I use to use Ferodo pads in my ET Turbo (known for poor brakes).. At the time I loved em, as they were by far the best pad I'd come across... Also very cheap, only I'd go through a set at least once a month..

Then I had a standard VL Commo with cop rims and 8" wide turanzas (although the car was cheap and crap, I could still drive through the hills at speeds of 200km/h+ and still retain full grip.. (almost)...

Half the reason was because the standard brake pads didn't slow the car at all through the hills, so was forced to take corners at crazy speeds.. And also because that's how I like to drive my cars...

Anyhow, I then bought some EBC Green Stuff Pads (next level up from EBC's standard replacements) off eBay for $120 new.

Put it this way, the car originally was very difficult to pull up in casual traffic... Then by only changing the front pads, it became literally unbelievable.

I put in a gtech and managed 200 to 0 km/h in 3 seconds easily..

They are still decent when cold, and start working good from around 50 degrees C (very low).

The hotter they get, the better they work...

No brake fade at all (that I could manage on the street in the stock VL)... 1 night I even got the brakes on fire (next step after glowing bright red) on a long steep fast decent through the hills. Still managed to pull up at the bottom of the hill with small flames coming off the brakes.

And even after 6 months of use, they would still amaze me every day... untill they wore out at about the 8 month mark...

So I think what I'm trying to say is, give EBC brake pads a try... they rock..

So you are saying that the EBC pads made your VL be able to outbrake a F1 car?

If you really want to have brakes that work on road and on track, you are going to have to compromise somewhere, personally I'd have to sets of pads for the fronts (don't worry to much about the rears) on for road use, and the other for track. I use Hawk HT-10's in my STi for track work, and used to run Bendix Ultimate's on road.

1) i suggest you get your speedo fixed

2) your sense of time must be seriously warped dude (but also relates to #1... get your speedo fixed)

guest101, you truly are a legend. do you offer driving instruction? I would love to know how to go around corners at over 200kmh on public roads in a car that can barely go that fast. I think I could learn a lot from your impressive skills.

It all comes down to personal choice i think when it comes to brake pads.

Sure we can give you our opinions/recommendations on what we have used.

I have had good results on the track with PAGID/HAWK/EBC but also used ULITMATES with good results.

This was all in my R32 GTS-t RB20.

Are you just doing the occasion club day or are we talking about a track car???

Yeah I had great results with ultimates on a pretty stock gtst with semi slicks, never had any brake problems

I hate the Ultimates almost as much as wankers in commonwhores with no grip on reality. Soft underfoot, grabby initially and not linear relative to pressure. And they are dusty.

Greenstuff are not so dusty but never recommended for a large car on track, even by EBC.

Hawk, pagid, Ferodo, Racebrakes Rb74/Comp2/9 are all loved and hated but they are a starting point.

interesting the differences in our experiences geoff, I ran them for literally years and they were very good.....and normally brake problems are old fluid, air in fluid, old lines, leaky master cylinder etc etc....but I assume this was not the case when you tried them?

I ran the greenstuff once....in a single trackday i destroyed them, they wore a good 3mm more on the leading than trailing edge of the pad - in calipers that had never had a problem running ultimates. And they faded really badly.

If we are talkign about track only pads that is different, but to me street pads *must* work from dead cold for safety

Yeah there are always differences in experience. For cheap and easy to get I've been using Bendix Ultimates in the V8 Soarer and Auto 25t, and the track 25t before the RB74s with braided lines and a stopper. Always feel the same to me, grabby but soft and squishy after and not linear so too easy to lock up as you just can't "feel" the progresion. The RB74s can be a little hard on the first application on a cold morning but have always felt good and firm and progressive.

Oh I forgot to mention I'm a stickler for bleeding before an event and with every service so it wasn't that or the lines.

Pads... We ran EBC Red in Targa, then they went to V2 which I thought wern't as good (we had a performance increase so that may have been a dud comparo)

But THE pad IMHO is SBS Dual Carbon for something like a GTS-t or R with the standard rotor/calipers. They are good in STD Evo too (who cares LOL).

For the larger brakes you may have to drop bacck to Ceramic Carbon...

Either way SBS have many world superbike and MotoGP wins - they are tops for four wheels too

I can second brakes from SBC, good ole sbs pads dual carbons upfront and carbon ceramics down back. Work very nicely, though this is on a alcon package all round.

SBS are good althogh they squeal. EBC ware out way too fast, FULL STOP. Ferodo DS2500 are a great road pads and very good track pad and don't usually squeel at all and last a long time and well priced. DS30000 even better and what I use although more a race pad and not so good cold on road cars.

how much for a set of these ferodo's and where in melbourne can i get them?

I have a midly modified r32 and drive it hard occassionally. Will upgrading to these pads all round with good brake fluid be sufficient for daily driving and the occassional track day?

I don't know although we can send to you cheaper probably anyway and we supply a lot of SAU track guys. Email me [email protected] or call 02 9634 8000. They have just gone up in price accross Australia in last month to $292 Rec Retail for the DS2500 and from memory $375 for DS3000 fro 4 spot Nissan and a bit more for Brembo but we do better than that even though stuff all margin in them. On the subject of brakes we will shortly have brake deflectors available that will also help a lot as only V Spec GTR and late model zeds come with this and much needed to help cool rotors. Lots of guys put big brakes on their cars and go to the track with now ducting or deflectors and still run way too hot.

Phantom32 - I'm in Melbourne and I can tell you the best place to get them is through John @ UAS. (Boosted Zed) By far the cheapeast.

Interesting for the Vic guys that know Blaise in that he is now running the DS2500's on the track in his new EVO and thinks they are great.
