Steve: 98RON should be safe for a standard tune engine, of course you might run into issues with higher levels of boost(Everyone I know is still using 98 on cars with up to one bar boost). For a basic bolt on type car without too much additional boost, 98 should be fine so long as you're not trying to run up a hill in 4th gear at full boost on a hot day without a FMIC and heaps of advanced timing :P

From my high school days i remember the original argument about ethanol fuels. Ethanol is very corosive but it is not in the engine long enough or in high enough concentration to cause any damage. As for economy and rivability, ethan ol is less dence than petrol so in theory the economy should not change but its ability to supressdetonation is awsome. I cant wait to get it in wa. Some of the local workshops get it imported and they say it beats alot of the 110+ octane race fuels on turbo engines. From all i can see, there is no reason not to use it. To me its spells an extra 10% of power and torque and a healthier engine. all for the cost of one retune and cheeper fuel. love it

Thats right ethanol is less dense therefore it will effect economy as you need to burn more to get you the same distance. Ethanol aslo has a lower specific energy rating than normal unleaded fuel so once again for the same mass of fuel you also need more. That being said its ability to supress detonation as it has been said is very good, which may make it a good fuel for performance but not so much for economy as MBT can be found in most cars in cruise with normal 91Octane fuel.

this is all going back a long time ago, and the engine in question was a 9.5:1 medium tuned 308 pushing 260 - 300kw.

Optimax: Ok performance, fouled plugs however.

BP Ultimate: Sharper and more responsive, drank more however.

Mobil Synergy 8000: very-Slight pinging (go find a hill in the bottom of 3rd), similar to Optimax in performance.

And thats all that was out.

As far as things goes now, i'm not sure - My Skyline is dedicated to BP Ultimate at the moment (i'm not overly keen to try optimax, even thou i have iridium plugs - plug fouling was terrible) , altho i'd be interested to see what else is availiable - $1.55 a litre roughly doing 2 - 2.5 tanks a week is somewhat painful on the wallet.

I mean i'll continue to pay it without batting an eyelid (i drive a performance vehicle, its a premium i pay), but to see what other options there are would be nice (finding any service station in canberra is a pita).

Id have to say that my car is much happier running on shell extreme 100ron. Previously was using Mobil synergy 8000 that wasnt bad either. In all honesty though I would have thought that the fuel used when the car is getting tuned would be the fuel of choice purely for the fact that the car has been tuned to that state of fuel...

We don't have Optimax extreme up here but we have found the Mobil Synergy 8000 (especially when bought at Hannell St Wickham) to be outstanding as a pump fuel. 391kw @ 24psi with 2530's in a GTR is not bad...404kw @ 28psi as well....try doing that with Optimax std (not extreme)

You live in the ACT, so your BP and Shell both come from the Shell Clyde refinery in Sydney. The Mobil and Caltex come from the Kurnell refinery. The closest BP refinery to you is Bulwer Island in Qld (the only other BP refinery is at Kwinana in WA) and they don't truck that far interstate from Bulwer Island.

Hence any difference you are feeling between the brands of fuel made in the same refinery is simply placebo effect.

This was roughly 3 years ago as well. I'm aware that most of them are the same stuff now.

i use mobil 8000 and i find that its very responsive and good on economy considering... well my car was tuned to it so i havnt tryed the others but i'm happy with mobil

Since you live in Vic, your Mobil comes from Mobil's own refinery at Altona. They also make all Caltex and some BP there. In fact the Altona refinery makes about 50% of Vic's fuel, so you could pretty safely say the only petrol that's not Mobil in Vic is Shell (they have a refinery in Geelong).

Without fail, every time I fill up with Optimax and drive it exactly the same as I do on the BP, the knock hits 60.

I was involved in a number of refinery consolidations a few years ago, where the oil companies agreed to close down their unprofitable small refineries. They instituted an agreement called Refinery Sharing, where they swap supply depending on which company has a refinery in that area. Transporting millions of litres of fue lis not very profitable plus the Commonwealth and State Governments didn't want 1,000's of fuel tankers driving up and down the highways.

Refinery Sharing in action, the Caltex in Vic is made by Mobil and the Mobil is Sydney is made by Caltex.

Knocking is another term for detonation.

When you have a high compression within the cylinder head, under some circumstances, the fuel/air mix can explode, rather than burn. This is VERY bad, and can lead to all sorts of very Expensive engine work required.

As said, one of the quickest ways to produce it is to up the compression within the head, but things like hotspots in the combustion chamber (which is why deburring and port/head polishing exists) can also cause it.

Decent fuel, water injection, heaps of advance are all "cures" to this nasty nasty problem.

It sounds like a little piece metel ticking on a glass bulb when you hear it, and is usually most noticable under very high load situations.

As i understand the Powerfc has a meter that measures the "loudness" of the Knock, i'm told that its not a huge issue till you push 60 under load (if you're getting values off power - you're in trouble), however my sexy little beast is flat out to push 15 on BP Ultimate.

I'm yet to try Extreme 100 in my R33 but the talk is all good .

Gary with this Refinery sharing do both mobs make this 100 octane E5 fuel for Shell ?

I'm surprised other branded outlets don't offer it but maybe Shell is testing the waters .

I agree with the above statement.

I too am from the ACT, and i too experianced the same effects as Amaru.

I filled up at one of the most popular Shells servos and experianced audible pinging and higher knock readings, but on BP its always a very low reading and havent heard any audible pinging at all.

Louder is bad (infact if you can here it at full noise, you're probably about to have a very large dent in your wallet). Frequency wont really change much as its either there or its not, its a constant thing (fuel is constantly going into your combustion chambers).

It will do it worst under maximum load - 4th gear up a big hill people say is the worst for skylines (so i've heard)...

Reality is, get your car tuned (assuming you have a Aftermarket ECU) by a professional on a dyno, and they will reduce it as much as possible.

wat if you just have the basic mods but no aftermarket ECU should you be worried at all about knocking??

If you're running stock boost you should be ok, as long as you use Premium fuel ie 98RON+.

Stock sidemounts can only do so much to cool the air, but if you're running higher boost your almost certainly gonna run in to problems.

Audible pinging = not good. Sounds like a shower of ball bearings on a tin roof. Not good.

    • Hi all! Looking to relocate the battery to the trunk of an R34 GTT. I want to do it using as many stock GTR components as I can (including the harness protectors from the 34 GTR that run underneath along the chassis to the engine bay). So far I’ve purchased the battery tray from a 33 GTR, as the captive weld nuts are already there just asking to be used. There is also the slight issue of now having to relocate the ABS/TC/Fuel Pump Control ECU, which in GTT’s sits right above where the battery will then sit on the tray. Has anyone already achieved this, and if you have any pics that you wouldn’t mind sharing? It would be great to see how others have done it and where you put them, as there are countless holes in the parcel shelf panel to potentially use. Just trying to get some ideas bounced around, and to help uncover any potential problems I may encounter by  my choice of location. TIA for any help!
    • Brand was ard.   I also threw a brand new battery at it and beefed up the wire from the alternator to battery and added an extra earthing point from the battery
