Hey Guys,

I have done a search and it seems to be the spiggot bush or throw out bearing that is responsible for a lot of noises.

I had a whirring noise ever since I had the car, but it was never a concern, putting the clutch in for rid of it. I had never even considered it a problem.

After drifting on the weekend and doing a lot of clutch kicking, there is a new noise...or perhaps it is just louder.

- It's like the whirring noise, but louder, and it's more of a tap then a whir.

- It goes faster when you rev the engine.

- It goes away when I put the clutch in

- It can still be heard while driving in gear, but only with minimal road noise (ie. its not stupidly loud)

- The clutch works fine, it doesn't slip.

- It's a standard clutch (or atleast if it was changed in Japan, it is a very basic clutch)

- The gearbox seems fine, I can still get all gears.

Does anyone know if it's worth worrying about? Or just let it go?

When i first purchase my NA r32 skyline it had very much the same or similiar symptons. I took it to a local Gearbox and Differential specialist to have the gearbox reconditioned. The advised the main shaft bearing was stuffed and needed replacing as well as 5th and reverse gear sleeve needed repairs. It cost me in total $780 with 12mths/20,000k warranty. I havent had a problem since. Hope this helps.

I would be worried. Had exact same symptoms and car is now undriveable.

Took it for a spin and soon as I pressed the clutch in the whole drivetrain locked up on me,car stalled, and its now permanently stuck in 4th gear.

When the noise first started I was told it was the "thrust bearing" as the noise went away when I pushed the clutch in. It locked up 150kms later.

Possibly consider an input bearing aswell?

I had a stuffed input bearing and the symptoms were very similar to yours. A good way to test is to drive the car in 4th gear. If the noise almost gooes away it would seem to be the input bearing. Something to do with the fact that 4th gear is almost a 1:1 g'box ratio. I'm sure someone on here can explain it better than I can!!

Just an update. It was all the bearings in the box. They were totally shagged. One fell apart when we split the case.

Cost me $800 including labour for new bearings/cir clip/keys.

was it still alrite till the time u got it fixed?

i think i may have the same problem, not quite sure and just want to know if it can wait till i gett a new clutch.

1 of the bearings fell to bits. If I let it go any longer, that would have fell apart while I was driving.

If you know you have bearing problems, get it done now...if you're gonna get a clutch anyways, why not get it now?

90% of the information I got regarding the gearbox from friends that drift and the forums where wrong, and if I took their advice I would be up for a new box by now. I am talking about numerous threads I searched for, not just this one.

The forums are usually a great spot to get information, but in this particular case, it was not. Get it checked by a gearbox place and go from there. A gearbox place drove mine new the problem and gave me a quote, and it cost me nothing for them to do that.

They obviously can't tell all your problems, but they should be able to detect the major ones. I expected to have to do syncros and a gear or 2, but they were ok. Best budget for a little more incase you need syncros/gears.

if you push the clutch pedal in and the noise goes away then its the gear box bearings that are noisy NOT the throwout bearing for the clutch. If you push the pedal down and the nosie happens thats when its the throwout bearing.

When you have the engine running clutch out and box in neutral the gearbox is still spinning its just that no gear is selected. When the pedal is pushed in the clutch disengages and then there is no drive btween the engine and the gearbox will then be stationary, hence the noise going away.

Hope this clears things up.

eXc, where abouts did you get your gearbox rebuilt, i'm guessing it was in newcastle somewhere.. $800 is pretty decent.. did that include labour of pulling the box out?...

Also - how does it feel to drive, all noise completely gone?

I used newcastle gearbox and diff.

That price was drive in, drive out, I could have saved $275 if I just took the box in, but I couldn't get any help so I drove it in.
