LOL… few reasons.

1.) I’ve been here too long and see the same questions over and over and over.

2.) I’m sick of people asking for advice then not taking it when given and asking the question in another way.

3.) I’m just an angry old man who doesn’t have a tolerance for people who don’t listen and who don’t search.

Next we’ll see some thread asking how much power the stock air box can handle before a pod is required..

And guess what, that’s been answered/proven by many people on here from their own experience and cars.

Almost everyone has a pod filter.

Then almost everyone one of them have asked how to or where to get a heat shield for it.

Or how to get a box made for it.

I don’t understand how these people’s brains function.

A 7.3 second search on here for “AIR+BOX” or “POD+FILTER+BOX” will get a bunch of threads. It will have people posting their results or experience on them.

It will show you what power people are making with stock air boxes.

Any skyline owner.. especially the ones on this forum will know of the MINES R34 GTR.

Everyone of them would have seen the clip of “drift king” and others driving it around a track and how they are amazed at the power etc..

Everyone will see that the car still utilises the STOCK GTR AIR BOX. Yes it has a MINES intake snorkel to it but it is still a STOCK AIR BOX with a hi flow panel filter and aftermarket intake snorkel.

Everyone knows that car makes over 500hp.

So I have to question what makes people “THINK” they need to use a pod filter on their skylines with power levels of “MOSTLY” under 200rwkw.

Apart from making more sound, they do NOTHING for performance at these sort of power levels.

Car has stock air box, you buy a $80 panel filter and $10 worth of PVC piping and spend 1 hour cutting holes and putting it all together to make a duct to the air box.

Instead people spend $100 on a pod, $50 for an adapter to mount it to the AFM, then get sound and heat soaked intake air.

Then they go spend god knows how much for a patrician or air box made of carbon fibre or aluminium or white gold or something..

And STILL get worse results than the stock setup.

I was hoping that my SARCASTIC reply would make the person understand that it’s obvious what would yield the better result and cost less without calling him/her names.

Edit: Just thought i'd mention that I like the sound of my POD.. i wana keep it.. And the r32 stock box is hella restrictive if any one has actually seen one

I agree!!

If pod filters don't help then why does every man and his dog have one?

I know it made a resonable difference to both my r32 and my brothers.

It depends on the power being made.

I ran mine up on the dyno with the stock turbo when it was making ~164rwkw. Back to back with the stock box and a K&N Pod freshly oild ther was a ZERO increase in power anywhere in the rev range.

And this was with the bonnet open and cool air blowing over the pod, in real life conditions the bonnet is closed and air passing through the radiator passes in to the pod. So power 'should' be down slightly due to the hotter air.

The tuner said he's found (dyno results back to back) the stock r32 air box is good up to ~200rwkw then it requires either a pod or CAI in to the stock box, it can be pushed to ~400hp at the fly or 220-230rwkw but over that it really needs to be opened up.

It does sound faster with the pod but. :down:

How did you come to that conclusion?

Do you have a flow bench at home?

What were your results from the flow bench?

You say it’s restrictive but where is your proof?

By looking at it?

Forget I said anything.

I’m sure someone will be more than happy to take your money to make you up a “BOX” for your sound making pod.

Oh, while you’re at it, why not, replace that factory intake pipe from pod filter to turbo…

Have you seen it? It’s got kinks and it’s bent and made of rubber. I put it on my imaginary flow bench and it was really restrictive.

Make sure you get it made out of titanium too. It will make your pod sound even better and it will reduce weight as your wallet will be much lighter.

These are definitely restrictions in your 170rwkw rb20.

mate... think about what you want here

you want a pod for its sound... but you want an airbox for its "stealth" factor...

what do you think will happen to the sound if you enclose a pod? its going to sound the same as a friggin airbox!

oh, and GTST didn't come down in the last shower - he knows what he is on about and has some good advice for you. take it or leave it, but don't dispute every word he says

hmm nah ive had the top off the airbox, and it sounds quite pox, no note. Want the airbox so that it looks legal not otherwise. Have you put a pod in a standard box before? A number of people said its got exactly the same induction notes, just a lil quieter. Thats why i wanted it

As for the Standard air box.. go have a look at it, its got quite a few hard angles, and the induction pipe is tiny. Wouldnt exactly be difficult to improve on.

Ohh ive heard from quite a few performance shops, that a pod in a box is a decent upgrade, why does GTST care whether i want one? for all i know GTST could be an 11 year old kid so yeh, dont REALLY care about his opinion in this or any matter :)

as i read your posts i see a child with their hands over their ears going "na na na na" and only stpooing when they see something they want to hear...

I've seen with my own eye's ~4.5years ago when mine was making 164rwkw.

Myself I didn't believe Tim as my old 5ltr VS Commodore saw decent gains by opening up the inlet, turbo is a whole different kettle of fish. They don't see the power losses as N/A's do when an inlet restriction is placed on them.

An upgrade for what? Sound or performance.

If you bought Zoom mag back then or even fairly recently it was Tim Possingham (prior owner of RPM performance and founder of horsepowerinabox) who did the back to back for myself, as I mentioned earlier he found through back to back dyno runs the limit of the stock box with stock cai was around 400hp at the fly.

far out i feel dumb as i was always under the impression the pod made a power gain of least a few kw but from reading this i think im going to put my stock airbox back on and turn it into a CAI. I never stopped to think about the hot air which would be getting sucked in lol is this a better option ?

Wow, I'm glad GTST put it all out in the open, I could never be bothered or cared to vent THE EXACT same thought's he did.

FYI: I bought my car with a pod, but I actually went out and bought a stock airbox and panel filter to replace it.

All I can say is state your priorities before you post and if you won't take any advice why post asking for help? If you don't agree with the advice the least you can do is appreciate the fact that someone offered advice!

Didnt ask for info about whether its beneficial, just wanted to know where to buy em, dun need people forcing there opinions.

There's all this talk about how restrictive a the stock airbox would be but what do you thinks going to happen when you shove a pod in a stock airbox. The pods going to be pretty damn close to the sides of the airbox resulting in restricted flow. Its a silly idea. Grab a stock box and throw a decent cai in to it, an aftermarket panel airfilter and you will be suprised how loud the stock air box is.

The only difference in sound is the stock airbox sounds loud outside but not inside the car as the noise comes from the large (in my case 100mm) CAI. Where as a pod has lots of noise inside the engine bay which you can hear more so as its closer.

Shoving an airbox over the pod will loose that sitting in the open pod sound.

Not to sound like a prick, but if you want the sound and want it to look stock just use the stock box, aftermarket flat panel filter and drill a tiny hole underneath in the air box.

That'll make the whoosing noise and it'll still flow as good as the pod. Even better still it won't get warm air like an exposed pod will. Best of all worlds!

i think we are wasting our breath here guys.. he obviously wants a pod and doesn't want any advice to the contrary

i personally won't be replying to any of his threads from now on.. why waste my time if the advice is not appreciated (regardless of whether or not he wants to take the advice)?

Which is the advice we have been offering from the beginning.

A pod in a stock airbox = restrictive and it won't sound like a normal pod sitting in the engine bay with nothing around it.

A stock airbox with a cai and aftermarket panel filter is pretty much as good as your going to get with regards to sound, stock a stock look and performance.
