HI All,

I hope this isnt to weird but i have been fantasising about getting in my car for the first time and going for a spin.

What was your first drive like after the long wait of the import process? Better then expected, worse, did your car smell?

I have thoughts of fat wharfies steeling my shit and taking a dump on my seat nooooooo!

Cheers Stink

ah yess the smell... if anyone knows wat it is/where to get it post it up!

the day i got the keys and as soon as i turned on the car it was a smile from ear to ear lol.. then after driving it, it was a smile for about a week lol... coming from a 92 corolla csi to liner haha

It was a bright summers afternoon - and I was on my way to GTAutos to pick up my r33. My bro was driving me in his S2000, we have the top down - and Im so eager to hand over the Bank CHQ for $17,000 and get the hell outta there in my new ride.

First thing I see is that Jarrod was washing my car - man did that car shine that day. The new HR Racing Rims, the fresh interior - gawd, I would have thought I died and went to heaven!

Hurried in, and paid the cash, Waynes dad quickly went through the warranty - and then I got handed the keys! But first problem! The cars immob locked the engine and I couldnt start it up. In my hurry, I couldnt figure out what was going on - then my bro told me to press the unlock button, and presto - she let out an almighty yawn!

I close the door, and Look around - this is my car now! I couldnt believe it! 6 years of working in retail paid off! As I drove it out of the dealership I couldnt help but have a huge grin on my face! You know that new car smell that we all get when we first get our skylines - that was what I was getting high on that day!

Still remember I wasnt getting used to the gears and all - as the honda civic had a very light clutch - this was more heavy. And gawsh! The turbo! It was sooooooooooooooooo nice!!! And the sports car ride...I was heading down mountain hwy that day - and it was just like wow! I remember I kept thinking "man im so glad I didnt end up with that non turbo supra!!"

I swear, I will never forget it - its just the most awesome experience when you finally own something that you worked so hard to get...

I took my car for a cruise with another GTR (that one dropped me off at the sellers place) when i first got it

It was missing bits (radio and aircon etc) but i still loved every second of it

2 weeks later i got it back from the mechanics where it was done up and had all the goodies installed like radio, TEINS etc and we took it to a tuner for an after hours tune. After the tune i got i it and the tuner insisted i give it a thrash to make sure i was happy - the VERY first thing i thought at redline in 1st gear was...

"Wow, this's quick, WTF have i gotten myself into! The magazines dont lie about the speed"

But now that feelings gone, and it will need double the power for that feeling to come back

Hope that helps

Hey Emsta,

Great post mate, this is what i was after you know!

An explanation of the experience.

Cheers Buddy

Well i just picked mine up after an absense from a turbo in 2 years

Still cant wipe the grin off my face :P

Its everything that i remember about a turbo car - after driving n/a cars since my last its almost like getting one for the first time

There will be plenty of fun times ahead

I had an odd first drive of my new R33 (it was only a few weeks back).. I had never driven one before and coming from owning lots of 180s and silvias I expected it would drive pretty similar - no friggin way!

the clutch was heaps heavier, it booted that much harder and was a far more comfortable ride. I prefer the skyline interior waaaay more than the 180 / silvia interiors - though it is a series 2 r33 so they have pretty nice dash layout and good steering wheel etc.

I managed to get pretty lost on my way back which was shite, but i got all butterflys in my stomach as soon as I got on an open stretch and put the foot down.... zoooooooom. and everyone looks at you in these cars. that has been weird.

Last night I fitted new leather gaiters, new gear knob and an apexi power pod filter and went for a spin... ohhh la la it now sounds so much tougher with the induction note and the interior feels even nicer.

One thing that made the speed of a new turbo car for me a bit lacking this time was that the previous owner of my car graciously took me for a spin in his fullhouse R32 GTR, just through 1st and second and MY GOD that thing was so fast it made my eyes sink in my head and vision blud when he changed gears - it practically 'jumps' when the gears engage. FAAAAAAAARk that was a fun ride. then i hopped in my almost stock r33 and drove home ahahahahaa now you see what i mean.

when i picked up my r33 it was a 50min drive from my place, when i finally got to the dealer to pick up my new baby, i was itching to get they keys.

After filling out the last few papers, he handed over the keys, went out the back to the garage where my new baby was sitting and their she was with the bonnet up, but sparkling.

I asked a few quick questions about where trans dipstick was, then i hoped in got familiar with the buttons on the dash, blinkers, then started her up and it put an ear to ear grin on my face.

After leaving, the whole way home the car smelt so good and i was to scared to bring it on boost , as ive always driven an 88 prelude, and it felt so roomy compared to my other car.

when i finally reached home i reckon i had ppl comin over all day to look at it

Picked mine up from Sydney, made it back to Canberra and around 3 minutes from home a turbo blew.

Got it back for take 2, a few hours later and the gearbox blew. What a great way to start GTR ownership... at least it prepared me :D

i took it for a spin when i test drove it... loved it :) then a few days later i picked it up and drove it for the 2hour drive home...

When i got it, it smelled like fried rice an insence(sp?) wasnt good. but now i got it smelling like my old car... and i get compliments about it lol i dont get it.. people like the smell of my cars... i should become a car detailer :D

looks like most of us felt like homer simpson in that episode where he bought the gun - remember he was itching to get into the gun store to use the toilet?

I always imagined driving out of the dealership in a supra - so this was just that extra special :D

lol. all i know is when i first picked up my car at about 2pm that afternoon, i didnt get back out of it till about 4am that night. :ninja:

wish it was summer when i picked it up but, woulda tested the sunroof out straight away, was like, middle of winter but lol :D

I agree with u there - i used to own a 95 180sx as well and i think the skyline definetely rates over it. Better interior and brakes and mine doesnt handle too bad with coilovers

GTR sounds insane :P

yeah man, i'd never been in a car that modified before. I asked him lots of questions - he seemed to have done absolutely everything.

fuel pump / rail upgrades, new turbos, full zorzt, aftermart management, you name it, it had it. it has just been fully rebuilt with all forged internals too and he was running it in which is why he couldn't thrash it through into 3rd and beyond...

I can't find the same air freshener that my car came with originally... I miss that smell...

mine came with 3, two not even opened! f**k yeah JDM air freshner! Although he also left me with an ashtray full of JDM cigarette butts and a card for a "massage parlour".

Well I bought my R33 turbo monday and I cant stop smiling...being my first turbo and my previous ride being a pulsar this is a huge power increase. i drive 80km to work and back everyday and cant wait til clock off time. So happy with it.

I took the train to SSV dealer... Mark picked me up in MY "to be" car... as soon as I spotted him in traffic I had this big grin on my face... kinda like looking at your family member competing in some sports activity...

The car was sparkling silver! He took me down to the dealership to finalise the papers and payment.

It was after 5 pm so Mark and his crew went home and I was stuck there sitting in my car... observing the interior... I wanted to drive it but I just sat there admiring the car from the inside... got some awesome tunes I brought with me lol then I took off... I went to my girlfriend's at the time place... and she actually caught up to me in traffic... saying I was driving like a grandma haha...

And yes my car still smells brand new inside...

    • Mate you saved be from dying in the Perth summer. AC wasn't changing direction and just going into diagnostics mode fixed it. You're a legend and I would shout you a beer if I could!
    • Unfortunately effort gone to waste, you will have substantial issues with how the manifold and wastegate have been integrated. You would be so much better off with a modified stock manifold like this: https://hypergearturbos.com/product/rb25detexgatedmanifold/   OR literally just getting a off the shelf Sinco or 6Boost manifold as myself and others have mentioned.
    • Yuck. But it's kinda the same principle, moving timing around to make car run bad but sound good.... I went for a more spirited tuning drive to iron out a few things. Car no longer stalls, and it loved to dip RPM low when you clutch in. After tuning this (and the 4-5 tables that HPTuners/LS1 OEM ECU wants for idle air correction) it's now behaving somewhat normal. All expected because there's a new TB, new Intake manifold and that new TB which is 102mm vs 78... has an entirely different IAC passage which is smaller because ????? Unfortunately at this point I went to make further fine tuning changes to avoid it flaring up, you know... _tuning_ the HPTuners dongle died. Well to be more accurate - The USB cable died in a fashion that anyone who has ever charged a phone will recognize. After the app demanding I resync it 50 or so times (which all 'succeeded' but all failed) the device does not want to sync and I've logged a ticket with support to see if it's fixable. US Support said it was a 'storage issue' but after removing the SD card inside it and formatting it/fixing it the issue does persist. Unfortunately usually the fix is "Turn in your old dongle and pay $700 for the upgraded one" it's cheaper because I get some free licence credits I unfortunately don't need. However I'm 10 minutes down the road from HP Tuners AUS/VCM so at least I won't need to post it, and logged a new ticket for support over here. Definitely drives different. My SOTP dyno believes it's probably making 310-320kw instead of the 280 before.  It scrambles for traction a little now whereas it previously different. It drives like a bigger cam car up top even though the cam is smaller, likely due to the cam not being advanced 6 degrees. The timing is deliberately low and the fuel is very rich so who knows if this will improve on the dyno. It may, imperceptably. Also funny is removing the pineapples definitely makes the car squat more and axle tramp less. So this behavior of having more top end, squatting more, and scrabbling for traction more makes me think = more power. But I could have just been sitting on the threshold of that kind of behavior before. Time will tell if my butt dyno is calibrated right. I need the exhaust leaks fixed before dyno tune for obvious AFR related reasons - I repositioned the pipes but I'm not confident it's fully sealed even if it is better. At least the car does drive around while I cannot tweak/tune it for now. And I have aircon again. medium success!
    • Don't use that manifold. Please don't use that manifold. Sunk cost fallacy is not worth the later pain. None of these will be relevant to the change that will come from the different turbo and manifold. As in, the effect of the exhaust will be nil, regardless of what else is changed. And all the cam and fuel system stuff is not changing either way, so has no effect. The turbo and manifold (and to a small extent the wastegate)....big change.
