Well teh alternator died on dad's cef, so I chucked the VIN into Nissan Fast to see what else I could use. It came back with nothing, which was really odd... I would have thought it'd be the same as an R32 GTSt or something at least.

Anyways, being stranded in Syd I gave Advan (closest workshop to my parent's place) who told me to give SSS Automotive a call for spare parts, and they found a second hand alternator on the shelf with the exact same part number... and it came out of an R31 skyline. The guy who was on the phone, then told me they had been dealing with cef's for a while, and that most of the ancillaries and even the engine was identical to the R31's (I'm assuming the GTS-R's).

Well fancy that... my old man drives a newer model Pintara! I'll keep that in mind when I give shit to R31Nismoid about driving a box.

Oh yeah, thumbs up to SSS Automotive too. Ended up gettin a brand new alternator instead of a secondhand one (hey, dad's money not mine)... but they seem to know they're stuff.

End cost: $360 for parts and labour. I seriously cbf working in my parent's garage with bugger all tools to do it myself, even if it is only 3 bolts and a plug.

Tell u on monday morning when i've got the bill exactly how much it cost. It was thru a local auto elec who specialised in bosch and hitachi alternators (ceffy one is a hitachi).

how's that for customer service...

I initially rang Just Jap as well to see if they could help me out while chasing prices on an alternator.

They just called me to find out how I went and to see if I needed anything else.

I'll have to pop in and see em now... they sound like a good bunch.

Just picked up the car, and works like a charm.

Ended up getting a brand new Bosch BXN1231 fitted for $400 from High Auto Electrical Service (27 Hope St Ermington 2115 NSW... 02 9874 4135).

The BXN1231 is what came on late model VL's and R31's, the earlier models came with the same Hitachi LR180705B... which is the same as the one on the cef. So it wasn't much hassle to change to the Bosch one, which comes with a one year australia wide warranty.

Urgh. Old man's insistance on fitting brand new parts as replacement sometimes amazes me. If it was me I'd have just chucked in a secondhand R31 unit for $50 in the backyard with a 12mm.

I am one for new parts :O

I figure if I replace everything brand new then it wont break again in a hurry, but a second hand item might go to shit one week later.

Thanks for the part numbers

you got that right.

original alternator died in the the middle of brissie at midnight. :)

threw a 50 buck second hand alternator on. it shat itself a week later, car was stuck down at springwood for a week before i got a autoelec to put on a new one. working okay for 250 bucks (no labour costs) :O
