Yeah; driving home from Hurstville last night in the pouring rain... trip usually takes 40minutes; last night it took me close to 90minutes. Rain lowered visibility; everyone was driving like idiots but worst of all; my 34 was going a bit suicidal on me.

Basically driving in a straight line over 50km/hr would result in the ass-end getting a bit unhappy so yeah; just took it slow all the way home. Nonetheless, the guys behind me still saw a little shaking of the tail feather - NOT COOL!

So it's time for some new rubber... want some that offer good performance; and will LAST a while. This set only lasted me 3months :D

Need them in 18" (235s up front and 265s out back) - anyone got suggestions on who, what, when, where and why?

lol stan I know how you feel - I take it these were the same set you went to the trackday with?

Because the trackday destroyed my rear tyres, I was running on near slicks (<0.5mm tread + steel belts showing) for a few months and it was very very scary in the wet.

If you want a long lasting tyre, get something cheap and mediocre gripping like Nankang NS2s.

Tyres with good grip = softer compound = shorter life.

So subsequently,

Tyres with longer life = harder compound = poor grip

PS: Stop doing burnouts :D :D

PPS: In the end I got Bridgestone Firenzas for my rears at a weak 235 size. :( Cost me $300 for a pair.

That's exactly what I'm thinking James... I got my current tyres a day before the track day; they were purchased purely for the "performance" aspect of them.

Little did I know they were like those eraser rubbers; a few little burnouts and all gone :D

Nangkangs are looking like an awesome choice at the moment.

BTW; I recall there was one particular R34GTR at a trackday on Nangkangs that absolutely RAPPED!

Oh BTW; my car is now "off the road" - I don't want to risk my life, nor do I want to put other people's lives at risk.

Tried running it with stock boost; doesn't make a difference.

Nankangs? are you serious, mum had some on the front of the vectra, farken DEADLY tyre, no grip at all! all over the shop, now its hard to get tyres in 215,45,17. so we settled with some Yokos, Es100 (i think) around 250 a tyre but AWESOME, grip wet and dry is great.....

Ive got some BF Goodrich Profilers on the skyline, they are cheap, last long and provide good grip in the dry and pretty good in the wet.

Stan, ive got some good tyre guys in Wooloomooloo, wouldnt trust my car with ANYONE else! I have tried different places in the past and they have damaged my cars and done a shit job etc..

Yeah nankangs are down there with Falken ziex 365 or what ever those crap ones are...Stan once you have over 200rwkw you are in the world of needing expensive tyres just to get forward motion when the throttle is planted :(

If you are really worried about traction try RE55's or similar, they're not going to help you in the wet though, just in the dry, but they will be very good in the dry. Also they will wear out fast, for the reasons listed above by Wink

Or, if you dont want to spend much on tyres (which is what the reason behind this thread probably is), get something crappy like Kuhmo Ecstas - i have them, they're ok in the wet and in the dry they're about the same, they really are rubbish. Which is great for oversteer, as long as you can control it.

Nankangs are f**king awful.

I had the bloody nankang's from tempe on my car for the oran day and... well, never again.

I now have Federal 595SS 265/35 R18's on the back. $642 for the pair, fitted and balanced. Beautiful rubber. There's alot more grip in the wet. Yet to drive in the dry (stupid weather). I read somewhere that the targa winning GTR was wearing these tyres.

Getting front tyres soon.

I have got Nexens? think that is it!

Paid $135 (235/17/45) for the fronts and $190 (255/17/40) for the rears. Hadnt heard alot about them but for the money cant complain! Fairly hard compound (only about 20% wear in 2-3 months - I drive 700kms a week!) and fairly decent wet weather pattern.

Nankangs are crap if you ask me - they are the only company that make the size (19/215/35) that is on my wrx and I am forever replacing them as they are soooo soft! One set only lasts 2-3 months.

Best tyres I ever had were Intercontinentals - lasted well over 12 months and the only tyre that I didn't aquaplane with - but bloody expensive! around $400 ea for 235/17/45 but that was over 2 years ago - may be cheaper now?

Try getting some quotes for the new Falken FK452s. I got my set a few weeks ago from Bob Jane here in QLD 235/40/18; 265/35/18 and they are awesome. They are a cross between the old FK451 and St115. Good value for $$ and look good too

its called Spinning Wheel Tyres, speak to peter or fulvio, top blokes, the guy that does the wheel alignments has to be one of the best around!

At the moment I'm running on Falken GRB 451s... they were good when they lasted :) Got these at $200 each for 265s so not complaining (except for their lifespan)

I've been given a few good reccomendations at some solid prices; thanks again to everyone who gave their input!

Yoko ES100 are good, never had a problem with them, stiff sidewall. Wet and dry performance was great.

Falken FK451's are about the same if not slightly better. Quieter and more comfortable due to the softer sidewall, but it flexes a bit on cornering.

    • I think you're really missing the point. The spec is just the minimum spec that the fuel has to meet. The additive packages can, and do, go above that minimum if the fuel brand feels they need/want to. And so you get BP Ultimate or Shell Ultra (or whatever they call it) making promises to clean your engine better than the standard stuff....simply because they do actually put better additive packages in there. They do not waste special sauce on the plebian fuel if they can avoid it. I didn't say "energy density". I just said "density". That's right, the specific gravity (if you want to use a really shit old imperial description for mass per unit volume). The density being higher indicates a number of things, from reduces oxygen content, to increased numbers of double bonds or cyclic components. That then just happens to flow on to the calorific value on a volume basis being correspondingly higher. The calorific value on a mass basis barely changes, because almost all hydrocarbon materials have a very similar CV per kg. But whatever - the end result is that you do get a bit more energy per litre, which helps to offset some of the sting of the massive price bump over 91. I can go you one better than "I used to work at a fuel station". I had uni lecturers who worked at the Pt Stanvac refinery (at the time they were lecturing, as industry specialist lecturers) who were quite candid about the business. And granted, that was 30+ years ago, and you might note that I have stated above that I think the industry has since collected together near the bottom (quite like ISPs, when you think about it). Oh, did I mention that I am quite literally a combustion engineer? I'm designing (well, actually, trying to avoid designing and trying to make the junior engineer do it) a heavy fuel oil firing system for a cement plant in fricking Iraq, this week. Last week it was natural gas fired this-that. The week before it was LPG fired anode furnaces for a copper smelter (well, the burners for them, not the actual furnaces, which are just big dumb steel). I'm kinda all over fuels.
    • Well my freshly rebuilt RB25DET Neo went bang 1000kms in, completely fried big end bearing in cylinder 1 so bad my engine seized. No knocking or oil pressure issue prior to this happening, all happened within less than a second. Had Nitto oil pump, 8L baffled sump, head drain, oil restrictors, the lot put in to prevent me spinning a bearing like i did to need the rebuild. Mechanic that looked after the works has no idea what caused it. Reckoned it may have been bearing clearance wrong in cylinder 1 we have no idea. Machinist who did the work reckoned it was something on the mechanic. Anyway thats between them, i had no part in it, just paid the money Curiosity question, does the oil system on RB’s go sump > oil pump > filter > around engine? If so, if you had a leak on an oil filter relocation plate, say sump > oil pump > filter > LEAK > around engine would this cause a low oil pressure reading if the sensors was before the filter?   TIA
