Hi guys... as summers drawing nearer I think we all need to think of ways to beat the heat so to speak.

I'm wanting to start making a prototype heat shield for the R32 GTST. No one makes heat shields for this car/ well i havnt found any decent ones on the market. So i'm asking for your help. I plan to make one for myself. and then i'll post up the pictures of the finish product.

If there is enough interest I will get more made up to sell. The price shall be average as I plan to use decent grade aluminium and planning to get them professionally cut/bent.

I've figured why theres a lack of heatshields for our car. There is jack all room if you are running the stock intercooler:

how you can help: Can you please upload pictures of your pod area in your engine bay so I can get an idea of how every1's setup looks like.

also, anyone with pictures of their r32 gtst with a heatshield already please upload them as well so i can gather ideas :).

Also, would there be a preference of a box or an apexi heat shield kinda design.

Thanks, Ben.

bump, this would be very usefull, there have been MANY of these threads popping uip lateley. I myself (if nothing arises soon) and going to make a cardboard template and get my dad to make me one out of aluminum or sheet steel (hes a fabricator) with a perspex lid. if i do that i will post a thread bout it.

Can't be bothered taking a photo, but the setup hasn't changed since I bought it, so here are the Japanese supplier photos I received before I imported:

In fact, cruising through Prestige's sold vehicle section would give you a good idea of commonly used setups.

cool.. the pics are decent.. but would be better if they were pictures focused on the pod area..

If someone has time or can be bothered you'd be a great help

I'm sure some of you have specifically taken photo's of your pods in your engine bays

I can make my setup no problem though I only need pics of other peoples setups to get an accurate idea of how i should design the box to make it universal for the r32 gtst.. Theres jack all room for error.

I had a chance to start designing a template today.. its going to be pretty impossible to make a FULLY enclosed box.. though the design so far is looking promising.. I will keep you guys updated.

Here's mine, it has a greddy intake kit with old style trust airinx filter.

Good luck trying to make a box that suits all pod filters, there are so many and they are all so different.

Mine is impossible - i'll make a heat shield for it myself eventually.

I'll see if its viable to start making them for setups similar to mine (using the apexi bracket for the pod as well as having stock IC piping).

I'll come up with a working prototype and then gather numbers. It doesnt look too great though as there arent that many of us with our setup. And once you get a FMIC the setup will be kinda redundant.

Feel free to express interest now though

Either way this will serve as a guide for future reference

Ben.

oh thats a GREAT help thanks man ^^ :P

i msg'd freddy from topstage, even he doesnt .. or is unwilling to make them anymore for the R32 gtst unless your from his state so you can go in for a test fit.. he said that if its off by even 2mm it wont fit..

ohh and about the topstage shield.. i can see the left side wall of it goes down to the bottom but is the a top back wall of the shield that goes across the top of the heat shield (horizontally)?

thanks, Ben.

hmmm i dont understand you there mate, but on the airflow meter side theres a shield there & that goes to the front of the car and then sits flush with the suspension tower, and the top cover just sits of the top, when i get my car back from the panel shop i'll take another pick of it with the lid off.

before i got that top stage box i tried making one out of tin sheet i got from bunnings it turned out ok but when i bent it to make a lid the bends where all over the shop looked pretty dodgey.

just thought i'd update you guys..

I've got a rough workign alluminium prototype.. Upload foto's of it later tonight...

Bare in mind its the first work prototype lol.. i used normal art scissors to cut the alluminium.. so its abit bare atm

Don't laugh at my attempt lol.. remember its the first working prototype.

I'm going to make a refined one when i have the time.

The lid is still yet to be mounted.. waiting for the glue to dry. I really cant be bothered making these to sell as it will be too difficult to get them to the EXACT measurements for each car.. 2mm off and the thing is useless.

I can provide direction/instruction for those who wish to make their own. I have a few detailed sketches with approx measurements and dimensions.

Thanks, Ben.

    • Yep, that was one of the things we learned fast in the past with our MX5. When you drive with the top down, you are effectively standing out in the sun, 100% of the time, and not getting in any shade (because roads aren't shaded generally!). Just like standing out in the middle of a field on a sunny 27C day is a bit of a bad plan, so is sitting in a MX5 without sun protection.
    • I also just ordered some Frankenstein bolts and side mounts to fit a hard top Just in case I do find one, basically so it doesn't need to be fixed to the car with only the front latch.......and then gaffa tape to keep it in place for the RTN journey from wherever I get it
    • If your temps are fine now, you probably won't have any issues with where your vents are as they don't look right up at the windscreens high pressure area, so any differences when giving it the beans for extended happy laps would be minimal, but, they should vent heaps when stuck in traffic  Much like how that reverse cowl on my SS let "visible" heat out when stationary, but, because it was basically at the windscreen my coolant temps on the Hwy actually raised because air was being fed into it at speed (110kph), to only come back down to around 90° when I got off the Hwy And your 100% correct about the NC currently not needing vents, but, if I was to add a turbo, and a oil cooler and intercooler in front of the condenserand radiator, and then take it to the track???? It is apparently a recommend requirement if I don't want to worry about coolant or oil temp issues, but, any of the above are possible scenarios, over time As it sits now, with the triple pass radiator and stock air conditioning system, I have absolutely no issues with either temps or air conditioning efficiency, I've been basically daily driving thie car for the last month, both on the Hwy, and peak hour, bumper to bumper traffic, but, that's pretty much expected from basically a standard engine  Talking about no issues daily driving, it was 39° the other day and I was sitting in bumper to bumper traffic on the M5 and then M7, with the top down, and with the air conditioning blowing nice cold air on my feet, balls, and face, well, there was one issue, my head and arms got pretty sun burnt Note to self: leave a hat and sunscreen in the car for such days 🤣
    • I would agree, unless you need something specific to the HV motor/battery side repaired or investigated, any mechanic will be able to perform normal services, but if you prefer, maybe look for a mechanic who regularly services/repairs Nissans, the VQ engines are pretty common in the Nissan lineup.  Sorry, I can't make any suggestions, I don't live in Vic.
    • Some of them keep working fine. 9 out of 10 of them end up causing an absolute misery bleeding the system and get thrown on the workshop floor in a tantrum and never thought about again because they were never really needed and just added crap to the car that we could have done without. Same-same with HICAS, A-LSD, and various other stupidities that over eager 10x engineers thought we had to have.
