Yes, we all probably know what knock/ping/detonation means....in theory.

But how about some practical real life examples of knowing when knocking is occuring?(without them fancy knock sensors with the graphical cartoons etc etc).

We all know using low octane fuel, crap intercooler running high boost etc etc causes detonation, but other than those obvious reasons how do you guys know if knocking is actually taking place?

By ear? I heard people mention that it's like rattling of marbles in your exhaust etc etc. But I gather by the time it becomes audible(even with the exhaust/wind noise) the knocking would be pretty serious by then? :D

Just wanted to know some opinions/insights you all may have.

cheers.

just imagine a little man inside the engine with a hammer banging on the bores saying "let me out ...let me out NOW!!"...... its a sharp metalic ticking/clicking/banging sound when under load etc or shit fuel, bad cooling, too much timing etc etc......
