After owning the car for a couple of weeks, i noticed that gear 2 was getting rough to shift into and on a couple of mornings i couldnt shift into 2nd until i came to a stop and went 1-2.

Yesterday I explained the problem to re customs (victoria) and they flushed the gearbox oil with a special liquid and filled up with redline

Today in the morning, i let car warm up for 1min and then went onto my street, gear 1 ~ 1500rpm, tried to shift into 2nd and didnt allow me.

Pull over to side of road and start off in 1 and try to 2nd. No luck. Pulled to side of road again and tried once more, this was after 7mins of engine running. Gear 1 then i manage to crunch it through into 2nd. Engine temp was normal during all of this process. Then i just decided to take off on 2nd and avoid all of the 1-2 hassle.

Now for the rest of the day, gear 1 to gear2 goes in but there is still a slight resistance shifting into 2nd. Although much less noticeable after the service.

Is it common for the cold mornings to cause 2nd from not shifting in? Thought the oil change would have fixed the morning problem but doesnt seem to.

Workshop says $300 for syncro's + $800 labour. Should I make this my highest priority before i even think of any mods? ie. instead of finishing off turboback exhaust.

Thanks

The car's getting back at you for putting that awfully big wing on it.

Crunching = synchros are gone. On a cold morning, the gearbox isn't lubricated at all so don't expect it to let you into 2nd.

Don't expect it to get better either. Make it a priority if you don't like the idea of a 4 speed transmission.

It will get better. You only had the oil put in a day ago...so you need to give it time before it starts doing its thing.

Until then, try double clutching into 2nd, and higher revs will help it in as well...

As for taking off in 2nd, you'll be needing a new clutch if you keep that up

yeah mine is a carny to get into second when cold, thought it was something really wrong, crunched it a little the other day :S but never does it when the car has wormed up for about 3 mins.

how much would it cost to fix a synchro?

  • 2 weeks later...

Try when cold working out what RPM will allow it to move from 1st to 2nd easily.. for me it's 2,500 rpm.. anything else and I have to just hold it there till it slots in..

remember, just because your engine is running doesn't mean your gearbox oil will warm up.. takes atleast 5 mins of constant driving before it'll start to warm up..

I also agree with Dezz... let the oil get through.. if after a couple 100km's.. think about rebuilding..
