Engine Developed A Weird Knocking

sound is very much like lifters especially if its gone now it would point to lifters, would of most likely been a lifter that had not pump uped properly change your oil and filter and check the oil that comes out for any sludge or chuncky bits which may be getting caught in your lifters.

little tip get your oil nice and warm before you drop it dont bother doing it cold, take your car for a good drive first.

Sorry to bring back a dead thread, but I have this problem and everyone seems to think its lifters.

What does everyone mean by pumping up the lifters? I know they are hydrolic but I dont know there relationship with the values and cams???

I have changed my oil and filter twise in the last month but the sound is still there when the engine is cold then disapears when it heats up?

Pumping them up refers to pumping them full of oil. What i did was took the lifters out (one side at a time) and soaked them in a bucket of new clean oil. Then replace those and see if the sound has gone away, if it hasnt do the other side.

I have never taken the rocker covers of the rb25 before so dont really know what to expect.

So does the cam run the lifters which open the valves? How does the system come together???

Best to take it to a mechanic if your not sure.

To get the cams out, means removing the rad, harmonic balancer, timing belt etc...

I problery wouldnt worrie about it inless you start getting symptoms of the engine running like crap - shouldnt happen tho.

Even some times pumping up the lifters like shanef explained doesnt always work so the best option would be to get new ones if your that concerned:o

Sorry again for the dead thread thing but,

Do you have to take the cams out to remove the lifters? And how much does a new set of hydrolic lifters set you back?

I was thinking about getting some tomie cams and if you need to take the cams out to change the lifters then it might be a good excuse for the new cams

u certainly do need to remove the cams to get the lifters out.

so basically you remove the cams, grab a magnet and then using the magnet the lifters will just slide on out

another suggestion. have you done ur timing belt yet? caus this would be an excellent time to change it!

Well I guess I will leave the lifters as is, by the sounds of it its only one of the front ones doing it and it goes away when the engine heats up.

If it starts to hang around even when the engine is cold then I will looking into getting cams and new lifters then.

How much are new lifters?

yeh i was talking about hydraulic lifters.

not sure how much new lifters are, give ur local nissan a ring they'll be able to tell you.

oh and one last thing. with that lifter noise, is it coming from one side? or both sides? or does it change from side to side?

its the right hand side if you looking into the engine bay from the front of the car, so I guess the exhaust side. I dont think it changes from side to side... Why do you ask?

I am a little woried about the Zaust value getting stuck closed even when cold as I am getting fuel in my oil atm which is probably due to the excesive missing that I am getting (tune issue) but a lock value could be the cause???

1) I asked because i had the exact same noise from my RB25, but the noise ended up changing sides constantly, and then when i pulled it apart, it turns out it had bent a rod

2) I'm not a mechanic so i don't quite know the answer to that one

3) Again i'm not really sure because i'm not a mechanic

did the bent rod sound go away when the engine heated up?

at first yes, but then it came back, switched between sides, and then got louader and louder

My engine has been making this sound on and off for about a year and goes away when the engine is hot...

Which points to lifters and NOT bent rod
