Did it start as soon as you put the new fuel pump in?

Check the compression on it. Having seen some GTR's with busted rings and low compression, they get really hard to start and you need to stab at the throttle to get it going.

Otherwise might be over/under-fuelling on startup. You can also check fuel pressure while cranking to see if its right.

Yeah I reckon compression too.....as long as the battery is good they start pretty damn well normally. Or put a multimeter over the battery while starting you should still have around 11v while cranking.
