ok toying around with the idea of converting a s chassis car to awd using a skyline as a parts car.

starting with the r32 to the r34, what trimlevels of atessa came in each chassis and how did each system work.

i know that in some cars they had active differentials and others mechanical...

a list or some kind enlightenment would be appreciated.

From my understanding of it all:

The r32 had a slightly different system to the 33 and 34 which i think were the same???(not exactly sure about the), dunnno the exact differences but you can pull the fuse in the 32 and they will run in rwd you can't with the others. What do you mean by trim levels?

The 32 had hydraulicly operated hicas where as 33 and 34 had electrically operated, most people tend to lock this out anyway for a more predictable rear end on the track.

The vspec's had the active lsd, the normals had a loosley setup mechanical one. The vspec's atessa system is also slightly faster and more aggressive somewhere in the region of a reaction time of 1/1000th of a sec instead of the normal 1/100th on non vspec models.

it wont matter so much. the only really viable one (cost wise) would be R32 non-vspec. plus it's nicer to be able to pop fuse and be in RWD. also for a conversion the simplest type the better as less things that can go wrong. A-LSD I would steer clear of for your case too. there is nothing wrong with a plain 2 way mech LSD (standard on 32 GTR).

the only way I would really consider this is buying a wrecked 32 GTR so you have access to ALL the bits.

thanks for the input, i thought the r32 gtr would be the best interms of attempting a conversion as it is the most basic of the 3 production chassis.

however i would be doing this conversion to my s14, so a r33 would be best suited as the r33 and s14 share MANY simmilariaties.

if i were to do this i would have one of my local importers cut a car in half and go from there, that way i have access to everything.

a waste of a gtr? perhaps but we arnt lucky enough to be able to import them and actualy own them here stateside.

I've always heard that but never been able to find out why? I know there are some running around on your streets but they are few and far between. What is the actual reason you can't import them and how have those few got around that?

yes there are a few running round here but it basicaly comes down to improper dot approval.

motorex who was the only registered importer for skylines falsifided test data to get cars into the us, they only crash tested the r33 but not the 34 or 32...this eventualy placed the r32 and r34 on the 'never can be legalized' list and if a car comes in an is seized by customs, say bye bye.

there is alot more to it than just that but it is alengthy story, it honesly involves scandal, crooks and dishonest shops; iirc if you go onto skylinesdownunder in the us section there is a large thread about what happened and why it happened.

there are ways of sneaking a car into the us and getting it registerd but it is tough to do.

hmmm sounds like it comes down to basically gay reasons. So a car has to undergo actual crash testing there before it can be able to be imported? How gay.... Can you import them for track use etc?

Move to canada EH? they have 15 year old rustbucket R32's running around cheap as chips. Not exactly V-Specs, but if you live in the US you can't be picky.

Are you on ZT forums? a bloke in the US recently posted some build pics of his S14 where they had just put the front driveshafts and linkages on an S14 off an R32 GTR.

If its not you, and you aren't on ZT, then I'll see if I can find the pics for you.

as far as i know there hasnt been a complete conversion done in the english speaking world, im sure the japanese shops have done it but no one here stateside that i know of has a _working_ attesa car.

i have seen a s13 coupe converted to a locked awd using a gts-4 drivetrain, but it was constant 50/50...not ideal.

THe guy who's doin the conversion I was talkin about is Geoff Raicer, he's from AZ or NJ. Works for Full Race Motorsports (www.full-race.com). They sucessfully fitted the full R32 GTR front subframe onto the S14 a couple of months ago.

yeah... we're sorta lucky we don't drive on the wrong side of the road like the americans and our local manufacturers don't have a vicegrip on the nuts of governmental policy. That's why I worry when we start making free trade agreements with Bush's regiment and they start introducing bullshit restrictions on us.

You can buy an R32 GTR and have it on the road for about USD 10k these days... and an R33 GTR for about USD 20k... instead of messing around with silvias. We got it good over here.

    • I mean it's a bit late to say "This won't have any tangible effect and it is not worth spending more than about three seconds on it, please just enjoy the car" But I said it anyway. Does the pod actually get any airflow in that position behind a bumper like that?
    • Hey guys - apologies for digging this up. Has this website been shutdown or is the outage temporary?
    • So, went shopping at Just Jap for things that might work for the intake  After some trial fitting there I ended up with a 3" x 45° silicone bend, a 3" x 300mm alloy straight, and a humped joiner, some minor trimming will be required to shorten some of the stuff, but nothing that is beyond my "ham fisted" skills The guy at Just Jap was most helpful as we had all sorts of joiners,  bends and stuff out trial fitting  Laying it out above the stuff in there it seems everything will fit nicely, and looking at it, it is probably the way I should have been looking at doing it from the beginning, probably..... In the end it is a front bar off job anyway to remove the original stuff behind the front bar that is taking up the required realestate needed, so maybe a Thursday or Friday job And because I'm a hopeless consumer, I grabbed some new steel wheel nuts, the current ones are a spline drive type with a "security" socket, that somehow someone keeps misplacing, the new ones are a basic black steel 17mm hex socket In other news: I just did my "final" tax return, I am now officially a old retired veteran pensioner, and I'm milking the system for all it's worth,  life is good
    • I hadn't thought about the variable power steering assist. Presumably, it will always be the same level of assist as you get in an S14. The R32/3/4 are either helliishly heavy (at low speeds) if the solenoid is not powered at all, or hellishly too light (at high speed) if it is powered all the time. I presume that it is PWM controlled on those cars. I hadn't thought about the S cars not having variable assist. ugh. What crappy plebby cars they must be!  
    • Hmm yeah that is a good point. It looks like it'll just bolt in with no real issue besides maybe the bushings being different. My other concern was that 2 pin plug that I assume is used in some way to control the rack solenoid depending on the speed signal from the ecu. The DMAX rack doesn't even have that plug though so, don't think it'll matter. Might just order the rack and see how it goes. Will update this when I figure something out
