Time to get my water pump changed on my r32 gtr. I'm thinking about paying extra and getting the N1 waterpump installed as a good upgrade. However i've been told by a respectable tuner that the N1's would not work very well under normal driving conditions (in traffic, in the middle of an aussie summer with the airconditioning cranked up) and might cause problems. Apparently i've heard that the N1 water pumps only works well under high Rev's for long durations. Can anyone clarify this for me?

Your tuner is right in saying N1 pumps don't flow as much as standard in normal driving conditions. If the revs are higher then the quantity of water pumping through the system is not bottlenecked as the standard one would be moreso.

mines upgraded to n1 and never had issues with overheating when cruisin around under 4000rpm for over 1200km or so. must admit it hasnt been 40 degree weather though so that will be a test. didnt move 1 degree on the dyno for a 4-5 hour tune session with various loads on the engine so it seems to be fine.

Mines N1, never seen the water temp go up over normal, even when thrashing it in really hot weather, also in traffic when i use it as a daily, even with ac on, there's no issues

Some will argue with that, but ive never had a problem with the water temp :(

Thought i'd add this in for future reference incase anyone searches the forums regarding this topic. I've confirmed these few details with a few mechanics who specialize in GTR's:

The real difference between the N1 pumps and standard pumps is the N1 pumps stop cavitation at higher RPM's. One tuner mentioned he had standard GTR water pump on his 680HP GTR without any adverse effects. People with high HP track cars doing endurance runs (holding revs over 5000+ rpms for a good period of time) will see real benefits from a N1 pump. The standard gtr water pump is around AU$189, the N1 is about AU$400. Physically the N1 has a bigger 6 fin arrangement (see pic above) and an extra hole (apparently) the standard GTR pump has a smaller 8 fin arrangement. From my own experience, street driving with the standard pump vs the N1, I've seen no real increase in cooling performance with the N1, its still the almost same as standard. Bear in mind I dont push my car hard at all. I suppose I'll take solice in the fact that if I belt it hard, my water pump wont go :angry:

    • I remember the days when E85 was priced in according to the $ per km outcome. Sure E85 was about 35% cheaper, but you also lost about 35% range... now it's fked..
    • They do. The pale yellow translucent ones from Japan were .... I dunno. Useless? Whiteline and SuperPro are probably fairly similar. There's bound to be a range of different hardnesses amongst the dozens of options on the market. The simple fact is that the pineapples don't get up inside the bush at all. They just sort of exist in the space between the washer/bracket and the subframe's bush outer tube, and...exert a bit of force between them? Or something like that. I'm sure that with enough provocation, they will simply allow one to move wrt the other.
    • I'm not sure they came in different hardnesses? Going from memory only - I had set them up in the balanced setup. I also have poly bushes, so I have both poly bushes and pineapples. This is what my memory tells me at least. I'll have to take a look under there to be sure. The tramp was so bad that I managed to eject/kill a diff bushing, so those I know are stock. The tramp is bad enough that you are 200% sure you are doing severe damage to the car. It's not just chirping or vibration, it feels like you're hitting a speed hump/kerb 10 times a second. The issue has persisted between subframes! (I went from Hicas to non hicas subframe and replaced every bush a few years ago now) so I'm entirely lost. Every arm is factory.
    • Can recommend the Frenchys kit, been using it 2 years now with no issue, very happy with it.  Only thing for me was upgrading the thermo fan but I am super fussy on cooling.   Also interested in electric AC, partly for boot mount to have a clean bay and partly would love the idea of cooling off the car before i get in. The battery setup to do that might be tricky / expensive though.  Found this an interesting watch.    
    • I put Whiteline pineapples in my old 33, they came in a 6 pack of them, got rid of the axle tramp altogether, cheap, quick and easy install,  they were pretty solid units though...???high durometer???? and NVH was increased a fair bit How hard are the ones you installed?
