Morning everyone was just reading a few threads and one was stating that you cant tune a stock ECU so it got me thinking how do you actually tell if its been upgraded? My car when i bought had a new high rise ss manifold and turbo etc ive since done a fair bit of modifying or adding stuff to the motor like most of us do and never had a major problem with the car running its never been on a dyno it reves to about 7500 -8000 im pretty sure as i gave it a bootfull one night but couldnt keep my eye on the tacho due to the speed i was pulling LOL so haw can you tell if its been upgraded? PS ive done all my own work myself because im in the bush and most people around hear would charge an arm and a leg just to pop the bonnet

the only way to tell if it has been remapped for sure is to open it up. then take a pic and post it on here.

ok i could do that ,being a first time owner ,where is it located ? how hard to get to it ?and is it hard to open?

your game without dynoing it lol

well thats the whole idea if i can see if its been upgraded then ill do the 150km trip to the nearest dyno and get a proper tune etc hopefully LOL

ok, well it is located in the kick panel (left hand side) on the passenger side. it is pretty easy to remove it, then to open it is just a few screws. it may even have a sticker on it saying the name of a tuning company.

Some chips don't have anything written on them, mine didn't, but I could do over 8,000 and 180. I ended up with a power fc anyway, better running lots more power and heaps better fuel economy, its a win/win thing.

but i'm gathering by you avatar that you have a r33. this guy has a r32, and the ecu's on them can be remapped much easier.

aside from the sticker if its chipped there should be a "daughter" board gluegunned to the motherboard...

Not on a 32..........

That small board (on the RHS of the ecu) need to be gently unscrewed and moved aside, then take another pic of the bottom board.

raised rev cut is a dead giveaway

when they leave the factory nissan put a warranty sticker over the wiring harness that plugs into the ECU, so you can tell pretty quickly if the ECU has even been unplugged before. A missing sticker doesn't necessarily mean it's been chipped but it's one of the signs..

^ what he said.

Not all rechips have their revlimiter raised. R32 rev limit is 7,500/7,800, my car has a stock ecu and i usually can rev to 8,000rpm without limiter appearing to kick in, so it's sometimes hard to tell

speed limiter is always removed. So see if you can go faster than 180 (on a private road of course...)

    • Which manifold mate? Meanwhile......Mark is wondering how bonnet vents would look on the NC 🤣
    • Actually,  just remembered there should be info in the threads (somewhere) about swapping to a manual steering rack and deleting power steering all together.
    • Also had a look at the Nissan JP website looks like the 400r has a slightly shorter ratio than than the regular V37 3.133 VS 2.937 which from a guy who has driven both 3.69 vs 4.11 ratios in the S15 is bugger all. Seems that the AUTO Z runs the same ratio as the 400R but can't find any info as to if its an open or LSD? More often than not the auto LSD is open
    • Do not replace the power steering lines with this stuff. If it's anything like the Chase Bays stuff it will leak and be worse than stock. The reason why the reservoir is on the LH/passenger side of the car is because that's just where the reservoir was most convenient to fit. Don't overthink this stuff. The intake/cold side of the engine is pretty busy on these cars. And again, the hardpipe is designed to be a janky power steering cooler. In theory you can replace it with a real power steering cooler but that's really only for track use where boiling the fluid is a distinct possibility. Start with the low pressure lines feeding the pump from the reservoir. Make sure there isn't a bunch of junk in the reservoir filter. Be careful to not get ATF all over the engine bay. I hate dealing with ATF spills, you can clean it up and the slightest crevice will still release more oil that can still drip over time. You also want to inspect for leaks before you make a mess and can't tell what happened. Most likely you have a leak somewhere that is allowing fluid out and air in. Failing that it's allowing air in but not fluid out. Only place I can really see that happening is on the low pressure side because the pump will pull a slight vacuum to draw fluid in. Everything after the pump is high pressure or lower pressure, approaching atmospheric by the time it returns to the reservoir.
    • I did a skidpan night at SMSP this week, it was much cheaper than $350. But yeah, you need to slap an LSD in that thing.  I put an OS Giken in the 370Z and it's f**king MARVELOUS even compared to Nissan's viscous LSD. So you're saying it's free now that it's a housing estate? 😂
