I am sure a lot of you may already know this, but for the benefit of anyone who doesn't (I didn't till yesterday):

As Skylines have batteries in the boot, they must either be a sealed battery or have an external vent out of the car. Apparently if you get a power surge the battery vents producing a highly flamable gas.

I got a new battery yesterday and the guy in the battery shop was shocked that my car had an unsealed battery and no external vent! He said it is highly illegal. I have also spoken to someone else with a skyline (eliteR33) who told me that it has become one of the things the Police are cracking down on imports.

I am fairly sure if you have a sealed battery it will say sealed on it. If in doubt I suggest you get someone who knows the difference to check it out.

The benefit, my new battery is maintainance free, so I don't have to pull it out to check the water all the time!

Must be one of the minority with the battery in the back.

Funny that the NRMA guy new exactly where to go when the lights had been left on. (She did it)

As far as I know they all reside there and should be sealed for safety.

Sealed batteries don't have the screw caps for topping up (about six of them) across the top of the battery.

hehe red you prolly mean every r32 you have seen

r33 got no space under the bonnet for it

there is a fuse box and a boosting point with a + and - on it, might have confused it for a battery

but r33 is in the boot. unless someone felt the need to unbalance the car and stick the battery back under the bonnet

Yepp. R32's have them under the bonnet, while the R33's have them in the boot cause there is just too much HP power under the bonnet :)

James, glad you told me cause I'll be in the market for a new battery soon. The one that's in mine now goes flat if I leave the radio running for more than about 30mins :)

So far I've charged it 3 times in the last 2 years cause it wouldn't start the car.....

What size/type/CA did you end up getting? I had a look at mine and I think I'll have to change the terminal connectors to larger ones if I go with a bigger battery.

And I've still got the vent pipe thingy that can connect to a unsealed battery. I suppose I'd need to get one that the pipe connects to if I go with an unsealed battery ???

hay guys this is what i was talking about ages ago my 180sx which is comming down has the battary in the boot which means the guys told me i need sealed battary in a battary box or either make a vent for it which i dont want to do? can you get sealed battarys ????> the ones which i was told that dont reluse flamable fumes are the dry sell? the odessay ones which cost like 300 buckz and weigh 50 kilo but apprently last for ages =)

is there anything else which might be cheaper =)

I fitted an Odyssey battery to my R33 for the leakage reason (no fluid, totally sealed), plus they are light and have excellent cranking current.

They arent the cheapest though, and you can get 'sealed' batteries that use paste rather than fluid and have a safety vent for excess gas much cheaper - call your local battery specialist and ask about paste based sealed batteries for inside cars.

I got a 100% sealed battery, maintainance free, which cost me $130.

Jay, I'll check size etc. for you. I just went to the battery factory in Fyshwick and they changed the terminal connectors to larger ones for me. I needed a new battery because after 5 mins of stereo the car wouldn't start!

Cool - that's not such a bad price.

Yeah, mine is crap too. The thing in my car is only about a hand span across !! Damn small... :P

The factory R33 battery is a POS! It's rated @ 270CCA - that's pretty average for a modern fuel injected car with all the mod cons.

I started by replacing my stock battery with an Odyssey ES12V800 (~$300) 400CCA (800A start pulse) boot mounted battery isolator & new quality cabling.

The Odyssey died in less than 6mths! Yep my Odyssey dropped a cell in 5 or so mths. I tested it, 2 battery specialists tested it & then finally an Odyssey rep came down from Sydney (as he believed it was me that had caused its failure) I asked him to explain just how I had caused its failure? I even offered to allow him to go over my cars elec'/charging system, my battery isolator s/w & cabling, even run tests for alternator charging voltage, reg serviceability etc. The end result? The Odyssey rep didn’t even have the decency to apologise to me when it was proven to be a dud battery! I got my money back. Stuffed if I wanted another Odyssey if that’s how they treat an honest customer!

I did nothing more than buy & fit the Odyssey battery. It was installed correctly & was never called upon to do anything more than is claimed it can (deep cycle etc.) I work in the aviation electrical field so I know a bit about batteries.

I’ve had an Optima Yellow Top fitted for mths now. Bloody awesome battery! Rated @ 650CCA. Deep cycle, the works! The starter motor doesn’t know what’s hit it when you crank the engine! It’s certainly not cheap ($400+) It’s big (only just fitted in the battery tray – with a bit of massaging) but it lives up to the claims of it manufacturer (unlike the Odyssey).

whatsisname: Yeah I want to get an Optima next time round. I have heard a lot of good things about them! Just need the $$$ to spend on a battery!

Jay: The battery I got is an "AcDelco Sealed Maintenance Free" (430CCA, 45AH, 80RC)
