The latest issue of Famitsu has an interview with Kazunori Yamauchi for the new Gran Turismo on PS3.

+ They'll release 2 versions for the new Gran Turismo (they use the same "Gran Turismo HD" name of the E3 demo for the product names) for the PS3 soon. Both support online multiplayer.

+ The proper GT5 is going to hit in 2008. GT HD is meant to grow the rich network service before GT5. The online modes are based on the 4 modes in GT4nline beta (Quick Race/Tuned Race/Private Race/Time Attack) and several other modes are added. The online will be launched worldwide at the same time.

+ Gran Turismo HD: Premium is essentially a GT5 prologue that uses the full graphics power of the PS3. (Pictures show a 3D spectator crowd, very detailed car models with interiors.) The weather changes while racing. It comes with 2 courses (both original and new, city and nature) and 30 cars including new ones. You can buy additional 30 cars and 2 courses (real circuits) later online. This version (or both GT HD, not sure) is a pure driving simulator and almost a tool. You don't get cars in in-game events, you just do whatever you want with games and courses or buy new ones via online.

+ Gran Turismo HD: Classic is what adopts the GT:HD playable demo at E3 and meant to showcase the online aspect. A race is done with about 20 cars. Apparently this version starts with no cars or courses. You download a car for 50 - 100 yen (0.43 - 0.85$) and a course for 200 - 500 yen (1.71 - 4.26$). Over 750 cars and 50 tracks are available for purchase. Users can define race events freely and can hold online race events by themselves.

+ Not all cars and courses are available on the release date, they are added monthly. Some models may be a limited release for 1000 units. New playing modes and tuning parts may be available via download. It's still undecided if they allow trade among users in fear of real money trade.

I think the paying for stuff is abit gay, but online will be awsome. I hope the AI arn't retarted anymore (we can all dream). And Ferrari is finnaly in  i've been waiting for that for years.

just got hold of the driving force pro wheel and got out gt4 again. so much better with the wheel. i can't believe it. so realistic. now i'm hooked again. can't wait for gt5, mmmmmmm.

Ferrari is an added bonus, now can they please get porsche. i like ruf but i want licensed porsche aswell. what do you think? anything else you want in the new game?

DAMAGE!!!!!!! is it finally here. one key area that was lacking in my opinion.

best driving game ever. i'd like to think so.

I thought there was a big issue with the whole damage thing as some of the car makers didn't want their cars getting smashed up in a game.

So as soon as one says no then its no to damage period.

I think this is something that everyone has been longing in the GT series but personally i don't care if they do or don't bring it in.

they'd have to buy the license off EA games. they bought it years ago for the porche challenge games, and have kept it exclusive ever since.

damage was left out because GT is 'a real driving simulator'. Kazanori said if he included damage then even the slightest tap can render the car useless for the rest of the race. would be nice to see stuff like engine blowing and having to buy new engines...

just one of my improvement ideas.

    • Thx for the reassuring reply. I’ve got above legal clearance  going in for roadworthy Friday… fingers crossed it’s keeping me awake  bloody nanny state
    • I was actually going to try and dig out a datalog with turbine speed and EMAP haha
    • Wait until @Lithium posts a compressor map and tries to explain what's going on. There is a strong possibility that the OP lives in a digital world and is not comfortable with analogue machines. A turbo is just about as analogue as it gets, with plenty of non-linear behaviours added in on top. Most of us who think we know how they work are actually only getting by on 2nd and 3rd order mental models that abstract away from the actual physics and bring it back to the sort of kindergarten level concepts we can hold in our heads. This is important when you need to hold 10 such concepts in your head at the same time. You need to reduce the complexity of the individual concepts to allow them to be simultaneously held and manipulated. Too much complexity in the base models makes it very difficult to make them work with each other mentally.
    • It could be. It might not be. It is impossible to know without context by asking the owner or the tuner on the day and knowing what they were doing/not doing/attempting to do. You said earlier this is hard to understand because to your mind, a turbo is at full speed when it hits its spike. This is not true. The turbos actual speed is defined by how much air is being forced through it via the exhaust, unless you control it. The spike you are seeing at ~whatever RPM it 'spools' at, is where boost control is starting. If there were no boost control the turbo absolutely would be spinning much faster at 7000rpm than 3000rpm, every single time, on every single engine. Boost control keeps the boost controlled within the limits you ideally want. If it were uncontrolled you would have two scenarios 1) You have a turbo that hits peak RPM and CFM (not boost) at the redline of the engine. This would work, but most people want more boost earlier. 2) You have a turbo that hits peak RPM well before the redline of the engine (say, 3500), and you explode the turbo by redlining the engine. (say, 7000rpm). If you don't want exploding things, or lag, you design a turbo system to come on when you want the boost to be useful, and then not overspin itself into oblivion by using some form of boost control, to control the boost pressure accordingly.
