One of these magazines should do an article on discrimination against women in the auto industry.. I'm so sick of it..

I get treated a little rudely at times and like I'm an idiot until I prove I know what I'm talking about.. by mechanics who don't have a clue about imports and pleb sales guys particularly... and goddamn I hate it when someone tells me I'm after something completely different or gives me the wrong info and there's just no possibility that they could be wrong as opposed to the stupid 'wouldnt have a clue' chick in front of them... until they ask a workmate and he confirms I'm right..

Its the same as all the guys getting treated like hoons just because they own a skyline, just caus I look like a stupid bint doesn't mean I am one! (at least when it comes to car sh1te anyway)

Do you girls get the same treatment?

yeah thats a given, you have to become 'friends' with them and be a regular customer for them to start treating you like a normal person that pays normal $$... or flinging words around helps... just ranting on about the car makes them think twice when they quote you. Even "aftermarket" & "stock" is usually a good start.. I know that it must be a simple defining difference between car person and pleb, because my non car friends look at me blankly when I mention 'stock turbo' etc. lol.

I think all chicks should be treated like they know whats under the bonnet until they say "oh hee hee hee you lost me at coolant..."

But no, I have to prove myself to save a $ and my sanity..

whoops starting to hijack your thread, sorry Joel! Keeping it at the top tho!!

My 2 cents...

I've never had a problem with any workshop or even Nissan dealer regarding the maitenence of my car. I have taken my car to a fair few different workshops before. Not once have I been treated like a 'silly' female or discriminated against in anyway.

Having said that I would never take my car to a shop that doesn't have a recommendation from someone I know, in my opinion that would just be a frustrating experience because you a) can be overcharged and b) also don't know the person working on your car and that could be detrimental to the services they are providing.

I also do some of the work to it myself. A lot of shops love that I like to learn and let me use their hoists etc for cheap but other shops I will just leave my car there to work on. Depending on what needs to be done. If its a basic service I just do it myself. If its something big its a must to take it to a good reccomended shop and you get what you pay for with things like tuning etc....

If you know how much other people have paid for a similar job ask for an estimate of what they will charge you. Then always ask that if it is going to be more $$ than quoted, they have to call and check with you before they do the work.

Having said that every female friend I have has been majorly ripped off by mechanics before, if you don't set guidlines they will rip you off and also if you don't know what you 'should be' charged roughly than its easy to get ripped off to, get more than one quote if you need to and ask around before going to any workshops about their credibility.

Its not just females that get ripped off with dodgy workshops, there are plenty of guys that would get ripped off as well. And then theres the old "This guy tuned my car for really cheap and its running XXXrwkw's now, it's so quick......" and two weeks later the engine blows up!!

my girlfriend got some of that "stupid girl" stuff at JB hifi, i know the guys there (archie anyway) and was quoted and been accepted an exchange for speakers. My girlfriend went in the next week to get everything done etc, whatever i organised, another guy there was treating her and her sister like bimbos and that they didnt know anything (they dont really but they were going off what i told them) after i spoke to the guy who was treating them like that, he later apologized and said he was wrong and he lost a customer.

i also deal with alot of girls at work who come in with problems and its so easy to stooge them. Like "my car vibrates at speeds over 80km/h" (wheels out of balance) i can easily say its a wheel allignment and balance ~ 100 or so $$ which other service advisers do that to them, i say no its just your tyres are out of balance and it wont be much. "how much?" i say under 20bux.

I've copped a fair amount of shit from workshops / panel beaters and just random dicks who work at autobarn.

When I first got my skyline I took it to a very well known and respected workshop among this club, I was prepared to pay a bit more for a good job, everything was fine at the start but when I got my car back I started having problems anyway cut a long story short the owner didn't want to have anything to do with me when I told them what was wrong so I had to get my brother to ring up for me so the mechanic would actually take him seriously. Got my money back etc but I'm just dissapointed with the way I was treated cause I would've kept on going back there.

Same deal when I've gone to autobarn a few times, just to get some coolant and parts for a service etc. I told the guy I was FINE and didn't need any help. He proceeded to hang around the whole time and try and tell me that I didnt need certain stuff he was rude and acted like I didn't know anything cause i'm a chick.. I left the shop ready to smash skulls. I was soooo angry!

I've found a good workshop now, where my mechanic doesnt act any different cause I'm a chick, he's polite and does a good job. Its just a pain cause its so far out of my way.

I guess this stuff wont ever change, there are always going to be small minded people around male or female.
