I would have thought based on metallurgy alone that a forged rod would be stronger then a billet rod. Forgings typically have better greain structures then a machined billet.

You have to remember that the grain structures and flow change during the forging process.

You want your grain structure to resemble the final shape. Not all unfiorm as its easier for stress/crack propogation.

Think about a piece of 4x2" wood. Its easy to split down the length of it with the grain...damn hard to split accross it as it has to all splinter.

Isnt it the same thing?
