benm, the camera is only a little B&W CCD model, which I bought because it wasn't too expensive and would allow me to pilot the idea of mounting external cameras and mics. Re sound, I have already trialled mics in the engine bay and it's pretty good. I need to build a preamp before I can get the sound and video working together. Once I've done that I'll be choosing a colour camera.

Tex and I had been musing about it for a few weeks (ie "wouldn't it be cool if...") and then I thought hell let's try it, bought what I needed on a friday afternoon and made up the cables. Turned up 20mins late to dinner with a bit of a smirk until I spilled the beans and said I had onboard video and we tested it that night, then I brought it with me on the hunter cruise the next day. So it's very much a prototype :)

Expected final Costs ?

I believe the prototype was really cheap as chips, though Kinks will be able to tell you more.

No, the real deal is for us. :)

It's going to be quite a bit more expensive, because it's going to be a hell of a lot more elaborate. The camera alone will cost much more than the one Geoff used here... And the ideas I'm particularly keen on trying will call for a fair bit more hardware.

We've not really got a shopping list together, but I'm sure soon we will. :)

Re: sound, we have not only trialled mics in the engine bay with great success now (you will hear an example in my upcoming Hunter vids), but also at the rear bumper, above the exhaust. So far, things look very promising. :)

As Big Kev would say, I'M EXCITED!

Tex

The CCD I used was $110 retail, and I'll be looking at spending several times that amount just on the camera when this idea gets going.

As Tex says the real deal is for us. It's custom work, and will be a lot more elaborate eventually.

Yeah, yeah, Carlo tells me I'm very close to having heaps of hard disk space (I'm waiting for him to give me the hard drives I need, but he's a busy man :D).  As soon as that's sorted, I'll be editing like a mofo, for your viewing pleasure!

Will most likely update this thread with them, if Geoff doesn't mind. :(

Oh, and Mona, there's plenty more where that came from... ;)

uh oh!!!

Sweet .... Where's your footage Tex ?

In my pants. Why do you ask?

Seriously though, it currently resides on my camera, awaiting processing. :D As I said before, I am waiting to sort out some HDD space issues, so I can get cracking. Once the HDDs are installed and working correctly, I will now be able to edit pure DV format footage, instead of the other way I've been doing it 'til now, which involves importing in preview quality, editing, and then rendering the vid, at which point the footage all needs to be captured again, in full DV quality to be made in to the MPEG. Then it needs to be converted to DivX to bring the file size down to a more acceptable size.

It's time consuming! At least this way I'll cut one step out of the process, which should cut the total time spent waiting for the computer to capture vid by half.

Tex

DO you think it will be able to be mounted for things like track days etc? Would those speeds risk the camera falling off the outside of the car? This sounds like we are in for some awesome footage on upcoming events!
