I'm looking at buying a Greddy water temp gauge (white face) and I'm not sure if it's mech or elec. I asked if you have to run a water line through the car and the guy said yes. Then I said I didnt want that, I was after an electric one. Then he said its a line to the hose so it tells temp no water goes through it. He said its like copper wire to the hose to tell the temp.

is that how they work? Will I just go and have a look at it and make sure it has a sender? What else should I look for to make sure its not mech?

Also, how much would you pay for it? He's asking $140 but I'll talk him down a bit (he always over prices). It looks like a new-ish one, looks pretty nice and was working fine when he took me for a drive in his car (its out of a car I was looking at buying).

It was in a 180SX with an Rb20DET.

Thanks.

i have a greddy water temp gauge.. electric one tho.. the sensor is placed int he top radiator hose in a greddy adapter.. no water lines have to run inside.. ive never seen a gauge that has a "water" line run intside to determin water temp.. i have seen oil pressure gauges which has a teflon line that runs to the back of them.. but well yer never seen a water temp guage that has a water line running inside :ninja:

Here's a link to one of the Greddy temp installation manuals for an electrical gauge. You can see it has a sensor which feeds behind the standard water temp sensor, no fluids run through it.
