yer there are heaps of different opinions here and what i have been told. Their either really good or really bad, [reliable]. With things breaking and stuff. But my dad if he is buying somethink he always spends the extra to get the better which in this case probably the tegra type R sounds the best buy. Sporty, 2 door, nice looking shape, Fast etc but then i gotta pay dad back half of what the car was bought for. Anyone owned a tuned vtech engine and loved to go hard let us no if u had many problems? and the life span before anouther thing went wrong? Also how much that set u back with cash to fix the prob :/

im glad u love ur car, but all i was saying is that if this guy wants sumthin thats gonna be fast, a n/a 32 is prolly not the best avenue wen he can get a type R teg that nails 0-100 in about 6 sec stock. and weighs under 1100kg. also one of the best fwd drive handlers.

the rb20det lacks torque, so a N/A 32 would not be the wise decision if this kid wants sumthin that can move swiftly. i reckon he'd prolly just end up regretting it.

and bogeye, i seriously think ud be better off jumping on preludeaustralia to find out about tuned vtec's and their potenial. im a member on preludeaustralia and thers threads with dyno sheets and heaps of useful info for u. great group of members on ther who will help u out.

Im my experiance, Honda's are pretty unreliable after the 7 year mark.

My girlfriend has an intega, in the last 3 years she's snapped a timing belt (at just the right moment when everything was in balance! Ultra lucky) dead air cooling compressor, the brake master cylinder, the window motors, the sunroof switches and it constantly had a problem starting where it just wouldn't do anything. A light came on and nothing happened when you turned the key.

By contrast, for the same cash (say 10K) you're best cash would be spent on a toyota, or even a Falcon or commie (eeek).

Personally, I'd go the S13. They look slick, are a little different, and are a great car to learn advanced driving techniques in.

hondas have to be maintained thats all. timing belts, brake master cylinders, servicing...all stuff that has to be taken care of and ull be right. i would def not call Hondas unreliable, just gota take care of them.

we've had 4 hondas in our family. all great cars, just gota keep an eye on things like timing belts and oil changes.

i suppose its a matter of opinion

but i can tell u that honda has excellent reliability....just look on carsales, some 89model civics still goin strong...some over 300,000kmz

i work for them and they are the most reliable cars u can get...

my mate works for honda, who used to work for toyota and says toyota is years ahead of honda as far as reliability is concerned....

if ur worried bout that shit happening then maybe look at a r31 skyline

i no that every man and his dog has got one, but because there soooo many of them parts are cheap (ish)

theres help on this forum, torque rb30 is fun (esp if u can find manual), and if u do break a timing belt, so what, the valves wont smash into the pistons (reputadly anyway, somebody on here will surely have come across it and shoot me down).

and if u do want to do a bit of drifting, get a second diff centre, sink a few sticks of weld into it and voila, locked diff and flop drift drifting

but if a r31 is not ur thing, then the 'teg is deff the way to go, look ultra sleek, go like rockets, what else would u want?

Yeah go 31 for a good cheap rwd nissan with nice torque and decent power. If you don't like the look of them then that's your loss... they're a great first car to learn the ins and outs of and I can't think of anything else that gives you what a 31 can for the price.

Im so sick of everyone sayin that GTS skylines are slow. Ok the Rb20e and de ones would be.

But the 33's got rb25de in em, plus if you get a late model one you can get em with vvt. look around for a Type S so you get the LSD... as i did.

Raced my mates Superchanged VT como 97 mod. And he only beat me by about 2 meters. They are pritty fast cars once you get out of 1st gear becasue the gearing is so short with the 4.3 diff.

If you want a Nissan man. and you cant get a Turbo car..... go a S13 or a R33 late mod one with VVT. you will love it man.........

Also cause i cant get a turbo, i still wanted a nice looking car but when i wanna go fast if i can. Thats when i started looking into the vtech in honda's cause i would be able to use them, a properly turned vtech can run a 13-14's.

Probably true, but completely irrelevant.

The law states that you can't do any powertrain mods to the car either. So it doesn't matter what a "properly turned vtech" will do, since legality apparently is an issue for you it doesn't matter. You'll get your butt kicked just as much in a Type-R with an exhaust as you will in a dead stock R32 GTS-t.

A stock Type-R cuts a low-to-mid 15 quarter. Which is about as quick as a P-plater legal car you're going to be able to get, unless you can afford an Elise or are willing to put up with a kit car like a PRB. The Type-R has always been about making up time in the corners, not in the straights.

And stealth mods on a Type-R are pretty useless. Doing the internals will cost you a fortune (especially on the B18 since its already tuned to within an inch of its life) and doing an exhaust will be obvious. You can go weight reduction by replacing most of the exterior panels with thin fibreglass or carbon, and changing the final drive, but none of that is cheap.

That depends on whether you think high 15 second quarters are slow or not, when most R33 turbo guys are at least 2 seconds faster.

To the poster, i'd go for a small light car in your situation. Civic VTiR or some such. It will be awesome fun to throw around and you can get into big heavy powerful Skylines later...

In a world where a standard 6 cylinder family car can run a low 15 second pass, suddenly a sports coupe like the R33 GTS doesn't look so quick anymore. By today's standards I don't consider my (stock) R32 GTS-T to be particularly quick either - I'm outgunned (in the power stakes at least) by pretty much anything on the market with a modern 6-cylinder engine.

Have to say rotaries rock. But to be quick in a newish one it has to be turbo (aside from RX8 which is too pricy).

Hondas unreliable? My parent's had one and in 180,000kms not one single thing went wrong, same as everyone I know that has had a Honda (3 people). But like any car things can go pear shaped.

i had a 95 model civic non vtech with 210,00 on the clock, used to go o.k, honda's are reliable end of story, how many times you heard of a honda engine blowing? never... toyota's are strong also, personaly i would jst get a n/a powerd rwd nissan, be it skyline,180,s13, then get hold of the turbo motor for it and build it up, got a mate who these laws aplied to, bought a onevia and sold his turbo motor.... if your gona get n/a power then its gota be light weight car, best example toyota sprinter :), excelent drift car and still goes hard with n/a moter.. just my 10cents

Powertrain - parts of the car that affect the power output.

Have a look at the P1 and P2 license conditions, specifically:

Prohibited vehicles are those with:

Engine performance modifications

So anything that affects the way the engine performs is not allowed. Doesn't matter if its a catback exhaust, VTEC controller, air intake filter....anything that affects the engine's power output can't be touched.

So the only way of making the car go faster than stock (in a straight line) is to work the other side of the power to weight ratio. Or play with gearing.

Or you could learn to drive properly and attack those corners like a mofo to make up for your dearth of power....of course there's a chance you will crash doing so, rendering the stupid restrictions irrelevant.

But, kamikaze-cornering-style, supa-late-braking-technique, is what Hondas are all about.

On a lowish budget, I'd look at:

EK Civic VTiR

Nissan Pulsar SSS

Proton Satri GTi

If you can afford it, the RenaultSport Clio is one of the most enjoyable cars I've ever driven. Definitely so for the cost. Its so very chuckable. The engine is torquey and willing to rev to the limiter, and in such a light car it just pulls and pulls.
