Its not a voltage problem for many reasons...

1) If voltage was dropping the fuel pump would slow down so it would be leaning out at 5000rpm not richening up

2) If voltage was dropping and causing your ignition system problem, it would be misfiring and you would definately feel/hear this

The trial ECU means its been modified to certain paramters (probably to suit the stock setup) that would be useless for how your car is now setup. 99% of the time these Japanese modified ecu's use an epoxied eeprom meaning you cant retune it (its possibly even why it needed an engine rebuild as the Japanese are renowned for cranking up the ignition timing which doesnt work to well with our fuel).

Get a Power FC and I will bet money on it that with a decent tune your problems will be solved. If you spent $12k on the engine, you really shouldnt be stinging on other areas, its dangerous.

Well I've just been for a ride in it, it seems to me that it's a heat and load related missfire

the miss is always there at around 5,000 revs, but it seems to occur earlier in the revs when the engine gets more heat into it. It doesn't miss badly enough to halt the engine from revving any harder, it's also not a fixed miss in that it occurs constantly above where it starts - it doesn't. It carries on and farts a little bit, I actually had to almost have my head out the window to hear it. Doesn't really backfire at all when you back off, no more than I've ever seen out of any other RB anyway

It revs absolutely fine when sitting there in neutral.

I couldn't hear any pinging at all or other mechanical noises, it idles really smoothly, doesn't miss at all at idle.

I dunno to me it seems like it's a stuffed set of coils or the ignitor box but then how come it's only done it since the engine was rebuilt..... perhaps it's something like the crank angle sensor isn't quite set to where it should be and is messing with the timing? (Would that cause something like this?)

Heard of a lot of ignitors shittin themselves after an engine rebuild and performance tune. Especially the 100,000 kms mark seems to show the RB26 issues. However this seems it's hit a limitation @ 5000 rpm.

In the tune, cams dialled in properly?, coils. From what you say Mark it happens under load. I'd have to agree with you from my limited knowledge.

Anything blocking the airflow ?

What are the mods to this beast?

Mine was tuned not to exceed 5500rpm after the rebuild to run in.

i had a very similar prob with my r32 gts-t turned out to be a fauly ignigter coil. prob was it was hard to find because it was very intermitant. ed at integra even tested the coils wile i was there and couldnt find the prob. but when i took it to nissan in philip they found it was a fulty coil. so got a new one and it's been running sweet ever since.

That’s not a nice thing to say considering that Ed has done allot of work on allot of the skylines that are in Canberra. Ed's a really nice guy and I have never had any probs with his work, as I stated when he tested my igniter coil I was standing right there as he tested it. It was intermittent so it was not his fault. As a technician I know how hard diagnoses can be some times and I usually find that the people out there who boast that they know the most normally know the least. And even if they know what there talking about the work is usually shonky as hell.

Without looking at the car we can only speculate as there are a number of thing s it could be. If you are running aftermarket turbos with an untuned (to your particular car setup then this could be the problem)a trial one is only going to be fine if your engine and turbo setup are the same as what it was originally mapped for. I would be checking the basics first fuel press,boost press, ignition timing at the revs you are talking about also make sure he has connected the ecu earth points correctly, check all coil packs as you can have a slight missfire which will not necessarily give you a seat of the pants miss but can limit revs.Amaru is correct they do not have a boost cut only speed cut. If your computer isn't mapped to your setup then on boost the AFM will not be sending the correct voltage and can adjust timing and fuel corrections dramatically.Also check for simple things like blocked Cat or muffler.

Come on guys, we should be supporting local business, mechanics is not an exact science as there are a number of possibilities for any one problem it is just a matter of process of elimination. Every mechanic would have made a mistake in their time and anyone who says they haven't is bullsh**ting. Being qualified myself, working for an import yard,performance shop,Qantas as an Engineer and doing all my own work on these cars i speak from experience. These cars are up there with the best of them on technology and gadgets and anyone who has had to use the workshop manual and wiring diagram on one (Translated Japanese) will understand how hard it is to diagnose some of these problems.

It is like anything if you have come accross a problem for the first time it takes ages to find but the second time round not a problem.

Give these guys a go, if you have a problem with something they have done let em know and i'm sure they will sort it. It's the only way we learn.

    • Nah. There's not shit tonnes of pressure in there. Just drill with a 1.5mm drill or something equally tiny. When the drill goes all the way through thee gas will start to come out, but with such tiny path through the flutes of the drill bit, it won't be at all dangerous. You can be as paranoid as you like from then on. I'd just pull the drill out while keeping my face out of the line of fire. But then, I spend half my time looking into pressurised furnaces. So my risk acceptance is somewhat higher than most!
    • Been needing a new clutch for a while, but holding off because of life tingz and adulting. But... Being of Asian descent, I can't pass on a good sale, especially everyone else is selling it for $2k+ (JJR has it for $1799). Really on the fence on this one, because the unsprung version of this is $1281 via Shitbox (Sparesbox) and the sprung version is quite a bit more (no idea why Shitbox doesn't offer them). Ending up just sending it and getting the twin sprung organic. Mainly because I wanted the car to be nice to drive and didn't want to make it more of a shitbox than it already is.

    • yep just a JIC vs ISO insulator height. old coils are for JIC, new coils are for ISO
    • no just don't want the one I have atm. It's too stock and pristine to mod. Wanna buy a 0.34 Skyline that I can put the remaining 0.66 skyline parts on to make 1 skyline.
