I have a week off work and not much to do as the GF is working every day im off.

This has resulted in me deciding that I need to go for a drive to find some good roads. Im located in maryborough but am planning to drive down the bruce highway then find a more interesting way back up through maleny etc, but im not real sure on where im going.

Anyone got any good places I should go and any I should avoid.

Thanks,

Tim.

The roads around Maleny and Montville are very nice. If you come a bit further south you could do the Mt Mee/ Dayboro Road. Awesome views and a great drive.

So, Tim, a week off work and you are based in Maryborough?? Not working at the Correctional Centre by any chance?? If so, then you know some of my mates who work there.

I think I will go buy a good old fasioned paper map tomorrow and figure it out from there.

Just dont really want to get too far south I guess, only a one off day trip, and i have no doubt I will use a lot of fuel as is :P

As for working at the correctional centre, nope that would not be me. I work in a much more sterile (and probably boring) environment.

Excellent, that will be one to mark out into my travels somewhere. Going to go buy a map now.

Is it fairly quiet out that way during the week? Im not into anything overly stupid, just feel that suburban driving surely wasnt what the skyline was designed for, poor thing might only go above 3000rpm once or twice a week. Only really drive it maybe 100km a week also.

if you haven't already bought a map, the dept of main roads has some pretty good downloadable maps that we use for the GTR cruises.

there's a nice loop out from Malaney to Kenillworth and back into Mapleton via the Obi Obi road. That's a very nice peice of road - especially back up the range on the Obi Obi road.

Dept of Main Roads Maps

there is a good road from the bp servo at forest glen up to buderim. its got some bends. also just west of gympie there is some good roads. very winding, but also very unforgiving. 2 lanes but very little shoulder. steep drop 1 side, step bank on the other.

otherwise take a drive out to borumba damn. the road out is pretty fun.

at the top of Peachester rd there is another road called Bald Knob Rd. pretty tight and large trees close to the side but a fun road to run on.

Also Palmwoods - Montville Road, pretty tight at the top, road is also narrow and rough but its sealed good bit of tarmac to run on, just dont' cook the brakes.

the GTR Cruise 2 went out through this area. I think we had some pretty good roads in that, if I do say so myself ;) (I set the roads) I'll PM you the file with the route instructions if you like. If you start with the Peachester Rd from Beerwah you will join up with the route we used when you come to the T intersection at the end of that road.

rofl mons rd, buderim is gay, lasts like 2 minutes, and always has traffic on it.

plus its still suburban area, go to the hinterland go up through nambour upto mapleton then take the obi obi rd then come back out through landsborough past Australian Zoo. that will be your best bet.

anyway man have fun.

rofl I remember back in the school days Hiking our pushies up Somerset dr just so we could ride down mons with no brakes :O ... Thems the days. But yeah not really worth going out of your way for..

Peachester road is still the hot shit. Abundance of cat-eyes is the only downfall

Also there is a back route from landsborough through to Beerwah wich is alright... Don't know the name of it but if you turn of into the main road entering Landsborough, keep on that road for a kay or 2 and turn left at the round about.. This eventually connects with peachester road. :sorcerer:

Well i did it today.

Woke up and the weather was miserable but pushed on anyway. Most the roads were quite dry.

Started off going from nambour up to montville which was fairly rough, thin and unmarked and I was stuck behind a slow commodore doing 30-40 the whole way. Very little traffic though so it wasnt bad. After that went back down to landsborough and beerwah and up the road to peachester. This was dry and yep it does make you grin. Good fun.

Followed that through to maleny, where we stopped for lunch. Had to keep an eye on the skyline in that town with some of the inhabitants. From there it was through to montville and mapleton. I think that road was quite flowing and unremarkable. Then we did the mapleton to kenilworth road through obi obi. The dirt was a bit slow going, but that road was good, little traffic and leninent speed limit.

From kenilworth it was up to gympie which is an ok stretch for the first half, 100km/h zone, but a little rough. Nice and wide though. A few tight corners, bit odd coming into a corner at 100km/h (legally) with a 20 or 40 advisory sign.

All in all a good day. Skyline went alright, was glad it was stock power with the sometimes damp road, being able to go foot down in 2nd without breaking traction wasnt something i wasnt used to!

Now to plan my next trip to brisbane, the back way all the way  Whats the mt. mee road like?

that's why its better to go up the Obi Obi road the other direction - there's no dirt on the way up and its a nice hill climb. I guess I should have mentioned that... :) but I didn't know you were going to go the other way... and the Malaney-Kenillworth Rd you missed out on is a good one too - particularly when you get to the Kenillworth State Forest - some beautiful wide, smooth, cambered corners.

anyway, Mt Mee is okay, particularly the climb up from Woodford side where you will be coming from. some of the roads along the top are a bit dull, but there's a few of nice, heavily cambered corners on the Dayboro side to look forward to. Can be a little rough in places too. Just be mindful that a number of people have crashed on Mt Mee so it is a bit of a hot-spot for the boys in blue. There's an alternative route up Mt Mee from the north via Campbell's Pocket Rd. Its recently resurfaced and is very tight and twisty. A bit narrow though and there's a few blind corners on crests.

Yeah I got a little lost, and the weather wasnt too flash so i started to not follow the map and head home.

Might look at mt mee on the mt nebo/glorious way in, the later being slightly longer. Dont know the next time I need to go to brisbane anyway.

I noticed one direction of the obi obi road was bitumen, of course not until I got there.

Yer Campbells Pocket Rd is very narrow, but a very fun road to drive.

Mt. Nebo / Glorious very nice section of road, police do patrol these roads quite mainly saturday/ sunday.

I was an unfortunate passenger in a mates car who went over the cliff edge two weeks ago at Peachester rd. Add going way to fast (140kmph), stock suspenson, no abs and 11:30 at night = 40+ meters of black skid marks leading over the edge of the cliff, 1 tree with bark missing and 1 tree snapped in half that landed on the roof. We went over the edge so fast we didnt go down, we kept going straight off the edge, hit a tree over the side of the cliff about 2 meters from the bottom of it, then bounced of it into another tree snapping it and it landed on the roof, then we dropped down (the front of the car down, tail up) and where hanging that vertical we where suspended by our seat belts.. I put my feet on the dash so i could undo my seat belt, opened the door and climbed up the b pillar onto the tyre and then the boot like a ladder... 3 hours later two 4wd's barely got the car out. Just goes to show even the most compitent of drives come undone.. i got some cuts on my hands from the broken glass and whiplash.. luckily the driver wasn't hurt.. I'll tell you one thing, there's a shit load of bloody spiders down there hahaha, i shat myself. :P Bloody silvia's.. Good road though :)

fark! glad to hear you're alright mate...

i had a dream (premonition for this maybe?) a couple of weeks ago that i was driving and went around a corner too fast up on Mt Nebo, and ended up backing the car off a cliff, taking out a heap of trees on the way down, and landed right at the bottom... the car looked like it had been through a compactor, but somehow myself and my passenger got out okay... :|

definitely a sobering dream
