Hey guys got a 2 part question for you, I was just curious on which was the best brand of pod filter on the market at the moment.

And..

I was thinking that leaving the pod filter in the engine bay is A. Illegal, And B it is just sucking in hot engine air... I have heard bad storys about pod filters mounted under the car or in the front bar i.e losing throttle response etc. So i got thinking.. If i make a fully enclosed box for the pod filter made out of polished aluminium or something of the sort.. And cut a hole in the popped in circle where the intercooler piping would be if it was a turbo, And run some piping down into the front bar. What are your opinions on this and would this be a good move performance wise? Would the air flow be adequate enough for the pod filter to function properly?

i've had a pod filter with a metal foam heat shield, with aluminum backing, modified the heat shield to use the original snorkel...

i made exactly the same amount of power as with the panel filter 108.4rwkw (panel) and 108.0rwkw (pod). afr's fiddled around a bit, didnt drive any signifcantly different. if anything the car holds revs a bit better during shifts with the panel.

the only thing you really get from a pod filter is the induction noise, its like a farken vacuum when you open the bonnet - pissed me off. the panel filter is good on gtr's and can handle anywhere in excess of 200rwkw. its been proven by many of the turbo guys.

put it in perspective the mines r34 gtr runs a panel filter (which is a very similar (if not the same) size as the na panel filters.

pod filter is pretty much for noise only. not only that your engine bay looks tacky unless you have a proper cai and heatshield made up...

however that is my opinion and the best way for you to find out is to try it out yourself.

that said, here's some answers to your questions.

- the pod is ok to have in queensland, but must be secured by brackets.

- yes it is sucking in hot engine temps, so a cai and heatshield is a must.

- yes you can make one where the original intercooler piping goes (just be careful of scooping up water).

- the best pod filter on the market is an apexi power intake pod filter. you would have found the answer if you had searched the forums, which brings up this link: http://mkiv.com/techarticles/filters_test/2/ (have a read of this)

i've currently gone back to my panel filter after doing my spark plugs a few days ago, and getting rid of that stupid induction sounds has to be one of the best things. in regards to pod filters and intakes, the only time i'd probably run a pod filter ever again would be on the track with my headlight out.

Ok thanks heaps :) So in your personal opinion would you recommend a decent branded panel filter in the original box over a pod filter?

personally yes. I'm currently out for an apexi, pipercross or K&N one at the moment. local repco, autobahn will have them.

go to the 'general maintence' section and search panel or pod or filter and have a quick read through the results to confirm what i just said.

^ HAHAHA, when i did CAI on my vl, i couldnt notice a thing in the way the car drived.. i guess it just let the engine breath cooler air, but fark, didnt get any significant gains besides a cool sucking sound at high revs, besides that it was a complete waste of time for me... dunno how you guys feel about CAI and its benifits, maybe preserve engine life..?

if done corectly it may work but the problem is that the heat soak u get when just siting there just makes your inlet pipe hot so it just make s the cai useless.

bu t u mite find a midrange increase on a dyno but prob wont be enuff to feal it.

on the gen3 cars u do get a noticable gain bu puting on cai's, having fited then dynoes a couple ive noticed about 5-10 rwkw gains but yea not much considering the cost.

also out ouf interst on 1 of the customer cars we tryed a k@N pod kit, and the car lost power/torque down low but gained 5 kw up high over the over the ss inductions 1. but it pulled great up high in the revs.

it fealt shit to drive and just wasnt as grunty down low.

this was on a rebuilt motor with extractors, upgraded maf, maf pipe,great exhaust,biger tb,cleaned up heads,valvesprings,ect.

nothing major. but a great test car.

make sure u make a cai if ur doin this. i didnt put a cai and my car was sucking up the juice like no tommorow i got like 300km to the tank compared to 450km. I noticed difference in the high rev range and revs alot easier but on hot days was poo

    • Reasonably hard, although I haven't run it with the new Endless setup yet. The old brakes were F50's on 335mm rotors and the car did a 1:40.6 at Phillip Island which is a reasonable time, I'm seeing high 600s on the temperature paint. A guy I know ran the Endless fluid at WTAC without issues and he was doing 1:33's I think (Evo) with a 355/332 setup. I don't get out to the track as much as I'd like but we put the car on the hoist and spanner check every bolt and re-paint mark everything, bleed the brakes, change the fuel, check the coolant system and re-bleed blah blah blah before every event. Motorsport is expensive, RB's are expensive so a couple of hours before an event is time well spent. It's also a net time saving because if you can keep your RB from self destructing it saves you time in the long term!

    • I am using Motec M150.  I am not working on the car myself actually.  My workshop is giving all these info, they are quite reputable in the industry and are very familiar with Motec and RBs and have done a few big setups with VCam and single turbo on RBs.  In fact, they built and tuned my engine from day one.  But they are stumped with my engine at the moment and cannot work out how come the compression is so low with the VCam. They told me that they have now swapped in some Kelford cams (without the VCam) and can achieve around 130psi compression and the low end torque is better, but now the engine is doughy as.  It boosts and peaks at more than 1000rpm slower, with twin HKS GTIII RS, it doesn't get full boost until over 5000rpm. I have always thought the VCam was a bit disappointing at the low rpm. To a point I had to ride the clutch a fair bit to get up a small hill from stand still.  That was when I had a clutch.  Now changing to a 8HP, I don't have that luxury and this problem has become a major issue. I am beginning to think the VCam never work since the day it was installed.  Maybe it was just sitting at the most advanced point, that is why it went good at top end but very ordinary at the bottom.  Therefore, with the help of the Holinger 6 speed and paddle shift, as long as it was moving, it drove pretty good.
