hi guys just wondering i live in nsw and the car is registered in my name i will be moving to adelaide now will i have to go through regency or can i just wait for my nsw reg to run out then just change over to S.A plates thankyou

Can wait for it to run out, can change it as soon as you get there, don't 'have' to change it at all if you go about it the right way, it's all up to you really and how well you want to follow the rules generally your 'supposed' to swap the rego over within 3 months.

They will just do a VIN check to change over rego - unless your car is blatantly illegal from the outside, they will not defect you .... but either way my knowledge is you don't have to do a full Regency inspection (which is an absolute nightmare).

Did this myself, all you need to do is go into Motor Reg and they will transfer the car to SA for you. No need for Regency, no need for inspections and 100% headache free

Are you sure Luke? I had to have the VIN and engine number inspected before they gave me new plates/rego - otherwise you could remanufacture write-offs from interstate.

Yep can verify that too you dont even need to take the car with you no vin etc etc, as long as the car still has current rego and is in the name you wish to change it too. my car wasnt even goin then (still isnt lol not long now but).

This only applies if you're buying a car from interstate .. not transferring nsw/sa registration (i wouldn't have a clue about that).

When i brought mine over from victoria, i need a Vehicle Identification Check (about $25 dollars) from Regency. They inspected the car, and although it's not a full inspection, i was not allowed to have a turbo-timer or boost controller installed (see my old thread from julyish).

Then you take this slip to RTA, and you pay your stamp duty and then you pay registration and collect your new plates.

100% sure Andrew. The car was already in my name in NSW, came here, went into Motor Reg, said car was in my name, already registered, they just presented me with a form, filled it in, payed a couple of bucks and bam, all done

Yeh it will be like that when it's in your name in another state......... But if it's in someone eles's and not you then you need to get the check done!

Yep can back that 100% as i said before i rang up sa transport and they said if its in your name and has current rego just bring in the old rego slip and they change it over no checks nothin, and true to there word took in the old rego took bout 20mins and i was walkin out with my new rego and plates (they didnt even take my old plates which i was very very happy bout).

Didn't take my NSW plates either, but when I rang up the RTA in NSW to get my refund (still had 3 months rego) they said that Motor Reg down here shouldn't have even given me the SA plates before taking the old ones

Yeah this is what I also had to do when I bought my car from Sydney, though I didn't have to go through regency as I lived further south. They have a special check station next to the Sturt cop shop. I had a turbo timer on it , that wasn't really hidden very well but wasn't noticed & some very illegal tinting (since been changed) which was simply noted that it didn't comply, never heard any more of it.

They basically just check the plates & the engine number to see if everything matches, not much more than that.

ah well things have really changed then. When I brought my MX5 back with me when I moved back here from Darwin I had to take it to Regency for a VIN check, and while I was there they made me pull off my illeally dark tint there and then. He handed me a razor blade in a holder thingy and said I couldn't leave until the tint was off.

I had the same thing when i bought my RS260 from queensland in feb this year, the car was already in my name but i still had to take it to regency for an identification inspection, they checked all the numbers then had a basic look over the car. I got told my tint was too dark aswell and got handed a blade to remove it, i had to remove the tint from the whole car, but lucky for me the only windows tinted were the drivers and front passengers windows, the rest is black glass!

But the point is, the car was already in my name and i had to do it within 14 days of bringing it over. AND queensland reg sent me a letter asking me to return the plates.....which i never got around to come to think of it!

I brought a car form NSW when still living in Adelaide. Its a simple procedure and it was a different shed then were the defects get done at regenecy and all they do is check that the Vin number is correct and they didnt even look over my car. They just gave me the new paperwork and I was on my way. very simple I also wait till my nsw rego had run out as a pain to try and get whats left of rego back need to write a letter and all sorts....

If you own the vehicle interstate and it has current registration you don't need an inspection. All you need to do is fill out a form and get some new plates like Luke said

I'm certified to register vehicles, and i used to look after interstate used registrations

as for calling you get a call centre that doesn't know shit. We always get customers that have called them brought the "correct"information in and it will get rejected by the registra.
