hi guys,

over in campbelltown we have a line in trouble..

car starts and idles, will rev out of gear, but if you drive it the engine will cut out with no stutter or shudder just off. It will turn back on and drive another 50m before shutting off again.. what the heck is wrong with his car?

any ideas appreciated. We have checked most things already but cant find anything wrong

Just to clarify it will sort of stutter and shudder especially if revving or attempting to drive. Depends if u have it at low or high revs, which makes no difference except seems to have less chance of cutting out as frequently... but still stutters hardcore. If the car has been left alone for a while this can take a little while to happen. But It WILL cut out as a result of this, sooner if you "try" and drive it.

if you leave the car for a while, ie 30mins + it will start and rev ok but still sutter and choke a little bit... the longer you keep reving it the worse it will get until it gets so bad even if you start it it will die straight away. But the longer you leave the car it seems the longer it will take to get to such a problematic state. make no mistake though, the car is essentially useless.

Thoughts??

If the car has been off for a while u can usually start it and rev it hard for a bit and usually only notice slight stutters in the engine/revs but it will progressively get worse and more frequent until it reaches the point where it will die as soon as u start it no matter how you try and rev it.

Search for how to throw the R33's ecu in to diag mode. It will then output any faulty sensors. Hopefully. :D

The fuel and afm check you may not be able to do by the sounds of it... Might be worth dropping it off to some one who knows these cars as no doubt they will find the issue quick smart.

Mate i cant drive the car anywhere really and ripping the ECU out is a bit of a last resort hehe

I'll run some diag software on it via laptop tomorrow afternoon and try and replace fuel pump and see how we do.

Anyone know how to drain fuel tank? That might be worth doing too.

What good is putting it in diag mode? doesnt it needed to be hooked up to a nissan computer or something??

I dont even care about cost anymore i want it working.

Nope, you throw it in diag mode and it runs its tests and throws out a code (by flashing a light (dash light or light on the ecu). You count the flashes and then compare the number to that in a list. It then may show something like code blah... coolant temp sensor or code blah afm etc etc..

You can even throw it in an o2 test mode where it flashes the light as the o2 sensor goes high/low. An easy way to determine if your o2 sensor is shagged, lazy, or not.

i had a problem with my RB20. all stock except an exhaust and pod. it would start and run fine when it was cold, but once it warmed up it would just cut out, altogether, then not start again for a while until it cooled down. I found the problem to be my alternator/power supply. Might be worth checking.

does the engine kick over every time you start it? either hot or cold?

Yes. But if ive had the car on for a while reving long enough or attempted driving it it will reach a point where it will cut out as soon as its kicked over. almost as if its using fuel thats flowed through due to gravity but ran out. ignore me lol

It doesnt normally just straight cut out due to temp, it struggles and hiccups like a dirt bike with its fuel ratio/mixture wrong except will also cut out like its not getting fuel and then just not go at all. then repeat process after a while.

    • If you are genuinely considering trying to get this engineered, I would strongly advise finding the engineer that is happy to sign that off first before you put the hole in your car.  I've seen cars get defected for this and not be able to be put back on the road as no engineer they spoke to was happy to sign if off.
    • Apologies, while id like to put the MAF as close to the TB and relocate the recirc, this may be too much work. Will most likely end up just putting it on the original AFM spot ( onto/next to the airbox ).  Was going through nistune, found a pretty nifty doc on this. Nistune MAF Notes. Also, i was looking through the bay, and there seems to be a tube/line connected from the A/C to the intercooler piping ( Between the smic and the recirc), what does this do as the crossover fmic piping doesnt have any connection? plumbing? not sure what you call it but the nipple thing ahah.  Also, been reading up more about crossover fmic in regards to the legality of having the hole drilled for the piping, this would most likely need to be engineered right?
    • My advice is if you need a big build done do it in Japan. The yen rate is so favorable and there are shops that can be genuinely trusted and not micromanaged/carefully monitored every step of the way. Garage Yoshida is obviously my preferred option but they're so busy these days and all interaction with new customers has to be mediated through BBL/Toprank now.
    • I haven't....but a poorly made one would terrify me. Surely a good second hand one is the go, as they don't work hard and no-one wants to keep one after they are finished with it A big consideration would be the weight of the shell you are putting on it....is it a fully dressed chassis or just the body
