Depends on what you want to do actually. I'll recommend a silvia (S15) for drifting, as a skyline is not really meant for that purpose. Well, it can, but there're so many cars which are better, like the S15, S14, maybe S13 and the FD3S (if you're rich enough).

Performance wise... it depends on how much money you're willing to throw at it. My stock r33 gts-t does 132.3kw on the dyno.

im planning to get a car, so i wanna ask...is the skyline r33 series 2 a good car...

I'm not sure that a Skyline web forum is the best place to get an unbiased opinion on whether Skyline ownership is a good idea. That's like going into an NRA meeting and asking if gun ownership is a good idea. Or going to a KKK meeting and asking if bashing minority groups is a good idea...

My suggestion is to try out a few different cars and see what suits you best. You might find you'd like something lighter, like a 180sx or R32, or you might find you'd like something torquier, like a Supra TT or 300ZX. Not that the R33 is exactly lacking in the torque department. Or you might something more comfortable, like a Soarer.

Or you might decide all imports are crap and buy a Commodore.

Their underrated once modified...

Buy one, modify it and you'll enjoy...

Ive drag'ed, circuit raced & done hill climbs in mine and cant get enough... Not a drift car by any means but with the right mods the power can out do the weight... By the way i see everyone says their too heavy every time these topics come up... There is 70kg's difference inbetween an r32 gts-t and an r33 gts-t...

The extra 500ml of capicity makes up more than 70kg's in performance...

The 180sx are great cars lite weight and fast and good for drifiting if ya wanna do it. The 180sx with sr20det and s15 turbo stock boost and fmic pulling times like low 13s and mid to high 12s. But skylines ppl think look nicer your opinion. 180sx or skyline r33 gtst both great cars mate wont lose on either purchase.

I was very close to getting a 180sx, ended up getting a Series 1 R33 gtst.

The reasoning was that because skylines are more common, i figured if I pranged it, spare parts and what not would be easier to source for the 'line.

Having said that I don't know if its true or not.

But anyway, just take a few different cars for a test drive. R33's aren't slow by any means, in terms of sports cars they are on the heavier side but they aren't THAT heavy. Besides, as stated, the 2.5L turbo 6 more than makes up for the weight :(

Hmm - asking that on a skyline forum can be a bit biased - but look, there are heaps of nice jap cars out there, so test drive your potentials:

drifting - silvias, 180s, rx7 etc

circuit - skylines, supras, silvias, 180s, rx7 etc

(these are just my options if i was to get one though)

Go for one that you feel is right for you in terms of power, handling, looks. Keep in mind that if you want to do mods, then which is the easiest to mod up to get the most performance gain, which is the cheapest to mod up to get that performance gain. Check out Munna1's website on tuning, thats very helpful and gives a rough indication of the power increases through each mod - and also gives u a bit of info on the skyline

Look at insurance as well - cos once u get those mods on, it might go higher.

The only bad thing about the skyline (or any hi performance cars) is that it doesnt like being on the roads - it much rather be on a track. 184kws stock is low compared to the HSVs and stuff, but even then the rush of the turbo is just so unreal, that before you know it your over the speed limit - hence why its more at home on the track.

You will be looking at around $16,000+ for an s2 r33 - that bone stock (unless someone is desperate to get rid of their car) - but for a modified one, id say around 22grand?

I was initially looking at supras - and test drove a couple of nice ones, but the turbo in the 'line made a lot of difference. In the end it came down to looks vs power - so I got the 'line cos it looked great (with just a very very mild body kit and after market rims) and it had better performance than the Supra SZ. If I was to go for the supra, I would have gone to the twin turbo, that was another 10 grand or so (which meant, i may as well consider the gtr). But in the end, I made the right choice with the r33, and havent really looked back since.

I bought a stock 96 r33 turbo for $15,000 which was a bargin....it had 145rwkw stock and put on split dump pipe full 3" exhaust with 5" hi flo cat and not has 170rwkw. very quick car.....i was looking for a R34 but getting on for $25,000 completely stock was tuff, the $10,000 i saved was well worth it...amazing car

I came from an EBII XR6 Falcon, and the difference is amazing. I was going to get a BA XR6 Turbo, but I don't think I will now as the Skyline just does everything so well.

As for drifting - I can't comment because I haven't tried, but I can't recommend the r33 highly enough in my experience.

Good value, nice to drive, pretty fast and comfortable on a long drive.

in saying that, the long drive that is, I am driving up to QLD for a holiday soon and was wondering if driving for hours on end at 3 grand will hurt my car? Will getting a FMIC help? will the stock intercooler be ok? Let me know...

I have driven for 2 hours straight or so.. No dramas with my car and it was stock.. apart from catback exhaust.. Then made a few stop afterwards to drop ppl home from our trip back up coast.. so i spent about 3 hours maybe drive that whole day.. Nothing happened...

Obviously if your car is in crap condition i wouldnt drive it for long periods of time..

S2s - looks much nicer than the series 1 to be honest..

But nah to answer to your orginal question, YES they are good cars!!

I'm no expert, but providing that the car in good condition it should be no different to any other car. Engines are under a lot more stress in stop start driving conditions than cruising, so just keep half an eye on the temperature guage and you should be fine.

Providing that you aren't running some crazy boost the stock intercooler will be fine for cruising IMO.
