Low Boost Pressure

Recommended Posts

Guest Lojikl

Okay this has been bothering me for a while.

My boost pressure seems fairly crappy. Even when I hammer the accellerator the boost NEVER goes above about 3.5 on the standard boost guage, and I can feel that theres not much jump in acceleration.

I have a Pod filter and 3 inch cat back exhaust. My old 180SX used to hit 15 no worries,

Anyone have an ideas what might be going on here.

Cheers.

If you want to increase the boost there are 2 way, bleed valve or an electronic boost controller. Some EBC's have a boost gauge built in (blitz dual sbc) which will tell you how much boost before manifold. The bleed valve is much cheaper but will spike so you'll need to get yourself a seperate boost gauge to read what boost you are running. Eitherway is effective, just dont run more than 13psi through the stock turbo. Plus if you still have the stock intercooler you wont be able to run that boost all the time without having some detonation when the temperature is warm. Comes down to how much you want to spend and how reliable you want it to be.

Nothing like setting my EBC to 12psi on a cold night like tonight and giving it a good fang on the way home from some crappy training session at telstra ;) Even with the stock cooler on a cool night like tonight I found I could run 12psi without much problems but with the front mount now it does seem to pull a small amount harder.

my r31 only reads around 3psi on the stock guage as well, fitting a better boost guage soon to suss it out.

rev210, in saying thats normal is the factory guage out or is the car just running bugger all boost?? cheers mate

with the stock intercooler and 12psi on a 30+ degree day the car would detonate when pushed hard because the intake temps were so high, detonation sounds like a rattling noise coming from the engine and will cause severe damage to the engine if you keep pushing it, if you hear it stop pushing the car and back right off. Now I can pretty much run 12psi on a hot day and push it hard without too many drama's but I dont like to.

    • All I can say Duncan is good luck and I hope that Neil did not run any E85 in Cheryl. I have recently experienced the full spectrum of fuel tank issues in my R33's that had been caused by E85 and contaminated fuel. When you take the cover off the top of the tank and have a look inside you will get an understanding of how easy it will be. Best case situation is clean fuel with minimal contamination. My GTR was like this and it was a very simple operation to just grab the fuel pump carrier bracket and slide it up and out of the tank. My three GTS_T's had different levels of fuel contamination that was probably caused by E85 in the fuel.  In the worst case all of the metal components in the tank had rusted to the point where there were pieces of rusted metal swirling around in the tank. This required the removal of the exhaust, the tailshaft, the complete rear cradle and the fuel tank. The components in the tank were that rusted that it took days to get the fuel pump carrier and the mounting brackets out of the tank. When the tank was finally cleaned, everything inside the tank had to be replaced. With the tank all back together I could then reinstall it in the car along with everything else that had to come out. Good luck and I hope that you find a clean tank.
    • It is a two door. It is black and also still has the OEM wheels and stereo. Exact model would be KR_R32RGFEL_SS According to GTR-Registry.com is a 2 Door Coupe; RB20DE; 2WD no HICAS; MT.F5; (11L) Projector Headlamps and Fog Lights; (12_) Electronic Active Full Auto Air Con (Climate Control); (13-14SS) V Selection -- Which seems to be accurate description of my variant. Will try to upload a few pictures soon. The OEM wheels look like the below image. Image is taken from the goo-net-exchange website.
