Duncan
Well I've had a mixed record. Every single race except 1 I have done I have had some panel damage, ranging from minor scrape to a full roll. The crash free race was my first one in the skyline.....and I went back to my old habits the next race. Track days and supersprints on the other hand, I have never even come close to a crash, have come off a couple of times but never gone near a car or solid object. Re insurance, shannons cover you while on the track if you are doing driver training....unless you are actually competing at an event the organisers should be willing to confirm it was driver training. I also have my race gtr insured through them on a limited klm policy (comprehensive) about 800 a year for agreed value $35k insurance Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/139834-anybody-here-had-a-crash/page/2/#findComment-2618653 Share on other sites
Roy
I have been doing track days since 2000 in my R32. Though i havent done much the last 12 months. I have had a few offs, none really that scary. I have had a fire which sucked, and was traced back to a perished hose near my dump pipe. And i had a small accident at Corporate Hill at Eastern Creek. Basically was getting far too wet with too much standing water and i had just recovered from a big, scary moment on turn 8...so backed off and was rolling towards turn 9 when the car aquaplaned off down into the tyres. Still drove the car for the next 8 months but the rear quarter damage prompted a full respray I made the silliest mistake you can make on the track, and thats turning the brain off before you turn the car off Just because i backed off i stopped concentrating and failed to appreciate that i was still going pretty quick on worn semi slicks in the wet. Roy is latin for dick Actually, I also kissed the tyres at Calder at a drift day...drift is silly. I didnt care at this stage as the car was going in for a full respray. And it does seem that when the clocks are ticking the more experience guys push the hardest...and some are lucky, some, well when you fark with the bull, you sometimes get the horns Oh, and here is the pic of the damage from the Eastern Creek accident... You can see the front guard was replaced (silver R32 GTSt guard cost me $60) and the rear quarter needed to be repaired:( Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/139834-anybody-here-had-a-crash/page/2/#findComment-2618728 Share on other sites
Snowman
Hehe - they were both examples of precision driving Bris and you know it. Not a scratch on the car. There was at least 5cm between me and the wall I reckon. At least. Roy
Hehe - they were both examples of precision driving Bris and you know it. Not a scratch on the car. Its not scratches that are a concern. Its the prospect of big friggin dents that scare me Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/139834-anybody-here-had-a-crash/page/2/#findComment-2620169 Share on other sites
phunky_monkey
Dents don't exist with my car... it's a scratch or a hole punched through fibreglass Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/139834-anybody-here-had-a-crash/page/2/#findComment-2620195 Share on other sites
hrd-hr30
In 6 or 7 years of SuperSpints and Hillclimbs I've had a few offs, but never any accidents. Rallying on the other hand offers much greater scope to express your true crashing style... http://members.westnet.com.au/debandtim/images/stanza2.jpg on a 3rd gear RH corner - probably around 80kph actual road speed. 2004 QLD Rally Championship round. I just ran too wide on the exit of a nice smooth, open corner and went up the cutting on the outside - sideways, of course... and it came back down on the road upside down and sorta nose first. Not quite sure what happened at the top of the cutting to flip the car and throw us back towards the road... Roy
...when i service for a few rally guys, it scares me how mnay cars come back with punched out headlights, dented guards etc. Occassionally you get a car thats ended up the wrong side up...but its safe to say you dont expect near as much panel damage on the black stuff as you do the dirt Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/139834-anybody-here-had-a-crash/page/2/#findComment-2620595 Share on other sites
MBS206
I beleive someone here totalled a GTR not too long ago and was parting it out to try and get some money back. Was a complete write off. Al
I only had one off in three track days, but that one off caused me to hit the wall . If you can't afford to be without the car for an extended period of time or can't afford to fix any potential repairs, then best keep it off the track. Also note, tyres, brakes, suspension also gets pretty expensive to replace/repair, just from track wear and tear. The accident had a expensive but good upside to it, it got me motivated to spend the $$$$'s and improve it Damage After Repair: Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/139834-anybody-here-had-a-crash/page/2/#findComment-2622461 Share on other sites
Duncan
This thread is giving a really bad impression. I reckon 99/100 cars come back from a track day fine. And I reckon the drivers of the other 1% would all admit they did something silly Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/139834-anybody-here-had-a-crash/page/2/#findComment-2622797 Share on other sites
Al
Track days are very risky, I agree with your 1% theory, but that equates to 2 cars for every 3 track days . I too agree with the "silly" part too, as I have since learnt a very valuable lesson; EASE the power on, when coming out a corner But these lessons are only learnt through experience. Most are lucky and have no damage for their mistakes, but some will pay the full price. Just letting people know the risks involved and making them think wether they are financially secure. In my opinion if the car is under finance or loan, I would highly recommend not to track the car, as these people could not afford to write it off. You only need to look at the professionals, to realise how risk this sport is. If you can afford the maintenance and repair cost, I highly recommend taking the sport up. It is a HUGE rush and great fun when everything goes right Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/139834-anybody-here-had-a-crash/page/2/#findComment-2622909 Share on other sites
hrd-hr30
track days are only as dangerous as you make them. there's no sheepstations on the line - you don't have to push 10/10ths. most of the time, less experienced people are smoother and faster at 8 or 9/10ths anyway. But there is always a chance something will go wrong. Most tracks have plenty of run-off areas, and on corners where there isn't just be sensible and ease back a bit. If you drive within your limits you'll be fine 99.9% of the time. At any rate, its alot safer than playing up on the roads! Roy
And I reckon the drivers of the other 1% would all admit they did something silly YEP...mine should never have happened Sit back and think i would have done over 50 track events and now the Dutton Rally. Hell the only cone i hit at Dutton was in the silly SPC carpark where my car struggled with enough lock at 15km/h to park the thing in the garage..silly bloody event. One of the MSCA days has a guy running that has a big sticker on the dash that reads 'Ensure brain stays connected to right foot" ... its 100% right Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/139834-anybody-here-had-a-crash/page/2/#findComment-2627018 Share on other sites
NickR33
Here you go - the kink at Sandown including RowdyR32 Also - you won't cause a crash to someone else at a sprint day. I've never seen it happen. People cause their own crashes. I almost did this exact same thing on the weekend and thought for a moment damn, I am going to have to post in the crash thread! I went wide at the sweeper just before the kink... out on the grass at about 160kmh was a new experience for me!... had too much speed as I entered the sweeper and knew if I tried to get hold my line the back would come round and I would end up like the 2 cars in that vid^^ .... yes more practice for me only issue was my better half was being a flaggy at the kink and saw the whole thing... she doesn't trust me anymore when I tell her I am 'taking it easy' hahahaha Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/139834-anybody-here-had-a-crash/page/2/#findComment-2627020 Share on other sites
BBGTR
In Vic I could name....Roy (R32 GTST) Adzmax (R34 GTT) Emre (R33 GTR) RowdyR32 (R32 GTR) RMPGTR (R33 GTR) Scotsman (R3 GTR) Black Viper (R33 GTST) Al (R33 GTST) clayoth (R34 GTR) And they are just the skylines I can think of. Others from here include BBGTR (STI) wokka wokka (WRX) pomme joe (EVO VIII) So it happens. I have video of Rowdy's off along with another WRX from that day PS - if your on this list and want to be removed let me know. Yes, it's amazing how digging a wheel into the sand at turn 1 at Sandown can flip a car over. Still, if you can't can't afford to bin it, you can't afford to race it!!!
