1 word - Insurance. If you want full comprehensive insurance, I hope you have a fat wallet that doesn't mind being totally emptied. Male (I assume with a name like Dave) + <25 + Import + Turbo =

I can't comment on much, but when I was in a 180 ('89 ca18det), it felt quite sporty with the turbo coming on pretty hard. But my skyline (r33) feels a lot smoother and refined. I'm sure the other guys can give reasons for this (such as engine sizes, etc)

Your best bet would be to take 1 of each for a spin and feel the differences for yourself. Maybe some Melbourne owners will give you a ride in theirs to get a feel of what the cars are like, and what various mods can do.

Just cars insurance gave me this quote by the way... (good bad or ugly?)

Policy Type COMPREHENSIVE

Vehicle Use PRIVATE

Quote Valid to 28/04/2003

Vehicle Purchase Price $15,990

Your Car

1995 NISSAN SKYLINE GTS HR33 COUPE (IMPORT) 6 CYL MAN

Insurance based on following Driver Details

DATE OF BIRTH 25/6/1985

SEX Male

YEARS OF INSURANCE 0

NCB%/RATING 0% NCB/RATING 6

thats with NO mods.....

they move even with no mods yah? (skylines)

thanks again

ShtyleZ, I don't think the combination of <18 years old, <$20k performance car with <$4k insurance is a possible combination.

Unless you can somehow swing the insurance via your dad's work or something, if he can get fleet insurance. I've heard of people doing that before, lumping their own policy in with their parents' company and paying even less than a >30 year old with 60% NCB can get on their own.

Dude, i think this quote is for a NON TURBO skyline !!

Add a t to the GTS, (GTS-turbo!) and see what they quote

:P

-yes, skylines are much more "liveable" inside than 180's.

-it depends what your used to, if your not used to qik cars then a unmodded skyline will move. If your used to a modded skyline, then an unmodded one is slow, and you'll get done by VL commodores with RB20 conversions :D

Hey. I was in a similiar situation to you when i first turned 18. I really wanted a 180sx, but realistically i couldnt even afford the car, let alone the insurance. Drove around in an EA falcon for a while, then a brand new corrolla and then i bought an XF falcon. Also got to get a fair bit of driving experience in V8 commy's. Anyway two years later i can now genuinely afford a decent car. Im now looking for a car and i can afford to spend 23-25K before insurance. Was it worth. Hell yes

180's are great cars, but kinda small and a little less practical than a skyline. I would love a 180sx but i need some comfort and room!

Lifes tough when you have to make choices like these!!

Buy a shit car, get some driving experience, save some more money and get a better car in a years time!

Mat

docile, thats good advice, especially about the driving experience. I hate to think how many P-plated turbo cars have been put into trees etc.

We all remember being 18, we wanted it all then and there!

Real tough decision ShtyleZ, especially if your a car buff, im sure we all feel for you!

Personally if it were me in your situation, id just get the car without insurance. No its not the smart way to do it, and if you have a heavy foot, it could set you back a LONG WAY if you damage someone elses car/property! I risked it when i was 18, and i crashed the first 2 of my cars (V8 toranas though, which back then they were the shit, imports were little known!), just lucky i hit a stop sign and not a car (had to pay for the sign though!)

good luck dude. Good things come to those who wait! (although ive never been able to do that :))

    • I clean my wheels every time I was the car, I also clean the barrels, the only product I use on the wheels is truck wash, followed by wash and wax, cleaning the barrels is easy with one of these microfibre thingies on a stick from Sabco, there also great for getting in between the front guards and body, and tight spots in the engine bay ย
    • An updated post here. Sounds to me like there's definitely a bit of sketchiness here.ย  Old mate with 10 rusting Torana's in the front yard might be more who they're focussed on. (For right or wrong).
    • Is this not just about people wrecking, and storing, multiple cars in their front yard? I now a tow truck driver that was contracted by the council to clean up housing commission front and rear yards in houses and unit car parks I'm all for working on, and doing maintenance on your car in your garage or driveway, but some people definitely take the pissย  There's one house locally to me that I walk past regularly where the front yard and driveway looks like a wreckers, multiple cars in various stages of being stripped, and the yard looks like all of fluids are basically dumped on the ground I may be wrong, but it seems that the initial reports, which I've seen nothing actually official about yet, may be getting taken out of context, like alot of the latest "the sky is falling" stuff found on the youtubes for clicks
    • have they? Link appreciated. I live in Casey. I can see both sides of the argument in this case. There's a lot of sketchy stuff going on. There needs to be a clear definition of what this is supposed to be IMO. I wager the intent was to be a broad sweeping brush against people who have 4 cars up on blocks on their front lawn, not someone who services their own car behind their own gate on a weekend bothering probably nobody. But it'd be hard to legislate the difference there.
    • Oh, the wheels were already off. I wouldn't normally take them off to clean them although it does make it easier with the ceramic, so I might take them off when reapplying. I don't drive much but now with the ceramic coat, when I do drive and they get dirty I can get most off with the pressure washer. I'll be switching to dirtier pads soon which was the motivation for the ceramic as I usually just clean them and sometimes use Autoglym wheel protector. Nah, f**k the barrels! Haha, I'll give them a quick scrub when they're off the car and a pressure wash, but even I draw the line with the barrels. Yes, dark coloured wheels allow you to get away with a lot! ย
