hey guys im looking at buying a non turbo r34 tiptronic coupe.. my budget is 19 000 and ive found a few that fall under this category... i just wanted to know, ive found to similar skylines that i like, 1 is red with a spoiler, the other is gun metal grey with no spoiler.. i rather the gun metal colour.. the thing is that the red one is a 2000 model and the grey one is 1998 model.. can anyone tell me the main differences between the year models? both are 19000.. thanks alot for any help

Minor things like interior trim and LED colour behind the instruments, black instead of silver steering wheel paddles etc etc. All the differences are much of a muchness really. Just that you may feel more comfortable knowing you've got a newer model. No performance difference at all.

not really, i have an automatic license, embarasing, but i have no manual cars in my family to learn on.. and i seriously do not want to do the Ps test again.. my firt option was to go 5 speed, leanr on it get my ps again in manual, but after talking to my mate at KRT who bulids nissan race gearboxes, he reccomended the tiptronic, as he can do shift kit for me or even a full manual valve body...i do majority city driving so im guessing tip tronic has the pros of the manual car, and leaves the con of having to clutch all the time..?

If deep deep deep down you would rather just have two pedals that's your choice. But if you want the whole experience and want to use the car to its full potential and have a whole lot more fun, get the manual, learn on it, then get your P's. I got my auto license first..Because those P-plate laws crushed me wanting to get a skyline. After a while auto got boring and I was back into lines regardless of it being non-turb. Looked around for a manual line, got it, learnt manual in 2 weeks and got my P's that final day. It's a pain in the ass to learn, but once you get it ( under a week ) you're set.

Sorry to be bit realistic;/pain but if you don't have Manual license then do not buy Auto SKYLINE.

Make sure you buy Manual skyline... What ever the cost!

aggree'd, i went from a manual skyline to an auto skyline and its horrible...

they obviusly have less power, but mine pulls just as hard if not harder than my old one (and its 100kg heavier, just a tidier engine), your getting the same acceleration, but its jst f**king boring, you lose the thrill, etc esp from the taller gearing...

i find myself manual shifting constantly, and cracking the shits when the stupid f**king auto shifts into o/d at like 60kmph up a hill, so then i stomp it, shifts back to first & 5500rpm etc.

it makes you want to abuse your car, i find it frustrating.

needless to say, my auto tranny is shagged, she's getting a manual conversion, but if im going to go to the effort, she's going be be done properly (HD Clutch, Lightened f/w, single piece tailshaft, etc)

You will regret it, dont start out on auto's, start out on manuals and then if you dont like them switch back. Its not hard to do your manual test (dont know about up there though) its just like a 15 min test where you drive around casually, find a hill, do a hill start and find a car to do a reverse park on, too easy.

If you've got heaps of driving experience and are confident on the road, once you learn a manual you should ace it.

Depends on your needs. Obviously manual gives better performance when thrashing the car, but some people seriously DO need an auto if they drive to and from work in gridlock everyday.

Drive both then decide, I personally reckon the R34 tiptronic is a pretty decent system, shifts faster than most other tiptronics out there....but any auto skylines without tiptronic ie <R34s, I wouldn't bother with.

nah i wouldnt even consider a standard auto.. deff has to be tip tronic.. and will prob get a stage 2 shift kit from my mate at KRT race transmitions.. can anyone whos driven the tip tronic r34 tell me, do they have rev limiters? like do they get to a certain point where the computer automaticly changes for you ?

Well the whole point of triptronic is so you're in control when you put it in that flippy mode.. I don't see why it would change for you, that would kind of defeat the purpose.

Just get the manual.. Buy it.. learn.. P's in under a week. I'll teach you haha

i just went to an import dealership, looked at a few non turbo lines.. they have a 5 speed coupe there, they guy said it has a racing chip in it.. he said its 10% of the turbo?? no actual figures as it hasnt been dyno'd, does this sound reasonable? 10% of turbo with a racing chip? he said they can only be inported from japan

I think he is playing with your balls there......ya cant pull a figure out of your ass like that....

ye i know its obviously not spot on, but he was full ravin on about this non turbo, and they have heaps of turbo versions too.. he was saying obviously not a turbo, but with the racing chip it is barley different? anyone actually put a racing chip in an n/a that can tell me what its like?

hey guys, i went to another dealership today to test drive the n/a r34.. ive never driven a non turbo skyline before, and wasnt expecting anything great.. but was i wrong, the r34 gt coupe went awsome, i was really suprised at how well it responded, how well it handled, and really how its not far of a turbo with minimal mods.. really ive read people saying how slow n/a skylines are??? compared to what ? the gtr? i really highly rated it, performance and comfort.. the tip tronic was also very very smooth,

the chip thing sounds rubbish, regardless there's not much use for australian fuel - unless you can find someone to tune it.

and in regards to your test drive, yes its quite true - the na skylines aren't crap. it's mainly all the turbo boys playing them down - stock for stock, there's about ~30-40rwkw difference.

its just when they start adding more and more boost is where their power comes in. and thats where the difference between the two types is, cost to power ratio.

boost is practically free in regards to gaining power, however then you have to take into account fuel economy, longevity and maintenance (and hence supporting mods like an intercooler, oil cooler, regular oil changes, etc). with a turbo motor you can simply hide the "faults" so to speak by adding more boost, where as the methods for extracting power from an na comes down to every last kilowatt - and you are essentially making a more breathable, rev happy, and most importantly REFINED motor. (similar theory also applies to turbos, better dump pipe, better manifold, etc)

that is my opinion in a nut shell, obviously if you want to get into technicals you can.

Did you test both the turbo and na?

With the question about rev limiter the R34 Auto's when in triptronic mode it will shift if it thinks it needs to, but only at the last minute....

EG: I get to about 80km before it forces into 2nd gear but i can always shove it back into 1st, but the gearbox is trying to tell me it wants a higher gear.

Same when down shifting if it wants a lower gear it will do it automatically.

There is very little lag in changing of the gears if any, I mainly use the gear knob in tiptronic mode but the steering wheel controls are just as good (once you turn them on)

I do alot of h'wy driving and peek hour driving in Sydney and Central Coast so the auto was way more pratical for myself but on the h'way a manual would be so much better as the R34 auto's only have 4 speed gearbox and I dont think they have overdrive unless it is automatic as there is no button to turn it on and off.

Just incase different years are different I have a 98 R34 GT-T Sedan.
