Hi just purchased my gtr not long ago, and after talking to a couple people I have been told that with the r32's it is good to fill the engine with an extra litre of oil?

Just wondering if any of you guys had heard of doing this, and what are the reasons behind it?

Cheers,

Dave

i have heard of people doing this on track days to decrease the chance of oil starvation from cornering, braking etc

apparently works a charm but is a bit messy via lots of blow-by i.e oil catch can will prob have to be emptied afterwards

cant see it being very neccessary for everyday driving

never had an oil problem with my gtr but oil systems are known as a weak point due to age

Hope that helps

The internal pressure of the motor.

I personally wouldnt be putting in a whole litre of oil in extra, a whole litre of oil is alot, it may not look like alot but its a f**kload extra. Its never good to overfill, unless of course what was mentioned before about track days etc.

Yer internal pressure of the motor....

I was thinking it might put strain on the seals that's all. :P I mean i definately understand the reason behind the added 1ltr during a track day to stop oil starvation, but then im guessing the thrash around the track would add to heat=expansion=more pressure=strain on seals/gasket=leaky seals.

Wouldnt a better way of stopping the problem be to install a High Energy sump for that extra capacity rather than a kind of "band-aid fix"???

I dunno...im just guessing here.

oh yes the baffle is far better option but an extra litre of oil is a lot cheaper im guessing thats why people do it

i will be putting a Tomei Baffle in my Gtr but its not as cheap as you might hope 200 odd for baffle then fitting requires removing sump and as you may remember the front diff is part of the sump in Gtr's

lots o fun

oh well like gtrchick said if your gonna do something may aswell do it properly

That's pretty obvious.

The oil pressure is a measure of the resistance of the oil to flow through the galleries of the engine. It is independent of oil volume - otherwise, the oil pressure would vary as the oil level varies between the lo and hi marks on the dipstick.

Oil pressure is related to the viscosity of the oil, which is basically relative to temperature - cold oil runs higher pressure than hot oil.

I heard it off a guy that had the engine recently rebuilt by ben at racepace, he said ben said that in a straight six engine it's good to overfill because under strong acceleration the oil moves towards the back of the engine and can starve the cylinders towards the front?

what do you guys think?

ahhk k ...well i was almost kinda there....sortof :(

hehehe

I knew that temp had an effect on pressure of the oil, i just forgot to carry the 1 when over calculating. :)

out of curiosity.. how much oil do you gyus put in the GTR?. i usually jus put the whol 5L bottle of elf excellium 10w50 in. but now ive got a oil filter relocator and the lines to the filter is about 50cm or so lol.

should i be putting in at least 5.5L?

I run the extra litre in my 32 as when i used to accelerate hard in first and second my oil press would momentarily drop off ! With the extra litre ive never a problem since and its been like that for couple of years now. :)

do you have an oil catch can? Does it get filled with oil from overflowing? or do you have any trouble with the extra oil in the system?

Yes i do use a catch can and it has never filled up. The most i ever get out of it is about 100mls after doing five or six runs down the quarter ! It was much the same after doing about ten laps of QLD raceway. I do have a oil filter relocator and oil cooler so that might take up a bit extra oil. Ive had no probs with with it at all and i know a few others that do it as well with no probs. Like i said, mines been running like this for a couple of years now and done over 30,000 kms so i think if anything was going to go wrong it would have by now.
