I've just bought an R33 GTS-T like 3 weeks ago, and after changing the castor bushes, spark plugs and tappet cover gaskets, a knocking sound can heard from my engine about less than 48 hours later... it's quite loud, and it's audible sometimes when it's idling, or when i rev to like 3000 or 4000rpm.

The mechanics at Mercury Motorsport told me that I might be looking at an engine swap or a rebuild... and they'll get back to me on monday...

The thing is, a compression test 3 weeks ago showed no problems!

Anyone has any experience in stuff like these? Could the sound be due to the servicing, something loose, or do I really need to blow tons of money on an engine swap or rebuild? How much would that cost anyway?

I haven't even done anything to it yet!

*sighhh*

Oh. Quick question. If I do really need a new engine (which i hope i don't!), will it be legal if i get an R34 engine and put it in?

im having the same problem,. this happend only when i over reved it to 10K RPM as i didnt know casue i have a rev limiter remover...

from now on im not removing .... f**king dangerous when u are rev happy u dont look at the guages ...

I think u need a new BOTTOM END for sure... usually its bottom of the engine that makes the knocking sound ..

crouch down and listen ,when u turn the engine off you should hear rattling noise like metal clucking settling sound.

If u hear that u need a new bottom end , just buy a new bottom end with everything and bolt it to the engine

much cheaper prob cost u a good 2 Gs labor included.

Im going to do that soon myself , as of now oil pressure boost and everything is normal.

I havent checked the compression yet but will do soon.

Let me know if u hear that noise i mentioned.

it's at the workshop already.. it's not really a metalic sound. It's like something rubber/non-metallic hitting against something else everytime the engine goes "putt"?

When the engine goes off, it's off, and it's not a rattling sound...

At first, i thought it's the timing belt but apparently it's not; but they don't have the time to check it today, so it's gonna wait 'til monday.

It increases in frequency with the RPM. Most of the time, it's not audible if it's just idling.

  • 1 year later...

Sounds like big end bearnings it's more like a dull knock and that means a rebuild but it all depans on how much money you wanna spend it would be cheaper to buy a second hand motor and slap it in from a wrecker make sure it has warrenty including labour costs to fit it.
